General Pick Your Team - Rnd 23 vs Knights

Doesn't sound too good for Seb maybe Bukuya should just replace him because the mood Newcastle's in we just can't afford to carry passengers

He was 18th man I think. Was on the field doing extras after the game. Doing suicides with Ben Henry and Sebastine Ikahihifo. Seb was struggling big time. Looked like he was going to puke and didnt complete all the runs...

This is why I want Seb to start on the bench... His overall effectiveness definitely seems to have slipped in the last few weeks, and that's not unexpected - this is his first real stint of regular FG, it was likely to catch up with him at some point. Get Mutts on the edge and Simon in the middle where they belong and give Seb reduced minutes off the bench for some real impact in the middle, like when he began his stint in FG and was close to our best player.

Is seb injured? He has been taking his time getting to his feet after hit ups I've noticed. Can't say I'd expect Bukuya to be much fitter given the amount of time he's missed...

No I'm not privy to that info so I don't know if he's truly injured but from the footage on Sunday he looked in huge discomfort and Mt Welly just mentioned that he almost puked doing extras so that's a fair indication of a player nowhere near his best and it's showing in his game.

To me this doesn't sound or look like a player at a hundy percent so I wouldn't risk Seb against Newcastle and I'm not sure of Bukuya's current fitness status but he is an experienced player that could make an impact for us at this time of year so I'd have no hesitation bringing him in

Should've read this thread before posting in the other.
I thought it looked like seb was carrying an injury but that seems unlikely if they had him doing extras after the game.
Although then again, it seems weird that they'd have benry doing extras too- thought he was nursing injuries as well?

My team for this week.

1. Tomkins
2. Fusitua
3. Laumape
4. Henry
5. Vatuvei
6. Townsend
7. Johnson
8. Rapira
9. Friend
10. Lillyman
11. Matulino
12. Lousi
13. Mannering

14. Bukuya
15. Matagi
16. Sam Lousi
17. Mateo

Big game this week yes, but resting Hurrell if he isn't 100% is a must (we will definitely need home the following week). Henry is more then up to the challenge in the centres. Rest Seb and give Sam Lousi a game. No leulaui, but halves cover in Mateo if it comes to it.

I think in this day and age of nrl the quality coming off the bench has to be a massive consideration hence mutts starting from the bench. And also I think at the moment the warriors have one of the top 3 benches in the comp and needs to stay that way as it is a point of difference in quality the warriors have over other sides that gives a considerable advantage.

Benry strikes me as the sort of guy who'd do extras just for shits and giggles. He's probably still there.

Not necessary our strongest side, but with injuries, the players I suspect will be coming back and also the need to manage some of the newer players through to a (hopeful) finals series, I think the team to play the Knights will look like this:
1 Tomkins
2 Fusitua/Kata
3 Henry
4 Laumape
5 Vatuvei
6 Townsend
7 Johnson
8 Lillyman
9 Friend
10 Matagi
11 Bukuya
12 Sione Lousi
13 Mannering

14 TL
15 Matulino
16 Mateo
17 Rapira

I've heard Konrad is unlikely to play this weekend. Expect TL and Friendly to share dummy half or TL to slip into Lock if Mannering is required to move to the second row or centre if (heaven forbid) injuries occur during the game.

As said either in here (or in other threads) Cappy is really pleased with the time and effort Sione is putting in, especially when he was moved to centre - there's a new degree of maturity to him which is impressing to lot of the staff and senior players. Here's hoping he remains injury free and takes the opportunity to cement himself a place in FG.

Cappy mentioned something in the press conference about thinking about what is the best team going forward, I assume he means what is the best team for winning one off games this year, regardless of developing players or who is going to play where next year and that.

Will have to wait for Konrad coming back to get that best team on the park but with that in mind…

Team had real trouble containing the offload last week, might not matter as much against the knights, who more likely to spread to the halves and centres than pop offloads through the middle, but if we play the cowboys in the finals, they will kill us with the big men getting second phase ball out to Thurston.

King tacklebot himself Simon Mannering would fix that issue quick smart, the man does not get tired and with ikahihifo wearing down and friend still being hobbit sized the keptin will solidify that part of the game.

Which puts Matulino on the left with Chad and Laumape, it worked great before he got hurt, Henry is needed to play centre this week in place of Hurrell.

So right side second row is Lousi, has played the minutes, I don’t know he is a long term option there, but for this week okay, bench of TL, Mateo, Rapira/Matagi (depending on who starts), Bukuya/Ikahihifo.
Might play Bukuya this week as they need back up on the edge as Mateo has played in the middle ever since his reinstatement.

My Team

1. Tomkins
2. Fusitua
3. Laumape
4. Henry
5. Vatuvei
6. Townsend
7. Johnson
8. Lillyman
9. Leuluai
10. Rapira
11. Matulino
12. Lousi
13. Mannering

14. Havili
15. Bukuya
16. Mateo
17. Lousi/Gubb

I think giving Friend, Matagi and Ikahihfo a rest is needed for the Knights game not so much dropping them the 3 of them just seem fatigued

I am surprised to hear that Seb was doing them, he aimed up big time in the first 20 mins of the game (although he didn't play particularly well) and he was absolutely buggered when he came off after his first stint, they showed him sitting on the bench and he was so bad that Wiki thought he was injured. To hear that he was getting suicides after the game is a bit rough, thought we couldve done with a bigger dose of Sam Rapira who only played about 25mins and had 4 carries.

I have a suspicion that Rapira may not be 100% with his back issue maybe but hope he has a big one this week Snowden and Mason looked on fire against the storm they will need to be stopped big time hence why im giving Matagi Seb and Friend the week off I feel they are our weaker defenders well not friend of course but the other two slip off a few tackles too often hopefully its just fatigue because they all have been playing not bad just due for a break

Sort of. He meant he was thinking about the best team going forward, into the finals, not just one off games. I.e. He doesn't want to risk Konrad to jag a one off win against the Knights and have him re-injure himself, because he wants him fit for the finals.

Yeah, that was my understanding, thinking about that, in a finals game, do we want the specialist hooker/half on the bench or would people rather four forwards, with Henry as the utility? The backline pretty much picks itself with poor old danger unlikely to return unless further injury to someone else.

Depends on the opposition I reckon.

If we play someone like the Souths, Doggies, Cowboys, Roosters I would prefer a 4 man forward bench to combat their big boppers.

If we play the Storm, Broncos, Eels, Panthers I would prefer an interchange hooker ala Havalli

TBH I don't really like the Friend / TL hooker combo either as they don't really provide any impact when they come on.

Didnt i hear somewhere that Lillyman played injured last weekend? Then we all saw Manu injured the week before, and i dont expect Neilson back for 2 -3 weeks, Konrad is out. Henry may be still carrying an injury, and TL looks like he still is. I see this week as a defining game, lose it and a good chance that they drop out of the 8, but win it and aggravate more injuries and they might make finals only to fall out after the first game.

The Warriors arent the only team to see this happening and are fortunate that Shaun Johnson, and Fusitua are both coming back rested just as we need them. But i dont see this as a week to play safety first football. People need to put their bodies on the line so i have what i think is the best possible team out there.

1 Sam Tomkins
2 David Fusitua
3 Ben Henry
4 Ngani Laumape
5 Manu Vatuvei
6 Chad Townsend
7 Shaun Johnson
8 Jacob Lillyman
9 Nathan Friend
10 Sam Rapira
11 Jason Bukuya
12 Ben Matulino
13 Simon Mannering

14 Thomas Leuluai
15 Sebastine Ikahihifo
16 Feleti Mateo
17 Suaia Matagi

You get the impression that our Coach was very happy about winning that game.

Recons there are only a few small adjustments away from being spot on.

First half McFadden thought was outstanding ( there's your game plan in that forty minutes executed ).

Forced changes through injury disrupted everything and the ball retention fell to a insane 60 %

They use this phrase compete a lot. 'We didn't give ourselves the opportunity to compete ' it is not new.....Elliot used to say it a lot.....It's not rocket surgery either, in pub terms your talking ' no ball no territory you lose'

Applied in your favor that Mantra is is where it's at.

In goal kick insanity.

No ball no territory no two points.

It's a good way to win a game. It is more sound than say out attacking a team or out defending a team.

Those things are important but they are not the Governing dynamic of a territorial game of strategy.

If that mentality stays at the heart of the Warriors thinking then they will have a shot at the tittle.

You don't have to have a team stacked with stars to implement it. But we have some genuine star fire power and some talent on the rise.

They've broken the game down to it's absolute basic Maxim.

" Stick to our processes " is another wanky term you hear all the players spouting.

Pub talk that means " Keep doing it ".

That simple approach to the game will suit our players who lack sophistication. Instead of " Smash them " ....it's all about " strangle them"

Good.

Consistency at last....welcome to the next level Gangsters......keep feeding these kids big words with a simple 'how too' instruction list.

It might get ingrained. Then your talking about a team of thinking players.

Based on Shaun Johnson being a definite return, Nielson being out for a few weeks, Hurrell being rested this weekend, Fusitua being ready to return and Seb not quite 100%:

1. Tomkins
2. Fusitua
3. Laumape
4. Benry
5. Beast
6. Townsend
7. Johnson
8. Lillyman
9. Leuluai
10. Matagi
11. Bukuya
12. Matulino
13. Mannering

14. Friend
15. Mateo
16. Rapira
17. Seb

Reduce Seb's minutes off of the bench for a few weeks if hes not quite 100%. Off the pine, we could really use his energy and effort if only for 10-15mins at a time.

Bukuya must be hungry to get back out on the pitch and prove himself as well so I believe he should be included - hopefully he and Shaun Johnson can rekindle that combination which was brewing a while back.

Mutts can reach devestating form is he plays second row. Thats where Cappy has to play him.

Hurrell still out so no better replacement than Mr "fix-it" Ben Henry to slot into center.

Start leuluai at hooker, hes been back long enough to get back into the jist of things. We need his service from dummy half because Friends isnt quite up to par (maybe due to his defensive workload?). Regardless, bring Friend off the bench for a 15-20min spell to give TL a breather. Should be alllll gooooooodddd.

Will need a big contribution from Mateo this week too. He's been delivering these last few weeks as well.
