General Pick Your Team Rnd 20 vs Manly

My team
I am expecting Sam Rapira to be injured otherwise he comes in for Lousi.
1. Tomkins
2. Ngani
3. Konnie
4. Nielson
5. Manu
6. Townsend
7. Johnson
8. Lillyman
9. TL
10. Sione Lousi
11. Henry
12. Matulino
13. Mannering

14. Mateo
15. Seb
16. Matagi
17. Friend

Rationale
Ngani comes in for Fusitua. Fusitua is a good finisher and is becoming better at taking hit ups but his defense is awful. He has been caught out of position a number of times and last night he was absolutley exposed by a well coached outfit. Just like Ngani, Konnie and Fish he is struggling in his first stint in first grade. He needs to go away and work on some things.

Nielson needs to stay because Fusitua has become too much of a liability. Nielson is doing his job and I don't believe that Kata is ready for first grade at all. We saw last night how someone who dominates NSW cup can be shown to be well out of his depth.

TL starts, he will be better for the game last night and by being out from the start he should be familiar with the pace of the game. If he can get some dummy half runs early it should put the middle of the Manly defense in some doubt and provide opportunities out wide and time for our halves to work. I also like to have Friend coming on with 20-30 minutes to go as he can add some enthusiasm into our defense. His energy and stability should have an impact and help us close the game.

Henry to start because his combination with Johnson is outstanding and needs as much time as possible out in the middle. He is more attacking than Bukuya and his defense is on par with him. Bukuya can rest again.

Sione Lousi to start. Sione should be chomping at the bit and full of energy. I don't like when he comes off the bench, he tries to do to much. Get him going as early as possible. Matagi to sub him and we get a hard running forward off the bench to keep our momentum going.

The rest of the bench: Our slip in the second quarter has been largely because we take off our simple, hard, straight running forwards and bring on ball players and guys that are not as strong defensively.
With the back row I have selected we have guys who can play for longer and don't have to change them all at once. Mannering can play 80 minutes if need be, he also tightens up our middle defensively so Seb can play as a prop/lock. Also in having Henry and Matulino start they can play long minutes and we can hold back Mateo until he is needed.

Don't think Cappy will pick this team, but it is what I would do.

My selection with Manly in mind.
  1. Tomkins
  2. Nielsen
  3. Hurrell
  4. Laumape
  5. Vatuvei
  6. Townsend
  7. Johnson
  8. Lillyman
  9. Friend
  10. Matagi
  11. Henry
  12. Mannering (c)
  13. Ikahihifo
  14. Leuluai
  15. Matulino
  16. Rapira / The best Lousi
  17. Bukuya
If it wasn't Manly, i would persevere with Paasi and given the 2 jersey to Kata. Fusitu'a will be back. Freshen up, recharge and return a better player. He probably had a lot on his mind with the possible shift to fullback this week too. May have worn him down.

Another reason to put Nielson on the wing outside Konrad, and keep Laumapi playing center with Manu, is that Nielson can contest the high ball, where as Konrad plus Laumapi don't stand a chance in a jumping contest. Those to are tanks, and tanks don't fly.

Warriors Orange Peeler
IMO the whole David Fusitua being dropped debate is easily cleared with one simple question. Do you see David Fusitua as the Warriors long term option for wing? If you do then he is forgiven for his lapses in the Broncos game. If you dont then he gets dropped to Reserve Grade with a view to offload him as soon as possible.

He's named in my team because I do believe he offers a hell of a lot more then he doesnt. Think back to Manu Vatuvei's infamous game against the Eels in 2007 where he couldnt catch the ball to save his life. Ivan Cleary, despite plenty of pressure from both media and fans, stuck by Manu. IMO this is what needs to happen in Fusitua's case. You dont drop someone you hope to develop for one bad game just like you dont get fired from your job after one cock up...

My ideal team this week

1 Sam Tomkins
2 David Fusitua
3 Konrad Hurrell
4 Ngani Laumape
5 Manu Vatuvei
6 Chad Townsend
7 Shaun Johnson
8 Sam Rapira
9 Nathan Friend
10 Suaia Matagi
11 Jayson Bukuya
12 Simon Mannering
13 Sebastine Ikahihifo

14 Jacob Lillyman
15 Ben Matulino
16 Charlie Gubb or Sam Lousi
17 Ben Henry

Here's what will happen though...

No way Cappy will drop Leuluai, he's either going to be 14, 6 or 9 for the rest of the year, you won't see him in NSW cup.

Nielsen will survive the return of Laumape and Fusitua will get dropped.

Passi will return to the NSW Cup. Bukuya will make his return to the team.

Mateo will keep his spot.

Rapira will still be injured.

Predicted Team this week...

1 Sam Tomkins
2 Dane Nielsen
3 Konrad Hurrell
4 Ngani Laumape
5 Manu Vatuvei
6 Chad Townsend
7 Shaun Johnson
8 Suaia Matagi
9 Nathan Friend

11 Jayson Bukuya
12 Simon Mannering
13 Sebastine Ikahihifo

I see him fighting with Glen Fisiiahi. Glen, and others such as Ngani Laumape, Konrad Hurrell, Sebastine Ikahihifo, whom I regard as better players, all have benefitted from being put back to first grade. I think Konrad is a great example, sometimes it's too big an ask to have teenagers play week in week out without mental fatigue wearing them down.

It's not a matter of a cock up. He looks worn out. The effort on Kahu and his general lack of involvement indicates a young fellow who is under great stress.

What happened to Kata, that guy reminded me of Matt Utai. Solidly built, low to the ground, a strong runner that is hard to get off their feet. He would be an option if Fusitua needed a break.

I see Fusitua as our long term winger, but if he's carrying an injury or struggling with the week to week grind then a rest or run in NSW cup won't hurt him.

I wouldn't drop him just because he played badly, but I would consider a change depending on the reason he played badly which can only be answered by the coaching staff and player.

I don't know if Fusitua is our long term option. What about Fish, Kata, Ngani? We won't keep all 4. I'm happy to keep Fusitua but only if he can learn to defend better, which so far he hasn't.
Fusitua should be dropped because he has too many errors in his game and needs some time away from first grade to iron out his flaws and get some confidence in his ability to defend.
Konnie, Ngani, Seb, Nielson, Townsend all improved after spending time away from first grade. I expect Fusitua to do the same,

Of course David Fusitua is our long term option, he's only played a handful of games and is still a young man. He's already proven he's 1st grade material and only needs more time in 1st grade where he belongs to develop further.

How can people expect instant success all the time?

One thing we have to remember with player mistakes these days is that there will be work done to remedy the situation, and consequences for repeated infringements.

I very much doubt that we'll see Fusitua trying one of those lame-ass pushes instead of a proper tackle again. He's learned the hard way he needs to go lower if he hopes to have the effect he was after.

Technique throughout the team is improving as a whole, and it'll be interesting to see what kind of game Mateo plays this weekend (if he's not dropped for playing too loosely).

Paasi, Fusitua, Leuluai/Mateo out | Bukuya, Laumape, Rapira/Gubb in (depending on fitness, likely Gubb)

Paasi will be back at some point, he is carrying on something of a tradition for vulcan-warrior forwards, Lousi started the year with a multiple fumbles against the eels and was hooked, Ikahihifo had a shit game against the sharks and Gubb threw away an opportunity to beat the dragons with a truly retarded offload, all have come back and played a role for the team, one of them even made himself a must pick every week. Bukuya an easy choice to replace him.

Fusitua, apart from that superman dive against the eels, he has not done a lot in recent weeks, yes, it’s a little ‘what have you done for me lately’ but Manly expose poor backline defence more than any other team in the comp, we are down to 5 centres/wingers with NRL experience left standing, Fusitua is the weakest of the 5 at this point in time, he can come back and get his confidence picking on shit teams like the raiders and sharks which are upcoming, but not this week. I’d actually put Neilsen outside of Konrad, and Laumape back to left centre, you get the defence and experience and mitigate the fact that he can’t really pass the ball.

TL looked a bit over hyped, should be better for the run, Mateo had 10 minutes of stupid, then went back to his pretty good form in the second half. The other forwards deserve to stay, my team puts Matulino on the left, Bukuya on the right, Mannering in the middle, Henry is utility of the bench, Ikahihifo is lock/prop, need another specialist prop so one of TL/Mateo makes way… If Rapira can’t play maybe you keep both of them, but it starts to look a bit lightweight.

IMO the whole David Fusitua being dropped debate is easily cleared with one simple question. Do you see David Fusitua as the Warriors long term option for wing? Fusitua is 19 years old, its not quite the same as a 21 year old Vatuvei with 40 odd NRL games already, if winning the game is the priority he’ll have to seriously think about leaving him out, if only for the one week. If its good enough for Townsend/Mateo/Neilsen/Lousi to be dropped after bad performances, its good enough for the young winger too.

I don't expect instant success. And he's had a couple of great games for us. But his rookieness is still a factor and I don't think it would be good for his development to face the best edge attack in the comp after showing the world his current weaknesses. What are Foran, Stewart, Matai and Taufua going to be thinking about attacking Fusitua's edge right now?

And if he does get toweled up again the fan hatred will set him back 12 mts. Right now he gets a pass for a one off bad game and some sympathy for being dropped. That's a good result for a 19year old.

And if he goes down to reserves and tackles his balls off then he's back in the FG squad in no time, such is his attacking flare. If Fusitua gets his D up to Nielsons level hes our No. 1 right winger, hands down.

4. Laumape
5. Vatuvei
6. Townsend
7. Johnson
8. Lillyman
9. Friend
10. Matagi
11. Bukuya
12. Matulino
13. Mannering

14. Leuluai
15. Ikahihifo
16. Henry
17. Gubb/Either of the Lousi brothers

(This is assuming Raps is still injured)

For as well as Nielson has been playing (despite no one wanting to believe so), he is unlucky to get the cut this week. But Laumape is the future, and Dane shouldn't be with the club beyond this season. Nielson doesnt offer the diversity of skills in which Laumape can bring, and poor Manu hasn't been presented with scoring opportunities due to Nielsons sub-par passing game.

Time to bring back Mutts and Boogs back into the starting side, there was a chemistry building on both sides of the field with these two blokes and their halves. We need Bukuya to play with the mongrel and power that he is capable of. Matulino opens up opportunities around him when playing second row and can have a bigger impact on the game than when he's playing prop. Benry and Ikahihifo to cover either off of the bench (pushing Mateo out of the fold), in attempts to prevent the negative effect the bench players had on the Warriors momentum as these two stick to game-plans and just focus on doing their roles well. Gubb (or either of the Lousi boys) to come back onto the bench as prop cover this week for Paasi who, unfortunately, had a game to forget.

Cappy wont drop off Leuluai, so he better work on keeping the structure together once he's brought onto the pitch. His passing from dummy half is a level beyond Friends, but having missed the past 3 months of footy showed in terms of his effort. If TL stays healthy and builds some form, I would not be surprised to see him replace Friend all together by finals footy time.

Not too sure Mateo will be dropped off though, as he steadied himself in the 2nd stanza Sat night after a horror 1st half. Also, its hard to determine whether he'll stick with Fuss, or send him to detention in the RG as pusnishment for letting his teammates down with half-assed efforts of D. With Nielson being solid without standing out, we could see him slot into wing outside Laumape. Also not sold on whether Cappy has enough trust to bring Bukuya back into the squad after his omissions the past 2 games either.

Gonna be an interesting team reveal tomorrow, thats for sure.

I'm thinking Fusitua will bounce back with a return to the comfort of Mt Smart.

Therefore Laumape replaces Nielsen (who had a good game but doesn't offer as much as Ngani).

If Hurrell is out, Laumape to replace him with Dane holding his spot.

If Rapira is not ready then Sam Lousi comes onto the bench ahead of Paasi. He offers more than Gubb and we only need one of them back.

So:

1 Tomkins
2 Fusitua
3 Hurrell (Laumape)
4 Laumape (Nielsen)
5 Vatuvei
6 Chownsend
7 Johnson
8 Lillyman
9 Friend
10 Matagi
11 Henry
12 Mannering
13 Ikahihifo

14 Leuluai
15 Matulino
16 Rapira (Sam Lousi)
17 Mateo

David Fusitua needs a couple of weeks in lower grade. I've seen it a number of times where experienced coaches will send young blokes back down prior to the outcomes of fatigue, but yesterday Dave looked cumbersome and played God awful footy.

1 Sam Tomkins
2 Ngani Laumape
3 Konrad Hurrell
4 Dane Nielsen
5 Manu Vatuvei
6 Chad Townsend
7 Shaun Johnson
8 Jacob Lillyman
9 Nathan Friend
10 Suaia Matagi
11 Ben Henry
12 Simon Mannering (c)
13 Sebastine Ikahihifo

Thomas Leuluai
Ben Matulino
Jayson Bukuya
Sam Lousi

This team but for mine Sione Lousi,
More proven to offer something on attack at NRL level.

Had two games back at NSW cup level

I like Sam Lousi alot though longterm
