Pick Your Team Pick Your Team 2018 Rnd 5 - Warriors vs Cowboys

Lino obviously went well today, though that was his first ever NRL win. Sure he's been short of opportunities and has usually come into a side devoid of confidence, but the fact still remains.

If Shaun Johnson is fit then he should play. Given it's a groin strain I'd assume he won't recover inside a week, though listening to Kearney it sounds like he was 50/50 but was sent home as they didn't want to risk him this early in the season. Lino trained with the side for most of the week.

I think Gavet deserves his spot if fit and Lisone should take his place on the bench. Backline otherwise stays the same.

Same team but bring in Mannering. Lisone for Satae. That team should wallop the cowboys on current form. Strangle JT like we did with Cronk and contain Taumololo and we can return years of humiliating losses in Townsville this weekend at MST/

If the cowboys come with that side to side shit with Thurston receiving the ball every time, we might break the old boy apart, he's been a sitting duck this year.

I'd just like to see Mannering play in this new warriors, it'd be like a holiday for him, no more 80 minutes, everyone working just as hard, could be real good. Probably take Sao's spot.

Some thoughts from someone who put 5 g Bookie cash on Warriors 13 plus.

This is a happy fit team that enjoys playing together.

Everybody in the 17 is committed to fulfilling their role. Hence Lino could use his skills to execute his role. Which he did very well. Praise has to go to those round him as well.

If fit Johnstone comes back in.

Gavet will come back in but no one deserves to be dropped but it is the tealities.

Tevaga may be one of the safest. His leg tackles stop so much post contact metres.

The other positive for me is the continuing development of our left side both sides of the ball.

Depth is developing which is vital in such a draining comp. Particulary in the Halves. Any teams true strength is in the back up players.

I like Lino and its good to have depth in the halves, he and Shaun Johnson bring different attrbutes, Shaun Johnson has the running game and is more dangerous when he uses it, the side benefit of this is teams target him because they are wary of giving him space so that helps others get space. Lino is better at support play and last play options especially his short kicking game, probably also be a better goal kicker but I havent checked the stats.
I would pick Shaun Johnson over Lino at the moment but dont think the gap is as big as some say and I wuld be getting Lino more 1st grade gametime, want to see him against someone who puts more pressure on us, the Roosters were mud.

You can tell a players attitude by his attitude in defense. Mason to me is quite limited, certainly no where near Shaun Johnson's natural ability. He doesn't have that big weapon like speed, Mason however maximises his talent with hard graft. You don't do measured short kicks like that without a lot of practice. That goes a long way and says a lot about the character of the guy..

The balance of the team is coming together nicely! Good to see Tevaga developing into a Hinchcliffe-like middle forward who can cover hooker, his stints in first-grade last year seems to have prepared him well. We have big man after big man fit and running it straight all night; Sao, Passi, Pulu, Satae, with Gavet to come back.. and they talk up the Cowboys having the best pack!

Im also glad now the NRL world has seen what Lino can do and we have an established backup half which I think is critical over the 26 weeks (plus finals here we come)

After a a decade of lean years and tough going being a supporter, there seems to be depth right across the park and boy is it refreshing to see.

You bring up good points. I've watched Lino for some time. It started in the year Elliot got fired. I was sitting at Eden Park in the rain watching NSW cup lose to the dragons.

I couldn't understand why he wasn't playing first grade. He had a sound kicking game. Tactically he could lead the side around like an Aussie half. But nobody ever talked about him being a prospective fger.

I couldn't put my finger on it until I saw him sprint. Too slow. But that was the only weakness. He probably complements Shaun Johnson like Green does. So the question becomes what do you lose and gain from each?

If he replaced Shaun Johnson you lose x factor. You might get more structure and better attack decisions made. But you might lose that ability to clinch close games like the Raiders one.

Replacing Green. I don't think we'd gain anything. It's almost like for like except Green is more likely to get you a 40/20.

I think with the whole team taking responsibility for everything, it brings out the best in everyone. Makes it harder to select.

When Luck was playing, I had the theory that teams who had a Luck or Fensom type player were less successful because it allowed weak-minded players to slack off and leave it to them.

Whereas when the whole team puts in, nobody gets too tired to attack or defend. Everybody is a threat. And the x factor player can actually be searching for winning opportunities instead of plugging holes or worrying about dual roles.

Another similar pattern was Manu covering the forwards with his hitups. Took away responsibility of certain players. And to me that was the culture that crippled us.

Ego players like Lolohea, Hurrell, Locke, Hayne. They think their brilliance affords them some slack. It causes team disharmony. Can't reach your full potential with those types around.

So I would pick:

Shaun Johnson, Mannering, Gavet, Lisone. Pulu starting prop with G. Sao, Paasi, Tevaga, Satae reserves.

I think Blair, Harris, Mannering are the best chance any team has of restricting Taumalolo.

Wow - great call on the Bookie cash. Let’s go with the team you pick.....
