There is a huge difference in grade fitness needed for a prop from nsw cup to first grade. For instance Gubb looks mediocre in first grade, but when he had a decent stint early this year in firsts and the next week went down played nsw. It was like he was playing at light speed and defensively out working all the other forwards hand over fist and his runs. Props coming into firsts need to be drip fed, it doesn't happen overnight, you gotta build up the motor.
