Changes Needed!

Cappy gets a bad rap on some things, but one thing that isn’t in dispute (IMO) is he a TERRIBLE manager of an interchange bench.

Selects bad options and uses them seemingly at random.

Take Matulino, he’s gone from coming off the bench to being some sort of 80 minute super forward?
Get real, play him in two 25-30 minute blocks with a break in the middle. How a top prop is supposed to be used.

Konrads brief run as a lucky charm is ova, two backs on the bench is not an option at this level.

If its important to give TL some minutes (I agree with that part) and you aren’t going to sub Issac, then what are you left with?
Vete is the only proper go forward man on the bench as Gubb is not that kind of player. Crazy stuff.

For this week:

Hurrell, Robson, Gubb (punishment for having a mare) are OUT. Lisone is borderline as well. He might be too lightweight for the bulldogs.

Thomspon and then Sao, Gavet, Lane, Lisone or Lauitiiti or any 2 specialist forwards over 6ft1 and 105kg I don’t really care which, IN.

And manu if he’s 100%. If he’s likely to limp off, then just keep Wright for another week.

Start Vete, sub with Lillyman after 15-20.
Sub Matulino with Gavet after 25-30.
Inject Sao or Lane or whomever in the second half for one of the backrowers.

That’s 6 changes if you bring 3 bench forwards on, and then off again, still got 2 left.

You have “senior” workhorse prop on at all times, you have a hard charging shorter minutes one on too.
You have some sort of offloading strike player available, not a center masquerading as a prop.
Keep Tevaga or even Robson up your sleeve if you really need utility cover for TL breaking down.

Does that not make more sense?

It does....until you get an injury, someone has a shocker of a game, or the opposition controls possession for large periods and you're forced to sub out guys who are shattered earlier than you'd hoped etc.

Things are simple when you can remove reality and just play out the ideal scenario. I guess that's why our side always looks good on paper. :(

Yes, wouldn’t criticise him for the broncos game for instance, nothing you can do about a wing and centre going off injured.

But those are factors all teams have to consider, and apart from Jason Taylors 3 hooker policy, I don’t see other teams interchanging a guy whose only skill is trying to break legs in defence, a short of a gallop hooker/half who comes on a plays neither of those roles, and an error prone center all on the field at the SAME time.

Not a huge amount of change really. Shaun Johnson back to 7 to see if that changes anything. Probably not but whatever. Robbo out, and hopefully never seen in FG ever again. Sao in so we can finally stop using a fuckin prop at lock. Lane on the bench because we need a strike second rower, especially while Thompson is out. Loathed to keep Hurrell in there on the bench, but again with Thompson being out I don't see much choice.

I don't like the Hurrell interchange, but the other two are exaggerations to make it seem worse than it is.

Gubb may not be effective with the ball in hand, but Gavet has had his own issues and the only other genuine options are Lane/Sao but they would fall into your "short of a gallop" category so they shouldn't have been considered for the Manly game on that basis. At best gavet is there for Hurrell and Gubb is still there.

As for TL, Tevaga could have held his spot, but TL offered more impact than the rest of the bench and half the starting side. I don't see how Tevaga would have made the slightest bit of difference out there and again what other options were there?

4. Kata
5. Manu
6. Johnson
7. Robson
8. Lillyman
9. Luke

I would do this as well. Johnson gives me the impression he is a bit of a Prima Donna.
I don't think he should be in the halves, he doesn't seem to be up to it.

Probably. But TL, Gubb and Hurrell, for various reasons, aren’t legitimate options to impact a game for more than 10 minutes, having all 3 on the same bench is wildly optimistic.

In hindsight Sao or Gavet or anyone of the NSW cup forwards could’ve played Hurrells or TL minutes, i.e bugger all, and given a bit more balance. They are at least specialists, not makeshifts chucked in the forwards because they need the game time.

Not that it would have changed the result, as you say, half the starters all picked the same week to have dud games.

Anyway, looks like McFadden has a full deck to play with this week, see if he recognises that it was a bit of a shit show.

At 2-4, time for a change, because continuing as we have been hasn't worked. Try Lolo at 6 and Shaun Johnson back to 7. Couldn't be any worse. Bring Wells into the wing with Manu if he's healthy.

I swear, these guys are like employees going to work. If they like what they're doing, and it's fun, they go for it. If it's hard work, they leave it to someone else or can't wait til closing time.

i thought we looked alot better with him on the field last night. but why put him at 13? is it a case of pick your best players and then find a position for them or did you see something last night?
More to do with dropping the Captain for a week,
I was thinking that would take away a lot of experience and leadership (there is always a cost with keyboard novelty selections).

Watching this season I get the impression the Warriors have to run their most stable line up at the kick off, some how set a template of how they intend to play the rest of the game.

I like, I like. I think I'm just about over Konnie now. Love him, but I think I'm romanticing 2013 with him. Would love to see him on the centre, just in case I'm wrong.

I don't think he should be in the halves, he doesn't seem to be up to it.

Perhaps TL into right centre in a position swap with Ayshford.

This can give him a Laurie Daley ball playing centre role.

Even put Konman outside TL instead of Ayshford. Then we'd have a back 3 of Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Konnie and Manu all of whom could form powerful kick returns to start sets giving the middles the first 3 hit ups to get into position.

Shaun Johnson imho is having anxieties about;

1. Don't want to break my ankle again
2. Why should I give 110% if some of the team are only giving 50%?
3. What people say about me actually does have a great effect on my internal head mechanics.

Yeah this was my thinking:

Fusitua - Outside Ayshford to help him on the defensive end, good at finishing, decent under the high ball
Wells - Speed!
Lolohea at 6 - So we can have a running half again.
Johnson at 7 - Can control the game, kick and pass, doesnt have to run.
Sao at Lock - Smart player with a huge engine, can attack and defend and has a bit of size

Bench
TL - To interchange with Luke, dart from dummy half
Gavet - Size and aggression
Lane - Size and skills
Lisone - Skillz and aggression

6 Again

I doubt many think we'll have the same bench we used against Manly for the Bulldogs game so I'm expecting some changes tomorrow when the team is named. Bodene Thompson should come back from injury, hopefully Manu's recovered from his hamstring injury. I'm going with big bodies from the bench and both Shaun Lane & Ligi Sao had solid games last week in the NSW Cup, Robson moves out of the 17 with Jazz Tevaga in as cover for Luke and Leuluai in at half back. The rest of the bench covers Prop, Lock and Back Row so we at least have bench players in the right positions.

VODAFONE WARRIORS

1 ROGER TUIVASA-SHECK

2 TUIMOALA LOLOHEA

3 BLAKE AYSHFORD

4 SOLOMONE KATA

5 MANU VATUVEI / JONATHAN WRIGHT

6 SHAUN JOHNSON

7 THOMAS LEULUAI

8 ALBERT VETE

9 ISSAC LUKE

10 BEN MATULINO

11 BODENE THOMPSON

12 RYAN HOFFMAN (c)

13 SIMON MANNERING

Interchange:

14 JAZZ TEVAGA

15 JACOB LILLYMAN

16 LIGI SAO

17 SHAUN LANE
