What an article. Covid has played a part in both those losses, Gould because he couldn’t do his job properly because of travel restrictions and O’Sullivan partly to stay in Aussie. Never mind the loss of revenue for the club with no gate takings and no home ground. Could have also been arseholes and made Roger Tuivasa-Sheck see out the year, I’m sure they would have viewed his tutorage of Walsh for the rest of the season more valuable, rather than Townsend for half a season.
Good points!

Looks like a typical buzz rothfield piece. These guys are on the verge of weeping when the storm can’t get back to Victoria at times, when it’s us just suck it up.
That's what I was thinking when I read it.

No covid and we would of had a better chance of retaining Gould as it was a role he was passionate about. The Bulldogs would of still come knocking as they are a mess. It would of still been a worry with his previous association with the club but we would of had a good chance of retaining him. Not being able to get to New Zealand was the main reason for Gould leaving. He was supposed to work with the Warriors and the NZRL.

O'Sullivan wasn't able to fulfill his role as he couldn't get to see local league in New Zealand to scout talent. The role at the Dolphins is ideal for a Recruitment Manager as you can start from scratch. Also with them only having 2022 to build a roster they need to get moving quickly.

The comment about losing our best player. We lost him early due to covid. May have also helped with his decision to leave with the club being based in Australia with no end it sight. The comment is also from an Australian where union is a minority sport and wouldn't understand why someone would want to leave the NRL for less money. Where us New Zealanders see the All Blacks as the big goal sporting wise and he'd earn less in NZ but has more opportunities overseas.

The being put up in the best resorts is all well and good but they are still away from home for 2 going on 3 years. A lot of Australians struggle signing under normal conditions with the Warriors or a Super League club as they get homesick. That is one player who has decided to move not an entire team and support staff.

The club being in Australia will have a lasting impact. Financially they aren't in front of their home crowds and aren't really enticing good crowds where they have been based. Memberships are a hard sell when you don't get to see your team. Harder to be a proper club with the team in Australia away from their development players.

Rothfield pretty much always picks us for the spoon the only exceptions is when he has a ax to grind against another club or wants to justify his rants in his articles against a club.

Well said Snake. Sadly Covids impact on the club will linger for awhile.
One silver lining in all of this is the owners commitment and still supporting the club and fighting to do whatever they can get to get the best result. I’d hate to imagine if Eric Watson was still the owner in this predicament

I can also see the impact not being mentioned in a few years if we go through a rough patch or struggle financially. To be honest as a fan who want to win every week I probably will be guilty of that myself if we do struggle. I would look into it a bit more than the journalists who should look into the details.

Can see the NRL360 discussion now. The NRL helped them out financially during covid they are home now and struggling the NRL can't continue to bail them out. Even though in reality the club would be trying to recoup from the covid period.

Similar with the development of the junior talent. They will complain that we don't have systems in place or haven't signed or developed talent. Reality is we were trying to fix that with Gould and O'Sullivan but were based away from home.

A bit hard to take going into 2021 we had the team training in front of Gould and O'Sullivan two experienced guys who know what a successful squad looks like. 2022 both are gone.

A sign of how respected O'Sullivan is and the job he has done that everyone is so disappointed on his loss.

Gould's was more of a loss as it would of been interesting to see what he could of got signed off or put in place.

O'Sullivan started slow with low key signings like Burr, Curren, Murchie. Before getting the cap space to work with to sign some bigger names. Also seeing us being a bit more strategic, approaching guys still under contract, guys out of favour so the current club can pay part of they salary.

I’d imagine that when given an early release POS signed a non disclosure agreement, meaning that he couldn’t target Warriors recruitment WIP?

He talks highly of the club so he would have some ethics and won’t go out of his way to sign Warriors targets or current high profile players?

PNG Kiwi

At the end of the day POS had to look after himself and his future.
We can only hope there was a non competition agreement of sorts, such as ear marked recruits being off his target list, and no poaching of Warrior players, for a certain moment in time.
NRL is a big business and you would think business rules would apply to employment agreements etc.

The problem with hiring a "guru" is that gurus often claim secret knowledge, methods, and ways of operating. They are often not willing to share this knowledge (because it is often gut feelings and not easy to articulate; because it is bolstered by a biased memory for successes but not failures --and it's the guru's only advantage). I favour the NZW putting money into analytics. They may not be perfect, but at least the algorithms are explicit, correctable, and are based on measurable factors.

With POS leaving for the Dolphins would John Ackland be an option?
He’s stepped down from the Mt Albert role and still teaching at St Peters.
Maybe I’m a dinosaur living in the past? Perhaps he doesn’t have the Aust contacts but surely the club has contacts and the likes of Ivan Cleary would help him out.
Thoughts?

This is a story on another forum, not sure if there’s any truth to it.
