I thought Rock was making a joke about a bad movie she had done, but according to the entertainment encyclopedia that is my wife she suffers from alopecia and has talked in articles about how she feels like a broken woman.

In that context you would be pissy at a guy who takes a cheap shot at her in front of the entire world.

It could be then end of Rock's career there - the Smith's are royalty in Hollywood.

I watched a YouTube video and the host was going on about his balding head before talking about the Smith/Rock incident. I was wondering WTF he was talking about.

At first, I thought it was fake due to the funny noise but that would have been Rock's microphone.

A weird situation. Likely nothing will come of it besides memes and jokes as it was a slap, not a punch. If he punched him and knocked him down and humiliated him more it would be an easy assault case seeing as it was broadcast worldwide.

I dunno. Jada Pinkett looked pretty gutted with the gag.
At first, I didn't see her as it looked like someone else was next to Will Smith. The way the seats were curved the other lady was behind him, just looked close to him.

He did apologize later. Well to everyone (academy etc) but not Chris Rock.

They can't win with award shows. It's either over the top woke which turns the audience off or they can't handle being told how the are hypocrites like from Ricky Gervais. Now they need to be careful in case someone gets too sensitive and walks on stage.

What I dont understand about the Oscars, its supposed to be a formal and prestigious occasion, yet they bring on comedians like Rock and Gervais whose main goal is to take cheap shots at the actors and turn it all into a shit show.

Makes no sense.

I'm going with real based on Chris Rock's response afterwards. Looked and sounded shaken.

Will Smith is a dick
There is also footage of Denzel Washington and another guy trying with Will Smith during one of the breaks. Along with his agent or PR guy.

The last few years with actors preaching to people from their mansions has shone a new light on a lot of them. Gal Gadot trying to get a bunch of celebrities to sing Imagine for covid while they are in lockdown in their mansions with staff going out to get their food.

I think this is just Will having enough of all the memes and jokes at his expense. The whole entanglement issue, Jada pinket going on about 2pac (her ex) pretty much disrespecting will.
I think it's real for the fact Will is a pretty safe actor in that he wouldn't sign up to a gag where it makes his image look bad.

Ratings have been terrible the last few years and it had looked like they may get cancelled from major a network in the USA. No one cares about the political statements of actors who are pretty much adult pretenders. this is all done purely for a ratings pop and get people talking about their awards show. its all about selling ad space in that time slot.

part of me really thinks this is all fake or the very least producers of the show knew who they could get a good reaction out of and instructed rock to go for the jugular.

Saw Rock in Sydney a few years back, loved some of his old stuff and usually I’m a fan of edgy comedy but some of his material was a bit tone deaf and awkward (he did a slew of Aboriginal hunting jokes)

I thought it was a bit to begin with, something about the slap seemed weird, but then if it was a bit, it definitely wasn't done for laughs, it was just super awkward … delved into real and super uncomfortable all round. Chris Rock seemed genuinely shaken and unsettled afterwards. Weird scene.
