Omar Slaimankhel 2012 3

Quote from NRL.com

Omar god!
Omar Slaimankhel became the first Warriors player to score four tries in a Toyota Cup game when his team smashed Manly on Saturday - and that is just the start of the story! Slaimankhel's family walked for a week to escape war-torn Afghanistan for Pakistan; they arrived in New Zealand when Omar was three.

With a family background in weightlifting and athletics, Omar pursued rugby union before "stumbling" into league when he saw a Warriors junior development squad training and made some inquiries. It's a long way from Afghanistan to Brookvale, but the youngster made the world seem a small place as he raced away for try after try against the Eagles.

Watching this guy in the Toyota cup has been refreshing, a winger whos not big.

He has carved up recently.

I read that article. Thought it was good... untill they implied we were likely to lose to the 16th place Eels...

I knew a Slaimankhel in intermediate school, he was an absolute athletic freak, super fast, super strong, and one of those guys that was just ridiculously good at every sport he tried, . When i saw this guys name in the U20's i immediately i assumed it was him.. was disappointed to find it wasn't (didn't do the Math at the time because that would mean he'd be 23-25 years old)... Just read that Omar has 6 brothers... bet that guy i knew was one of em.

Haha actually just found this quote from:

https://findarticles.com/p/news-art...is_20090816/meet-afghan-warrior/ai_n51670930/

"The six Slaimankhel brothers all live in Auckland now, and have spawned a dynasty which includes athletes, weightlifters and rugby players."

Definitely one of them..

Would you have him over Glen at wing?

He is very evasive. First impressions is a young Jason Williams, the ex Kiwis and Bulldogs winger. The ability to go across field, then come forward, fend off a player, assess if he's created enough of a gap and go if he has. I like him. He could be a good 'un with a bit more work in the gym.

I love how nice and snug the 3 Auckland first division 1st XV Rugby titles from the last four years fit in our cabinet at MAGS.

You wouldn't think so, with all the hundreds of other trophies we have, huh?

Yeah lucky Burden sees academia as not so important and we were able to invest $600,000,000 billion in a big cabinet to keep them all in.

Omar is an awesome athlete, can't believe the trouble his family have endured and now he is here representing our country in Rugby League. Yea apparently he asked how to join the team and they put him through a trial run during the pre season and thats how he was selected. Awesome i say! going out there and doing it himself. He would be great in the long run, but at the moment he still needs more game time to gain experience, he is still very fresh to league. I dont rate him any where near Fish though, Fish is ripping it up!

Wasn't too bad. More about his family than him. It should be available on the TVNZ website.
