My oldest kid has 2pac and Nas t-shirts I always ask name me one of their songs?
They never can.

I suppose it's an era thing where kids at my school were listening to late 60s 70s rock.
Now it's cool to like 90s hip-hop.
That must make me one of the cool kids as I've just started listening to it.

I've mentioned before my musical tastes seem to be expanding as I get older. Not much for modern stuff but a wider ranger from my youth or before my time.

The hip hop stuff was from watching and doing a lot of boxing. Good to move your feet.

Yeah I recently got invited to a 90s party- A farkin 90s party! Do u believe that?
The 90s were only like 5 years ago
At least I could dress for one of those. My haircut is pretty much the same and I know what that looks like.

Had some flatmates throw a 70s party and they got annoyed I didn't put the effort in. I just got a an ugly plaid shelf. I need time to find a wig and to grow side burns. Plus for them flares were back in fashion then.

I think that was the night some dude had to much to drink and fell asleep in my bed. The one that looked like the spare room as it was off the garage. I told my mate to follow me as I have a solution. Went up stairs and grabbed a knife. The guy sobbered up pretty quickly with me waving that thing at him.

Love love my 90s r&b and hip hop. R&B Friday's is a concert held pretty much each year in Aus where they get the stars around that time like blackstreet, TLC, 112, Dru Hill, Ashanti etc to come and perform. Not sure if they goto NZ but tickets generally sell out.

During covid, dj cassidy started "pass the mic' which brought our childhood artists back once more performing from their homes. Some may enjoy this: . There's quite a few episodes like this.

On a further note, does anyone have a list of artists/groups that became popular around that time from nz/au? Thinking names like 3 the hardway, kulcha, cdb, purest form? (this is more for my sis who seems to have forgotten what we used to listen to back in the day...she only knows more commercially accessible these days)

Can I admit this on a league forum. I am a fan of the Seekers. I like The New Seekers better.
BTW I played league for years.
They were special, and it was really sad they ended like they did.
Keith Potger was the creative genius, Athol Guy the boss, Bruce Woodley the song writer and Judith the song bird.
Potger was the one who started the New Seekers, and pissed the others of no end. Bruce Woodley said they had an agreement nobody was going to do that.
They were all very serious about their craft. they were special.
This is from their reunion concert about 30 years ago:

Anyone watch reaction videos on YouTube. It's easy to go down a rabbit hole.

I like watching people react to older acts and get amazed at the crowd reactions.

Or watching people critique singers. Seen some singing teachers or professional singers get amazed at Ronnie James Dio. They freak out as he has no formal training but hits all of the notes perfectly and everything is clear.

Thats my jam bro. Loved Dru Hill especially. The whole Boyz II Men, Aliyah, Janet, K-Ci, Jodeci vibe had me. Pretty hard not to be swept away by R&B and Hip Hop in the 90s with a splash of Grunge depending on what crowd you were in. I'm stuck in that decade judging by my Spotify.

As for homegrown R&B and Hip Hop stuff it was the ones you named and maybe Bic, Moana, OMC, DLT, Dam Native, Sisters Underground, Moizna, Double J and Twice the T, Annie Crummer, Herbs, Che Fu, DJ Jam and MC Slam, Ardijah, AKA Brown... a few maybe from the late 80s...

Classic rock dave

Here’s a little story, back in 1983 I used to trade live tapes and demos of hard rock band with pen pals in the US. I had a friend that asked me to help out on a fanzine he was going to start. That fanzine was Metal Forces and I contributed up to issue 14. Interviewing and reviewing albums. We all had copies of Metallica demo on tape. In fact my friend Bernard had a small box of demos that lars sent him which Lars hand wrote on the cassette label. When he sold some years later he was told they where fake as they weren’t shrink wrapped!!! Missed out there sucker. Couple of years later my wife friend became Lars first wife. They turned up to a New Year’s Eve party at our friends Trevor’s 1 bed flat in Wimbledon. Unfortunately Lars was such a arrogant prick at the time. Growing up in London as a teenager in the late 70s I got to see all the best bands, Queen in 77, AC/DC with Bon, Iron Maiden before they signed to EMI, with Paul on vocals. The wife and I saw GNR in a small club that hold about 300, they hadn’t released Appetite yet. I sat next to Lemmy from Motörhead at a ZZ Top concert at Hammersmith Odeon and didn’t say one word to him.

Yup, never thought I'd see the day that I watch videos of people watching videos (like the South Park episode from probably a decade ago now 😅 ), but got pulled down the rabbit hole in recent years, as you say. I quite like the ones with professional singers or musicians as they give a new take on songs in terms of how the music is produced from both performance and production POV that you wouldn't know from a "oh that sounds cool" listen.

Also really like Rick Beato who breaks down songs with the individual parts of the songs (via master tracks that he gets access to) as opposed to just 'reacting'.

Yeah, I quite like Rick Beato. He's had videos taken down as it sounds too close to the real thing.

Another one I like is "Professor of Rock" I think its called. Goes over facts about a song/album. If you are deep into a band it can get a bit "yeah whatever".

A music forum I'm on listed the Contrarians. Which sent me down a rabbit hole of music podcasts and discussions. Those were interesting as it's various guys ranking albums or discussions on albums that aren't popular in an artist's catalogue but they deem underrated.

Been loving watching samples and how they are manipulated into beats. Another rabbit hole...
