Anybody watching this? Great initiative from the NZRL and glad its being televised...
I watched one a couple of weeks ago, central district v south island, seems like our normal u20s lots of mistakes and no much defence.... lol
But maybe it's just me getting old.

That was Round 1. Its Round 3 and the standard has definately picked up.

Central have Charlie Gubb as a trainer.

South Island had a really good game last weekend. Some genuine talent in that team. Their ball skills are head and shoulders better than any team I've seen in the comp...

Does Wellington not even have a team? jeez they've fallen off
Sadly the game in Wellington is dying. From what my mate has been telling me there is a lot of infighting amongst clubs and the WRL is a complete shambles. They have allowed the game to fall apart and players have left in droves. Sadly the biggest casualty has been the junior base...

Northland taking competition favourites Auckland White to task. Still early but great to see...

Some talent on display in the Akarana vs Wellington game, Khalan Clyde in the Warriors system looks good but standout has been Wellington’s back rower turned centre Pharrell Gray.

Waikato half Jardyn Watene (Dallin Watene-Zelezniak’s younger cousin) carved the Akarana defence last week playing off the back foot most of the match. They had him listed as someone else on the Sky coverage for some reason.

Fullback Blair Ale, come through the HBHS 1st XV factory, is a kid with real pedigree, his family all really talented, big bro Jake played 7s for Samoa.

I love the Nyman kid from Scorpions. Always smallest guy on the field, but goes hard and competes for everything.

Really high standard for such young guys.

Jacob Nyman is a competitive kid and just backs himself - both on and off the field. He played in the age-group sides with Tanner Stowers-Smith and got promoted to Premiers for the Halswell Hornets last year (or maybe the year before) as a 18/19 yo, where he absolutely shone playing against Linwood (who are a top side in the Canterbury RL comp who always boast quite a few big bodies in their side). Don't know if he has had any opportunities outside of NZRL/local comps though (e.g., in any NRL development systems).

Yeah I’ve seen a fair bit of the Stowers-Smith, Tafua, Lowry, Nyman crew over the last couple rep seasons.

Poor Nyman strikes me as the kind of kid that scouts would unfairly strike a line through his name straight away saying “he’s too small”.

What do u think of cooper te hau?

He is a solid player, but probably a little less dynamic than Tanner Stowers-Smith. They were both playing yawnion and league whilst at school (at St Thomas and St Bedes respectively). Cooper has a big ticker, is strong and works hard, but I think that perhaps his time playing yawnion has had a bigger impact on his league career (from memory Cooper was playing prop, so more training time would have been in set piece).
What are your thoughts on him?

Idk- haven’t seen him play since he was a kid but I have a lot of respect for his old man who would fit that description u just gave of cooper perfectly.
Seems to be a bit bigger than his dad though and I heard he’s got a bit more footy in him.
His uncle on his mums side was a mad player too.
Just talking to someone last time I was home they said the same as u that tss is a bit more explosive but not to put a line through copper- reckons he could be a bit of a slow burn.

Fair enough. I know his parents quite well, and agree that Cooper is almost a carbon copy of his dad (except Cooper is a bit taller and hasn't quite got the same level of controlled aggression as his dad had).
Epic - yeah, I think if Cooper set his mind to it, he could quickly get to where Tanner is at. Would be stoked for him if he could join the next tranche of Warriors juniors - he was 18th man for the NZRL Secondary Schools side last year and almost cracked the NZ Maori 18s in yawnion. It may be that he's reached that point in his young career (he would have finished up at high school last year) where he needs to commit to one code to take that next step?
