Same team, same venue and same day of the week but the stakes are much bigger when the Vodafone Warriors take on Penrith in Sunday’s Intrust Super Premiership week one finals clash at Mount Smart Stadium (1.35pm kick-off).

It’s the first of three matches at the park with the Stacey Jones-coached side the only one of the club’s three teams to make it through to the play-offs this season.

Jones took the side to a top four finish last year only to exit the finals after losses to the Mounties and Canterbury Bankstown.

This time the Vodafone Warriors ended up just outside the top four but their fifth place finish rewarded them with a first-up home final against the eighth-placed Panthers.

The two sides face off for the second time in a week after Penrith won 36-24 last Sunday to sneak into the playoffs and now the Panthers make the trip back to Auckland for a contest of greater significance.

Jones welcomes back experienced prop James Gavet after being on NRL duty the last two weeks but he loses Bunty Afoa, who produced a herculean effort last week when he was on the field for 73 minutes, carrying the ball nine times for 90 metres and making an astonishing 47 tackles.

Also back in the squad is big interchange forward Pat Sipley who was ruled out last week after being injured in the warm-up.

Included on the bench is Vodafone Junior Warriors centre Junior Pauga, who scored two tries and kicked three goals in the NYC side’s 24-24 draw with Wests Tigers last Sunday.

Vodafone Warriors coach Stacey Jones has been able to call on 12 players with NRL experience for Sunday’s Intrust Super Premiership week two finals clash against the Newtown Jets at Pepper Stadium in Penrith (6.35pm kick-off local time; 8.35pm NZT).

With the NRL season over, wing Ken Maumalo and hooker Nathaniel Roache return to the ISP line-up as the Vodafone Warriors make their bid to reach week three of the competition’s playoffs for the first time since the then-Auckland Vulcans made the 2011 grand final (live coverage on SKY Sport 2 from 8.00pm on Sunday).

Also back in the side is Roache’s fellow 2016 NRL rookie Jazz Tevaga, who missed last Sunday’s 21-14 week one finals win over Penrith with injury.

Earlier in the season Maumalo scored nine tries in 10 ISP appearances before being promoted to the NRL side for 10 outings. In all he has 21 tries in 25 ISP games.

Roache has split his season between the club’s NRL, ISP and NYC teams while Tevaga has alternated between NRL and ISP duty.

Jones has shuffled his backline resources with Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, the only player to appear in every one of the team’s games this year, named to started at fullback after originally being selected in the centres last week. Matt Allwood, an 18-game NRL player, comes into the centres with veteran former Newcastle and Wigan centre George Carmont and Maumalo and Henare Wells on the wings.

The starting pack named comprises players who have all had NRL experience this year including another 2016 rookie in big front rower Toafofoa Sipley and James Gavet, the most experienced forward with 25 NRL appearances.

In two regular season matches against Newtown – Cronulla’s feeder club – the Vodafone Warriors have a win and a loss. They won 20-18 at Mount Smart Stadium in March but were trounced 38-6 at Henson Park in June.

While the Vodafone Warriors, fifth in the regular season, beat eighth-ranked Penrith last Sunday, the fourth-ranked Jets began their finals campaign with a 12-30 loss to minor premiers the Mounties on Saturday.

STAYING ALIVE: The seven-point victory sees the Warriors through to next week. Image: NZ Warriors Media.

The New Zealand Warriors have effectively closed out the game against the Penrith Panthers to stay alive in the Intrust Super Premiership NSW Finals race, defeating their opposition 21 points to 14.

The home side were always going to be helped by Ata Hingano's late inclusion, with Erin Clark shifting to hooker and Jazz Tevaga out of the side. For the Panthers, Moses Leota lined up at prop in the only significant change to their side.

It didn't take long for the Warriors' halves to make an impact, either, with Mason Lino orchestrating an overlap down the right-hand side. Zach Mackay still had plenty of work to do, however, and put in a clever grubber for Henare Wells to chase down. The try was unconverted by Lino.

Zach Dockar-Clay came up with an intercept and the visitors looked like hitting back soon after, but Raymond Lesoa was ruled to be held up by some desperate Warriors defence. In the ensuing set the locals made them pay, thanks to another piece of brilliance from Lino and Wells. The stocky halfback sent the ball high this time and Wells came up with a fantastic take to score his second. With Lino missing the conversion once again, the Warriors led 8-0.

Neither side were letting up for the next 10 minutes, but Zac Mackay was ruled to have knocked on in-goal in trying to score his side's first. The Panthers were similarly let off the hook moments later, but a Malakai Watene-Zelezniak fumble soon had them back on the defence. The right-hand side defence was tested this time and couldn't hold the Warriors out, with James Gavet producing a phenomenal run to score. The experienced prop carried Dockar-Clay into the in-goal to get his side's third, with Lino adding the extras for a 14-0 lead.

The Panthers were still looking dangerous when they had the ball, but errors were bringing them undone; errors to Dockar-Clay, Te Maire Martin and Leota let the Warriors off when in dangerous position for a completion rate of just 57%.

Half-time was approaching and the Panthers were once again on the attack - and this time they made the most of their chance. A torpedo from Martin produced a horror bounce for Wells, with Chris Aunese-Scanlan cleaing up the scraps to get his side on the board. Dockar-Clay converted and it was 14-6 as both sides went into the sheds.

After an error-riddled opening half, the second began in a similar fashion. A penalty soon put the Panthers back on the attack, however, and they managed to reduce the deficit. Some strong carries from Leota were followed up by a brilliant offload to send Antonio Pelesa crashing over in front of the sticks, converted for a 14-12 scoreline.

As the rain began to come down in Auckland, funnily enough, the errors appeared to dry up. Some bruising defence from the Panthers kept the Warriors in their own half and they began to take the ascendancy. When a penalty soon came in front of the posts, Dockar-Clay opted to take the two to even things up. He made no mistake and scores were locked at 14-14 heading into the final quarter.

Having averaged just 5.5 points in the second half of their last eight games, the Warriors were desperate to post more and regain the lead. With 13 minutes remaining, the home side was back on the attack and when the ball shifted right through Lino, he once again put his outside man in space. Matt Allwood got the ball and with some impressive footwork, beat three defenders to score. The try was converted and the Warriors held a six-point advantage.

Martin showed his blistering change of pace soon after to go close to setting up Mackay, but the Warriors defence held strong and they effectively built pressure down the other end of the field. The home side chose not to go for a decisive field goal on a number of occasions, but with just one minute remaining decided to add the extra point through Lino. The game finished at 21 points to 14, with the Warriors keeping their premiership hopes alive.

Warriors Not Worried By Second Half Lapses

NO KLOKING OFF: Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad praised his side's efforts to close out the game against the Panthers.

They managed to overcome a significant mental hurdle to reach Week 2 of the finals – now it’s time for the Warriors to go all the way.

When the Warriors marched down the Mt Smart Stadium tunnel with the Penrith Panthers in Round 25, they did so knowing that their fifth-place finish was already confirmed. The 80 minutes that followed were typical of a club not known for its consistency, with an early 12-point deficit turned into a 12-point lead and back into a 12-point deficit by full-time. It not only meant that the Warriors had continued their disastrous recent run of second half performances, but that they would come up against the same team at the same venue a week later.

In an Elimination Final yesterday, the home side were dominant early and looked to have booked a place in the Semi Finals, but tries either side of half-time for the Panthers brought them back to 14-all. As the rain began to poor, the Warriors were dangerously close to a repeat of the week before and were at risk of losing their heads – but this time, centre Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad said, the team managed to close out a deserved victory.

“We’ve had a lot of losses in the last few months, but there’s a lot of belief in this group and we just touched on it before the game,” Nicoll-Klokstad told NSWRL.com.au. “It sort of showed in that first half and we took it into the back end of that second half too.

“Last week they come over and they got us in that second half, so it was really good that we were able to close it up this time.”

Leading into yesterday’s final, the Warriors’ average of 5.5 points in the second half of their past eight games was not indicative of their ladder position. They only narrowly exceeded that with seven yesterday, but Nicoll-Klokstad believes the team will be better for it next week.

“Last week we got ourselves into a position that we wanted to be in and I think all the stuff that went wrong for us is stuff that we can work on ourselves,” the 21-year-old explained. “The fact that we were able to close out that game… at the beginning of the year we might not have been able to do that.

“Hopefully we can take that momentum into next week.”

It was a rare home final for the Warriors, but the team will not return to Mt Smart Stadium in 2016; they now face the task of taking down Newtown at Pepper Stadium for a place in the Preliminary Finals.

The Jets’ form has been indifferent of late, but few expected the 30-12 rout at the hands of Mounties on Saturday. Having demolished the Warriors 38-6 in the teams’ last meeting at Henson Park, however, Stacey Jones’ men will need to be on top of their game to sneak into the final four.

Just looking at those photos of Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, he's packed on a fair bit of muscle. anyone know what his preferred position is? Looks to have the build of a centre. I haven't seen him play much at all. Does he have a decent pass? What are his strong points?

* my post may be more suited to the player discussion thread. Apologies mods

Be real interesting to see how far Stacey can take this team in this comp...

If there is one thing you can say about his coaching, is that his players seem to respond well to it... If feel pretty sure that Stacey has that one thing that Cappy is lacking, as alluded to by Sam Rapira before he left.
