$450k half set to start season in reserve grade after Bulldogs’ failed bid to offload him early​

The Bulldogs have reportedly failed in their bid to offload Kyle Flanagan and will be forced to pay the 23-year-old almost $500,000 to play reserve grade this year.
Flanagan joined the Bulldogs last season on a three-year deal said to be worth $450,000-per-season after he was released early from his Roosters contract.
There’s been rumours circulating suggesting the Bulldogs also hoped to offload him early after a disappointing first season at the club, however News Corp reports their attempts have failed.

He has previously been linked to a return to the Sharks, where he made his NRL debut, and two Super League clubs were said to show some initial interest.
There was a belief that Bulldogs coach Trent Barrett could get the best out of Flanagan after being credited for the Panthers’ attack in 2020, but the young halfback failed to meet expectations.
Flanagan was dropped after Round 9 last season. He returned to the side in the Bulldogs’ Round 16 66-nil loss and then was dropped again the following week. He was then recalled for Round 20 only to be axed for a third time a week later.
Flanagan finished the season with six try-assists and eight linebreak assists — second and first in the side respectively overall despite only playing 13 games.

In 2020 they asked cooper Cronk to comment on Flanagan and he said he was going to be awesome and was right on track.

I have isaako listed in my bottom 5 players in the nrl
He hasn’t really landed any big headliners. I hope for dolphins sake that the junior players he signed are fizzers.

From a warriors recruitment perspective we got 4 Kents for next year. All of them are gambles but what can you do when you live in a shoe?
All of Shaun Johnson Taylor Arthurs and pene have big upsides but could also not pan out at all

Odds are two will go great guns with one below average and one a complete bust.

As I have posted a number of times I am not on the this year is the warriors year bus until we off load nikorima
If he plays any games as a starter we won’t make the 8 at all is my prediction.

I am watching Sharks closely. If they keep acquiring just one or two more they will need to let our man go to create space in the thirty.

The NRL looks set to lose one of their biggest names to rugby union.

It can be revealed two-time NRL premiership Storm prop and New Zealand international Nelson Asofa-Solomona is set to join the Japanese League One competition ahead of the 2023 season.

It is understood he will join Japanese powerhouse Panasonic Wild Knights, who are mentored by former Wallabies coach Robbie Deans.

But as the 2m, 130kg giant prepares to say sayonara to rugby league, Rugby Australia are keeping a close eye on his movements and could yet offer him a short-term deal.

Asofa-Solomona, 25, has essentially been frozen out of the Storm because he is unvaccinated and by law any player in Victoria must be vaccinated.

The Storm have made numerous attempts to reach out to the prop over the past few months to try and resolve the situation but to no avail.

“I’m very hopeful ‘NAS’ will come back,” Storm captain Jesse Bromwich said last month.

“He’s a powerful man and a big part of our team.

“A lot of us boys care deeply for him and I’ve tried to reach out to him, but I didn’t get anything back.

“I know he’s got his beliefs around vaccination and it’s up to him, but we really want him to come back, so hopefully the matter resolves itself soon.”

Japan however has no such mandates in society and therefore is the perfect haven for someone who does not want to be vaccinated.

‘It’s not mandated here. We just have really strict protocols in place,” said one Wallaby, who is currently playing in the League One competition.

Asofa-Solomona, who was at his father’s funeral on Thursday, was a star in New Zealand rugby as a teenager.

The Wellington College forward can play at No.8 and in the second-row and was one of New Zealand’s most sought after schoolboy talents before joining the Storm.

Rugby Australia were asked whether they were interested in signing the wrecking-ball forward, who was in the top half-a-dozen second-rowers in the NRL.

I wonder if there’s an opportunity for some sneaky manoeuvring with the Taumalolo and NAS contracts.
Let’s say both teams stand firm and it looks like they aren’t able to train or play this year.

We have extra money in the cap this year - do we hedge our bets and approach one of them and give them a reduced contract for the next 3 years (NAS 450k a year for example) knowing we’re unlikely to get anything out of them this year, banking on the world getting back to normal by Feb/March 2023 and having them for 2023 and 2024.
