If Lino stays at the Warriors... how would he go at hooker?

He has some initial speed off the mark, elusive, great passing and kicking game, (not sure about his tackling in the middle) but would have more game time, especially if Luke is gone

I entertained the idea of Lino to hooker a few years ago but can't say I do anymore tbh.

One thing that's hard to notice is that passing from dummy-half is very different to passing from first receiver (off the ground and what-not) and training someone to do that could be considered a waste of time (I remember a game where Lino jumped into dummy half for a bit and passed flat or forward most of the time). Kicking from dummy-half would be the same, halves are used to having a fair bit of time and space to kick with whereas hookers don't have that luxury.

The other thing is that even if he developed the skills it might be too big an ask for him to move out of his comfort zone. The NRL's a tough enough comp when you're playing in your best position, imagine having to learn a completely new position on the go.

The biggest issue for me though is defending in the middle of the park. Lino's not a great defender at the best of times, if he got put in the middle and had to make lots of tackles against the props and locks of the game I couldn't see it going too well.

He has the ticker and guts, he is just a small body. I have to say though that if he misses a tackle he does put his body on the line and at least slows them down. Otherwise he would be a great hooker, especially with his kicking game.

If Luke does go, Kata to come on for Roache after 25 and off after H2 15mins.

Beale to Ctr for Kata with Big Ken, pace and power on the edge.

Out there for sure but Katas low passing from Hooker does exist - we saw it in two trials and it was above average.

He’d need a lift in fitness but a whole off season to refresh the hooker skills would be his to take advantage of.

He tries hard but I honestly can't see him doing any good against the big boys in the middle. Even Roache has had his defensive deficiencies in FG and he's got more experience in the position.

Have you seen him play dummy half though? He was pretty bad when he slotted in there a year or two ago.

I'd much rather see us sign another fringe hooker for cheap and keeping Lino where he is. He's still the third best half in our squad.

Lino has held his own and stepped up when chosen in the team after injuries have forced it.. this would be a way for him to be involved week by week with the team and also be a back up half if needed ??? Just a thought!

Unless we have a replacement in mind, losing Lino would be a major step backwards for the squad.
I don't see any of the suggested replacements being organisers, and to me that's been the problem with the ISP Team when Lino's not in there.

If we lose Lino I’d like to see us go after Daniel Mortimer as a direct replacement, plenty of experience and can play 5/8/, HB and Hooker more than adequately as a back up. Leigh Centurion (Mortimers previous club) have released him as well as a few others after giving up hope of not playing Super League in 2019. The club has also confirmed that Mortimer is returning to Aussie in the hope of picking up an Nrl contract so he’s back and he’ll be on the look out

If Luke goes I’d be seriously considering using the cash to spend on Matt Parcell. Always played well while in the nrl and has been playing some stellar footy in SL, will be the last season of his 3 year contract in 2019 but am sure I read he wants to return to the nrl should someone come knocking, still only young and has racked up plenty of experience and is, in my opinion, a quality dummy half who might be able to be picked up on the cheaper side of things as far as Quality is concerned

Parcell was mentioned earlier in the thread too. It was very strange to see him sign ESL so young when he had 1st grade written all over him.

Could only see that happening if he goes to Japan. Even regular all blacks struggle to get anywhere near $1 Mill a season.

Can't see it IMO.

I don't even know what position he would play to be honest... I doubt he would be good enough for super rugby, his skill set doesn't translate to any union position at all.

He'd be lucky to get half the money he is on now because the All Black brand pulls the big paydays in international rugby.

Wait are you talking about resigning him as a hooker or a half? I'm talking about using him as a hooker

Be a shame if we did lose Lino but he probly thinks he needs to roll the dice because he wont get much better at the Warriors. If he thinks he can improve his worth in the Aussie systems then good on him. He has the skills to be a good organising half with none of the dramas of some of our other lazy entitled juniors of the past

I think the timing is right for us to start blooding a rookie half, rather than using Lino as a hole plugger in the halves. We have some top talent coming through, who are doing the apprenticeship in NSW cup and currently don’t see a path into NRL. Tevita Harris and Perham will be hungry for a chance, these guys are potentially the future with Green and Shaun Johnson possibly leaving the club over the next 2 seasons. With Roger Tuivasa-Sheck locked in at 1, can see Perham moving to 6.

However, if Luke goes, they might actually not release Lino. Too much experience to lose in the middle of the park, especially with Roaches injury history.
