I reckon a christchurch team would do us proud. Those farm boys know hard work and wouldnt slack off. Canterbury's magic ingredient. No big city distractions or ego's. Just good old fashion clean living. Up at 5am to milk the cow, in bed by 8.....

Haha I'm not sure if this is a piss take or not.
Reminds me of traveling up to the nth island to play footy when I was younger. 80% of our team would be Polynesian and the crowds would still be yelling out "smash those white c*#ts".

There are no cows or cowboys in Townsville. That is a longstanding joke.

Hey Zeuss, they are a rugby town and can't even fill the Riccarton Showgrounds for Super Rugby.

Dr Zeuss pls.

Look at it this way. Rugby is waning over there. Even with a champion outfit the public have lost interest.

So now is the time to capitalise. Start a new league team just like they did with the Storm in Melbourne. No one thought league would succeed in an auusies rules mad place. But they have.

I reckon fill the Cantab tesm with ex-Aussies. Sell them the clean living family life. They will come if marketed right. The Jaffas will want to play for Cantab and drop the Warriors.

Curious locals will watch. Farm boys like Brad Thorn who want a taste of something more physical will want to play....... you expand your mind and build from there...

Genius or just plain crazy?

A bit of both these days. Thank you Warriors.

Have you ever been to Christchurch? They all have one eye in the middle of there foreheads with a patch over it.
Maybe not in Townsville but there actually is quite a few coyboys in nth qld.
Bull riding is big up there.

Addington showgrounds...

The Cowboys got their name because Kerry Bousted got so frustrated with the slack way they went about everything. Nothing to do with cows and horses.

They can't fill the Addington Showgrounds either;):D

Well I've never heard that one and I did live in nth Queensland for a couple of years ( the bull riding tournaments are actually a great day out btw) but I'll take your word for it.
If I was choosing a name for them it would've been the townsville amputees ( never seen so many people missing a limb- not sure if that's due to the army base or the crocodiles...)

Some of my best mates are from Christchurch, salt of the earth they are...but they are still as one eyed as anything.
I just could not see league taking off there in sufficient numbers to justify an NRL team.

Good yarn but I think he may be giving himself a bit too much credit there...

Original logo of the cowboys
The Cowboys name and team colours were decided by public competition in 1994. One of the major difficulties that faced the club in their early years was attracting followers from the more established Queensland-based Winfield Cup side, the Brisbane Broncos.[citation needed]This was exacerbated by an initial lack of onfield success and stability. In their first two seasons, the Cowboys had eight different captains.

Being from the opposite end of the country (far north) - we rarely had the biggest pack. Our forwards often got smashed. We had a few exceptional players (3 x NZ U18s that I recall - 1 a year older than me - standoff - trialled with St George, offered a contract - turned it down to stay at home; 2 in my year group at school - 1 our halfback who was an absolute gun but trained like he never cared - all the natural talent in the world - I hate him (but he's a great guy); 1 - my centre partner - great on attack - couldn't tackle to save himself). plus a few others who ended up playing regional reps (Northland) or played Bartercard for the Northern Storm.

What I found was it wasn't so much the size of the pack, or how big someone was (in any position) - it was the heart of the player. And the reluctance of any player to let someone else down. No - we never won the title - but in 96 we made the national quarters where we got obliterated by the eventual champs (De La Salle).

It's always been about the size of the fight in the dog...
