The irony of calling him a cheat.

It's a classic Storm tactic, they get tackled then jump up and a couple of metres forwards to fuck with the ruck and markers, trying to draw a penalty for interference which is only interference because they're pushing into the markers.

Works for them a lot, but the ref clearly recognises it here and says "you shortened it" which is good officiating.

Especially when Smith does this.. Clear jumping motion from Smith to earn his side a penalty and get a Sharks player put in the bin.

Fifita only gets a fine for that tackle. So they deem it worthy of a sin bin but not worthy of a suspension. MRC and match officials haven’t been on the same page for years and it’s really not a good look.

His tackle wasn’t even worthy of a penalty. But if you think it’s a dangerous tackle then charge for that.

That's because the video review officials have a directive not to judge severity or mitigating factors. They simply rule on whether an offence is occured and they apply a penalty based on rigid criteria. In this case they saw Fifita make a tackle and that Smith ended up in a dangerous position. An argument could have been made that Smith put himself in that position, but the video review officials are encouraged to reach a decision ASAP.

It's a ridiculous system that was poorly thought out and it all comes off the back of one incident involving Drew Hutchinson where the Roosters had to cop it sweet. The same team that tried to victim blame Korbin Sims for getting his jaw broken by Dylan Napa who went looking for a big hit, got it horribly wrong and got what he deserved.
