Chanel Harris-Tavita and SOS are just different skill sets.
They are literally different pieces on the chess board.
Chanel Harris-Tavita is the best defensive back in the Warriors, that alone makes him a must have player in any Warriors team.
He has a running game, and I rate it pretty highly it is well above average for a half.
His passing game is good.
His read of the game though, which includes his ability to communicate what he sees to the players around him is yet to develop.
That last qualifier severely limits his use as number seven.
But right as of now, what really holds him back is the lack of a boot. Yes he can kick the ball but it is far from being a strength.
The Warrirors need a top seven, they have only had two tactical Sevens that rate in the top three during their time in the NRL, Stacey Jones and Maloney.
Shaun Johnson was something else, he was a freak that sits in his own category, a Stand off thast was so talented that he could get away with being a passable seven because he was so dangerous he changed the way the Warriors played rugby league.
You just give a player like
Johnson the ball and hope he runs. if he has good forwards game over.
SOS is a ball playing half, he has as kicking game, and he is an organiser. How do we know? the Warriors structure showed profound change the instant he was introduced into the line up.
The Kicking game suddenly appeared.
I think we need to step back and look at the big picture.
The Warriors need to buy an organising half, they need to move on from SOS and his defensive frailties, and find someone that kicks and passes and talks. Someone like Reynolds would be ideal.
They either buy an old dog like Benji or Reynolds or Maloney or they get the next Reece Walsh young halfback (this is more ideal than an old guy) and they build up
Chanel Harris-Tavita at six and Walsh at one.
Or....they turn
Chanel Harris-Tavita into Jamie lyon. Defensive and running passing Rugby league outside back God.
Your point about
Chanel Harris-Tavita suiting the change of tactics to the recent second phase and giving the ball some air is a good one.
However if we really want to be great, we need a player that can play the boring structures and deliver on both grinding phases and attacking phases in one game. A half back in other words.
