Rugby league: Todd Payten lays down challenge for young Warriors star

The New Zealand Warriors put up a fight against the Penrith Panthers on Friday night, pushing the league-leaders close in a tight 18-12 defeat. After the game, Warriors head coach Todd Payten pointed out one player who has the potential to go far, if he makes one key improvement.

Warriors halfback Chanel Harris-Tavita has received a challenge from interim head coach Todd Payten - get comfortable, and get mean.

Since taking the reins in the No 7 jersey on a full-time basis ahead of last weekend's match against the Manly Sea Eagles, the 21-year-old has settled in nicely. Bringing a youthful enthusiasm to the game, Harris-Tavita has been assisting on tries and linebreaks, and taking the line on.

But his enthusiasm for the game is clear on the defensive side of the ball too. Harris-Tavita goes looking for work on defence – as he showed by lining up Penrith Panthers forward Liam Martin late in the Warriors' 18-12 loss to the Panthers on Friday night.

Now, with the Warriors eyeing a surprise bid for the playoffs, Harris-Tavita's influence on the side shapes as an important part of the plan.

"I think Chanel's played a couple of decent games. What I like about him is he actually goes after the game. You saw in that tackle late in the game when things were pretty tightly contested, he's actually tried to turn it for the team," Payten said.

"He's going to develop into a good first-grader. His direction and talk are probably the things that he needs to, not get better, but it's a week by week thing. It's about him feeling confident and comfortable with his role within the team.

"He needs to feel comfortable telling players around him where to go and what to do. If he has to swear and be mean and whatever it takes, that's what he's got to get to - like a good halfback."

Harris-Tavita was promoted to the starting side as a long-term option after the departure of Blake Green, who left to join the Newcastle Knights in round 13 after being told he was unwanted by the Warriors beyond the 2020 season earlier in the year.

With Green left a wealth of experience and, importantly, the Warriors' lead playmaker. Through 12 rounds, Green led the Warriors with six try assists and was usually tasked with getting the kick away on the last play.

While that duty has since fallen onto the shoulders of five-eighth Kodi Nikorima, Harris-Tavita has shown a willingness to take on that pressure – with a pinpoint cross-field kick landing in the hands of Roger Tuivasa-Sheck for the Warriors' first try against the Panthers.

It was one of just two Warriors tries in a tight contest against the top team in the competition. Despite the Panthers having the majority of the ball and territory, only six points separated the sides in a telling performance.

"I'm proud of the effort, but really disappointed that we lost," Payten said. "We played tough; I've been asking for that for weeks. I thought we'd been building a few times in the past.

"We played a team at the top of the ladder; they had 160 more plays with the ball, 12 more sets, nine repeat sets, a lopsided penalty count, but we kept turning up and that's what the game's about."

The Warriors have also secured the loan signing of Manly outside back Albert Hopoate. The son of John and younger brother of Will, the 19-year-old is one of the brightest talents in league, though had an outstanding junior career halted by two serious knee injuries.

Great advice and I think Chanel has the good to go far.

In regards to the above comments though, you have to earn the respect and trust from your team mates before you can lead them, which only comes with experience.

It’s great he’s getting an extended run in the one position to really build the partnerships with those around him. Green leaving was the best for the future of the club.

For years I have been asking for a team that tries out on the field and one that has the respect of the opposition and the league community
I thought that it has been building for a few weeks and we got that Friday night and I gave them an A. Even Roache had to shut up because he couldn't knock the Warriors
A great effort
Thanks guys

I must say Roache has backed off the Warriors this year and overall seems to be a lot more reasoned in his approach.

In past years I have thought he shouldn’t even be calling games he was so bad but with time I think he’s maturing into a better and more well rounded commentator.

I’m even starting to appreciate some of his comments when they are from an analytical point of view rather than continuous negativity.

Just to remind you two that there is a difference between Steve Roach and Nathaniel Roache.

One plays for the Warriors and always seems injured. The other is a boofhead who I wish would injure his throat so I wouldn’t have to hear his commentary.

Roache has been really supportive of the warriors this year.....On another note I also really enjoy listening to him on the Matty John's podcast, especially retelling stories of Olsen Filipaina...although their pronunciation of his surname made me cringe.

Just wanted to post this over from the NRL general thread. I think its important they get these Captains challenges ironed out fast.

"Just on that Peta Hiku call, the same thin happened in the Raiders game, where the Raider player caused a foul by grabbing an arm, which cannot be reviewed, the ball went along the ground, ref blows the whistle for a opp Review. It goes up and they totally flaffed it up not knowing what to do, in the end they gave it to the Raiders as they were about to take possesion and run the ball out despite having just grabbed a playing arm which should have been penalised but can only be on field not when sent up for review. Well its the same as Hiku, there was nobody in front of him so possession should have gone to the warriors. "

Also for Wheel of Fortune

Is that an O? For Olsen...... or was it Owesome.....

I heard and O that day. ha.

Legend of the game, one of the few kiwis to have played in Aus in the 70s. Would love to know if any played in the 60s? Was just discussing this on PM yesterday.

Yes Roache is strangely supportive, hes been a meat head critic in the past.

One of the better defensive efforts from the Warriors in a while. Nice to have a nail biter of a game. I just wonder if Jennings (I think) would have scored the try off the pass from Hiku if Stephen Crichton had decided to follow the rules and get onside instead of intercepting the pass.

Just looked at the tackle Katoa got a 1 match ban for......are you serious! I know he had a couple of points from a previous game but it didn’t even go on report!

Can you post a vid?
Not sure how to post a vid of the "dangerous contact" but I had to check nrl.com to see exactly when it happened as I couldn't recall anything dangerous during the entire game other than what Luai did.

It says it happened in the 49th minute so I checked out the match replay and had to watch the 49th minute twice to even find the tackle. You'd see that type of tackle about 15-20 times in every match so the ruling is baffling.

How many times does that happen in a game. I know they didn't want people cannon balling in but that didn't seem too bad.

That one a few weeks ago the commentators were saying looked bad, they changed their mind on the replay.
