Hard to see the Roosters getting beaten, can play both the expansive game and the down and dirty game. Raiders have had a great season. Reckon if they're to win they need to throw caution to the wind.

A real shame Sticky coaches the Raiders otherwise id be behind them 100%, although i do hope they win moreso than the Rorters. Love a good underdog a d would love to see Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad get a ring.

Question - would you prefer it an afternoon or late night GF? I find these late night games a real pain in the arse (largely cause i have a 6mo child messing with sleep patterns) but would much prefer an afternoon game like yesteryear. The AFL GF is afternoon and i believe it creates a great full day atmosphere.

I'm for the late afternoon kick off (aussie time around 4 so about 6pm here), i start early and no way i can watch the grand final and besides by the time it actually starts is never the advertised time. Gutted the storm are out, hoping the raiders will win but for the life of me i don't understand how the roosters get under the cap Tedesco/Manu/Mitchell/Tupou/Cronk/Cordner to name a few must all be on pretty big dollars as they all rep players as well.

I remember going to the 2007 grand final in Sydney. Melbourne absolutely smashed Manly. It was a 7.30pm start from memory (Australia Time).

It was a really long day. They had 2 or 3 reserve grade final games on before the grand final. Game 1 started around 1pm.
Not sure what games they have on before the final this year? But if the grand final starts in the afternoon, then the other games would also have to start earlier.

It does suck having the grand final and state of origin games starting around 10pm NZ time. I also prefer the late afternoon starts. Usually makes for a higher scoring game also.

The forward packs and back lines look pretty even to me. The halves are where the Roosters have an advantage. Also the Roosters have a stronger bench. Hope Raiders can win but they will have to play nearly the perfect game.

30 years ago nobody rated the Raiders. They were actually pretty shite until mid year and made the finals in last spot. In the final Balmain were all over them like a bloody rash. At half time things were not looking good for them.

In the NZ studio, considering it was the first time a GF had been shown live here, they assembled a panel of nobodys including this guy as the token Aussie:

They switched back to the SFS and got the comment of the season from Peter Sterling, who had retired with injury during the season. He said "When we played them this year they just never stopped coming at us, they just didn't stop"

So that was it, they didn't stop and wore Balmain down.

They won't stop on Sunday either, and I have to admit those Poms look pretty tough, they won't stop either. They have nothing to lose, the Roosters do. All they have to do is keep taking it to them. Who knows what will happen?

Go Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, he is a great kid.

Sticky was almost in tears a few years ago after some of the floggings they copped, he was all about the boys hurting in the sheds. He gets a bit theatrical about it but I remember having some respect for the way he managed his squad while simultaneously lamenting their lack of rep players in the media, that's a tough gig. Bellamy's the only other coach you'll see taking the game as personally as Ricky does, a Bellamy/Stuart GF would have been good drama but oh well, up the Raiders.

Sterling retired in 1992. The only reason I know that piece of useless information is in 1992 my English teacher recommended to my mother I need to read more. Her suggestion was to get me a subscription to RLW. My first copy was the edition he retired and they had a poem someone wrote about him, or he wrote about playing league. I can remember useless shit like that like I'm Rain Main but can't recall details on a page I've just read.

That game was nuts, sure not the highest scoring but still end to end with momentum swings. I rented it years ago and still thought it was a stunning game, refreshing not seeing such an emphasis on completion rates and seeing the ball movement.

A lot has also been written about Warren Ryan pulling Steve Roach and Paul Sironen off. What are your thoughts on that? there wasn't interchange back then. I think his thinking was to get fresh legs to close the game out, he was then stuck with them on the bench if I have the rules correct.

Need more Origin players. He used to throw a lot of tantrums when he first moved to coach the Raiders. He needs to make the Raiders job work after his reasoning for moving on from the Eels due to family. If the Raiders don't work out there aren't many other NRL jobs in Canberra.

Stuart was one of my favourite players back in the day. Loved his long passes and how Daley would run off them setting up players.

As a coach I haven't been the biggest fan. At the Roosters he had a star studded roster but would still carry on. We have the conversion clock cause of his whining as the Warriors wound the clock down. He gets credit for getting the Sharks to the preliminary final in 2008 although every one forgets the Warriors being in the opposite game. Think his Sharks and Eels stints were pretty terrible.

Have to admit though seeing some of the clips with him with the players or miked up he comes across a lot better. He may have mellowed from the guy that told Brent Finch he lost him a Grand Final. I still hating his whining at the refs or NRL at press conferences but as a player he sticks up for them in the media.

He has done a good job building the Raiders the last few years. The last few years they lost a lot of close games near full time. This team is a bit more mentally tough.

This game with the heavy favourite/star studded side against a team that hasn't been for a while having a good year does come across a bit like other years.

The Eels on a roll before meeting the Storm in 2009. Or the Warriors vs the Grand Final experienced Manly.

The key thing for the Raiders is to not let the occasion or a few bad calls or mistakes get them down. Stuart has Grand Final experience sure it's not the best record but still its experience. If they can start like last week they can make the Roosters work for it.

Remember when he got wasted after the World Cup and went off at the ref in the hotel, that was probably his lowest point. He does seem to have mellowed a bit in his old age, maybe he had to give up getting on the piss with the boys every night for his mental health.

Sterling retired in 1992.
You have won a chance to the key to the Trainspotters Club shithouse. ;) All you have to do is tell me how many games he played in 1990 and 1991, and why he was commentating in the latter half of 1989.:happy:

Like Brent Todd carrying the ball up in his 20 and throwing a pass to nobody:oops:...yes things have changed.

Ryan made a mistake. He didn't consider extra time. They were up on Canberra and finishing strongly...but like Sterling said...Canberra didn't stop coming. BTW I think Craig Bellamy played in that game as well.
