General NRL 2018 Round 4 - General Discussion

Watching 9s 100% Footy show tonight they’re going to town on the referees, had to laugh when they said the serial offenders for inside the 10 and goal line penalties were finally being pinged, the “likes of the Roosters, the storm and the WARRIORS?!?!”

Big old Gussy Gould talking us up! Back handed compliment, saying we've wasted 25yrs but insinuated we could be at the start of a dynasty if we keep this together

Do not miss him...[/QUOTE aye.
And certainly don't miss that stupid step/skip thing he does - its the dumbest ever and he doesn't go anywhere - thank god he doesn't do that for the Warriors anymore aye - wot the heck were the tigers thinking......................................................... ;);)

Watching Big League Wrap on Fox.
That’s the show to watch if you want a good assessment of the round without the cringey attempts at comedy.
Also, watching Yvonne talk footy isn’t too bad either.
I didn't watch much of it but I saw the controversy corner bit about the Eels. Everyone was debating about their halves or their forwards being at fault. Roach the forwards need to aim up to let the halves work, the other argument was the halves guiding them around the field. Rothfield was all about off field gossip and being offered pictures from parties etc. I used to read the Telegraph a lot but got sick of all the negativity and gossip. Now seeing him on these shows all his articles criticizing the salary cap etc seem silly as he doesn't know any of the rules or how things work. Kent has to keep correcting him on the cap, TPA's, signing rules etc.

Thought Ennis was good covering the Raiders issues.

Would like to give a big wrap to Benji. I was at the Tigers, Eels game yesterday and he absolutely nailed it.
If he keeps this form up how could the Kiwis not select him.
The guys completely re invented the way he plays
He seems to have come of age late in his career. He does a good job guiding the side around the field or winding down the clock with kicks to touch. Interesting to see how Reynolds eventually fits in as I was expecting Benji to have a similar role to what he had at the Broncos filling in.

Most of the league scribes and media guys I’m not really bothered by..but Rothfield is REALLY hard to like.

He doesnt seem to understand the issue with the number of penalties at the moment, his answer is the refs should go back to before let players get away with being offside because the number of penalties is ruining the game. How about the players obey the rules?

Interesting hearing Gus Gould talking on his show last night where he said about the Warriors and I’m paraphrasing.

“This is the Warriors side we’ve always feared because they have got themselves fit, they are concentrating on the type of football they want to play, they’re committed to the full 80 minutes, they’ve got consistent intensity across the game and now week to week. This is what we feared the Warriors could be, now if this goes on to be the culture of their club for the next 10 years they could produce anything over there, absolutely anything”.

“What they’ve done is just waste the last 25 years in the competition because they’ve never really got their head around what needed to be done, they have now, I don’t know who’s responsible for it, I don’t know who’s responsible for their game plans or what they’re doing but this is totally different to anything we’ve seen before”.

The 25 years wasted thing is a bit of an exaggeration as 2001-2003 as things turned around. We were also going alright 2006-2011 to the point he was willing to poach out coach. He was also saying similar things around 2010-2011 that it would be the Broncos and Warriors dominating the next few years.

We are only 4-0 and like the Dragons last year there is often a team that goes well starting the season but get caught up or go on a lean streak.

I'd rather be in our position than the Eels or Raiders which is where we are usually but still along way to go.

But at least we are getting talked about now in the post round analysis instead of a bad ref call the opposition got etc.

We’ve certainly had good times, that was Gould going for dramatic effect I believe.

Whether or not what we’re seeing now differs from the past only time will tell, can we be consistently good every week even if we lose games? ... that’s probably the litmus test for us because even in those years you identified where we were strong there were some thumping score lines against us which shows that inconsistency we’ve struggled with since ‘95.

Am I wrong in thinking that’s what all us fans identified very early on, that if the Warriors ever got the formula right they’d be a force to be reckoned with in the Nrl?

I think Gould just touched on something we’ve all known for a long time.

A pretty damning video on NRL 360 last night of the Eels against the Tigers showing about 4 players hiding down the blind side leaving their defensive line short. Tigers spread the ball as you would when the opposition don't number up properly. The Tigers make a break and the Eels just jog back.

Also saw somewhere that Arthur has admitted people writing them off for the finals are probably right.

so what has changed with them? Is it all down to the return of the Hayne plane?

A good question surely it can't be down to just one player who wasn't playing that game. The Titans were going well until he arrived, mind you haven't turned around since he left.

They also played a video of them with the ball with Moses yelling at the tackled player to get up. That was to highlight a disconnect with the halves. Not sure if that was the best example of that but Moses was one of the players jogging when the Tigers made the break. But Norman doesn't seem to be doing as much as the last few years so there could be something in that.

Like a lot of people I was expecting them to make the 8. The games I have seen they have been starved of the ball early on but it's for all sorts of different reasons, penalties or turn overs.

That wasn't even the worst of it. Check out Moses giving Kenny Edwards a spray. Either Moses has some balls, or is just plain stupid. I wouldn't think Kenny would take that shit laying down:

They've got some real big problems over there, and I don't know if Arthur can get them out of it.

I saw him do that during the game not to sure if it was the same instance or not but I remember watching it thinking that's a nice way to talk to your team mate. Edwards wasn't really that slow getting up either as he had two tacklers on him. Was also thinking during the game Moses would be frustrated seeing as how his old side has turned things around under Cleary.

Also mentioned on NRL 360 last night about possible Raiders recruits for the halves than they mentioned Corey Norman and Brad Arthur are butting heads. The Eels games I have watched Norman is barely noticeable compared to the last few years where he has been a big threat.
