General NRL 2018 Round 24 - General Discussion

This is my first post in this forum. Don`t know if this is the correct place to put it. Warriors are in the finals finally. Week one of the finals, they play the Panthers or the Dragons (as the table stands now). Is that right? Which team do you think would be safer for the Warriors to play given that there will be nerves in the game?

Probably Dragons but it doesn't actually matter.

We just need to be fully focused and committed to playing our game plan with intensity from the first whistle to the last.

Could also adopt the All Blacks approach of lifting our intensity in the last 5 minutes of the first half and first 5 minutes of the second half even though fatigue is hitting hard.

By the way - welcome to the rollercoaster.

Coming up against the Sharks might be interesting though in terms of mindset. The Sharks only just won the last game and it was through some bad calls from the ref. The Warriors might come into the game all fired up with a point to prove?

Are the dates confirmed for 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th placed teams to play ?
The NRL don’t release the finals draw until after the last regular season game has been played. However, here’s the draw the used last year for the finals:
C43394CA 0209 4221 A8D7 66A59FA571AF
So, if the ladder stays as it is now, and if the NRL follow the same schedule, here’s the games in chronological order:
Friday 7th Sept. (1st qualifying final)
2. Roosters vs. 3. Rabbitohs
Winner goes straight to Week Three - preliminary final, loser plays winner of elimination final in Week Two.

Saturday 8th Sept. (2nd qualifying final)
1. Storm vs. 4. Sharks
Winner goes straight to Week Three - preliminary final, loser plays winner of elimination final in Week Two.

Saturday 8th Sept. (1st elimination final)
6. Dragons vs. 7. Broncos
Winner plays loser of Qualifying Final in second week, loser eliminated

Saturday 9th Sept. (2nd elimination final)
5. Panthers vs. 8. Warriors
Winner plays loser of Qualifying Final in second week, loser eliminated

Correct. There's a rule that all finals games have to be at the biggest venue available. So ANZ for all Sydney teams, Suncorp for the Broncos and Eden Park for us.

did this rule come about in the 10 years or so we had a semi at home, i remember mt smart pumping when we hammered the sombrero wearing roosters, 2008 i think

even the nrl should know how shit eden park is and host it at mt smart !

They smacked the raiders there once wearing those electro blue jeresys, probably the high point of the tomkins-hurrell-cappy era.

yes i remember this game. only because i ruptured my achillies playing for the mighty mangere east hawks that afternoon. instead of heading to the hospital, i got a mate to drop me off home, had a few beers, watched the boys get the W then asked my brother inlaw to take me to middlemore.

my wife was at her rugby game, i rung her to tell her what happened and she wasnt impressed. haha. oh well, we got the W that day. thats all that mattered at the time.

Yeah, it's fairly recent. Probably last 3-5 years? I vaguely recall Manly supporters being upset about having to use ANZ and not Brooky.

On the plus side - it greatly diminishes the home field advantage the Panthers / Dragons would enjoy

They must have used different rules last season, during the finals only two games were at ANZ - the Eels (for their home ground) and the Grand Final. All the other four finals games in Sydney were held at Allianz. Melbourne had their two "home" finals games at AAMI.

I think there’s another couple of things they factor in, for example I heard there was no AFL in Melbourne on one of the days so storm (if home final) would play then, and Allianz games wouldn’t be played same day as the swans game etc.

I'd like to know for sure.

I'd like to say it sounded like fake news.

Unfortunately I believe it’s true, there’s criteria on stadium capacity, Queensland teams play at Suncorp, Sydney (incl Newcastle and Canberra) either ANZ or Allianz, Melbourne at AAMI, Warriors at Eden Park- think it’s only been last couple of seasons with the NRL wanting to maximise gate takings.

Sounded like rubbish because we haven't had to play a final for so dam long.

Doesn’t Eden Park have to agree that they want a game there?

Nrl can’t simply dictate where a finals will be played

I get it if it’s already a stadium they use for their nrl games but I don’t think they have any say for Eden Park....

welcome aboard, nice to see you here. The team to avoid in my opinion would have to be the sharks. Somehow they always get a lot of the rub of the green and could see the warriors out early. Broncos are big game players and will rise to the occasion, but this is the most experienced finals team the warriors have ever had and i think has the measure of them. The Panthers will get Maloney back, but he alone should be manageable. And the Dragons well, they would have to be the easy beats

But we should feel bad about losing to the Titans and the baby Panthers.

i feel bad about losing to all of those teams , thats the difference between top 4 and top 8

but in reality, stuff it, we are top 8 now and anyone in the 8 has a chance of winning the comp

and lets be honest, thats the only thing that will shut these aussies up, we win the whole damm thing !!!

The stadium capacity thing only comes into play come preliminary finals time.

Except Sydney teams who play at Allianz and ANZ right through, as we know.

Canberra and Cowboys for example, can play all their home finals games at home except a home prelim.

I’m unsure about that Eden Park thing. I reckon if we finish 5th or 6th we’d play at Mt Smart. Eden Park would surely only be for a home preliminary final...

Makes most sense to me. The rah-rahs would be desperate to have a game at Eden Park for the financial income, but what about neighbourhood permission? That would be real fun. Everyone would have to be in and seated by 6pm, stay calm and quiet during the game and go straight home to bed afterwards, And by the way, no typical leaguie swearing or bad-mouthing the referee either.

How are they gonna sort that in under a week? Chaos would rein.
