I'm going to go against the grain here, but I'm not a fan of the whole 'never change a winning side' mentality. To me it is retrospective. I appreciate that blokes played well and with pride in Perth, but you have to be one step ahead of the game in the NRL.

I'm not saying I am unhappy with the team named, I just hope there is not the rigid old-school approach of tradition - be innovative.

Benefits of the same side:

  • Allow longer for combinations to be effective
  • Reward for effort
  • Copy and paste doesn't take as long allowing more time for the process

Negatives of the same side:

  • Not rewarding effort in ISP/training paddock
  • Guys get too comfortable in their spots/ competition not generated = (potentially) urgency lacking, mistakes made.
  • Team naming lacks a horses for courses approach towards the opposition
  • Potentially a better player left on the sidelines in favour of an inferior one out of coach loyalty
  • Harder for the opposition to plan against

Personally I would not have Cook, but SK will have a better idea than us about where Lawson fits (Roache is such an enormous loss). Paasi needs to be playing FG, especially against his old mates. I still hope Vete is our future, but can understand him having an ISP run first. Maumalo and Kata played reasonably well, I hope it continues. Not a fan of waiting for a player to have a shocker you know is coming before they are benched. Maumalo and Kata are still THAT guy to me...you know it is coming. Actually you don't, but you get my drift. I am hopeful of eating a bit of humble pie at the end of the year.

I'm glad SK stripped the team back to the basics last year and that the club removed the passengers, they have a good foundation to build a much different team onto now.

What a great game in Perth, I can't wait for this week.
Good read as always.

In the mid to long term I agree with you about no protected species and rewarding people.

I just think in the immediate term that this club has been so low on confidence......so lacking in stability....that the players need to see some very basic achieving goals = reward and some IMEDIATE security.

I'd be quite happy to see people interchanged sooner rather than later...but not this week.

You can see we have an extended bench to publicly acknowledge to those waiting in the Wings....'we know you're ready too'.

I like that....it's good for us fans to have that transparency to talk about stuff.

Efifgy has been put to one side, cannot complain about the team, would of preferred Cook to have been replaced with Paasi...

For once in a long time I'm really excited to see if they can back the performance up....4am start for me but who cares!

The extended bench was a mandatory NRL rule bought in last year. Every team has to name 21, and noone outside of the 21 can play on the weekend. Think you even have to drop 2 off the bench 24 hours before the game aswell.

Probably something to do with inside knowledge on people making bets etc, and coaches playing silly buggers up until kickoff
When fans should have a right to know if they're going to the game wether a star is playing or not.

Here's hoping Lissornay gets his second try this week. That move was fucking beautiful to watch and absolutely shat on the defense by Bam timing his run perfectly to receive the ball outside the lead runner's inside shoulder or whatever the rule is.

Probably Paasi for Lisone, but Lawton hasn't done the hard yards of pre-season and has barely put his feet under the table. He'll get his chance though. Kata and Maumalo will start sweating on Beale and Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad soon enough. Healthy competition going on..

Thanks bro I missed that law change.

I am not sure what more you would want?

They busted their asses and won a game many thought was unwinnable.

I would never drop a guy from a winning side unless they had a shocker... surely contributing to a win is more important than killing it in training?

Just double checked the rule:

Players running a sweep play must not receive the ball inside the block runners inside shoulder...

My post was more about the proverb that is being bandied about rather than this team naming - never change a winning team. It was not in response to this week's team.

We saw Steven Kearney stick doggedly to the same line-up week in week out last year...I am hoping that he is not afraid to make changes just because we are winning, because that is a flawed approach imo.

You see champion teams from all sports across the globe that are successful because they stay ahead of the game and approach each game by its individual merits. Keep things the same in the NRL and you get worked out in no time.

I'm in no way saying that stability and reward is not good for our guys at the moment. At the same time they need to be kept hungry and focused. It will be interesting to see SK's approach this year.

For me clinical sides will pick at our weaknesses far better than Souths did. I'd happily change personnel in preparation for the opposition's strength and weaknesses regardless of whether a player had a good game previously.

Hopefully our edge defence has improved markedly in the off-season, but I am definitely not ready to count my chickens there despite the other fantastic gains we seem to have made.

Titans line-up for anyone interested

1. Michael Gordon
2. Anthony Don
3. Dale Copley
4. Konrad Hurrell
5. Phillip Sami
6. Kane Elgey
7. Ashley Taylor
8. Jai Arrow
9. Nathan Peats
10. Leilani Latu
11. Kevin Proctor
12. Ryan James
13. Bryce Cartwright
Interchange: 14. Mitch Rein 15. Max King 16. Will Matthews 17. Morgan Boyle 18. Keegan Hipgrave 19. Joe Greenwood 20. Jai Whitbread 21. Aj Brimson

Konnie was one of their best last week but still looked short of a trot, was blowing hard late at times so I think the plan to run at him is good as we know he will tire. Might not open him up until late in the halves but if we stick to it then the floodgates will open, let's see if that is part of the process.
