Roger Tuivasa-Sheck named to return in Townsville
Author Richard Becht & www.photosport.nz
Tue 12 June 2018, 03:02 PM

Captain Roger Tuivasa-Sheck is again in line to return from an ankle injury for the Vodafone Warriors’ 15th-round NRL encounter with the North Queensland Cowboys at 1300SMILES Stadium in Townsville on Friday (6.00pm kick-off local time; 8.00pm NZT).

While he was included when the side was originally named for last week’s clash against Manly, the 25-year-old was subsequently ruled out with the versatile Peta Hiku again filling the fullback’s position.

However, Vodafone Warriors head coach Stephen Kearney said Tuivasa-Sheck’s hopes of playing this week were more encouraging after today’s field session.

"He has a few more boxes he needs to tick but he's certainly better than he was last week," he said.

Kearney has listed the same starting line-up initially chosen for the Manly match. Hiku would again be in line to switch to fullback with Gerard Beale coming into the centres should Tuivasa-Sheck be forced to miss the contest on Friday night.

The extended interchange bench includes one change with centre Anthony Gelling added as a replacement for front rower Sam Lisone.

The Vodafone Warriors remain in fourth spot on 20 points heading into the 15th round, level on points with South Sydney and two behind St George Illawarra and Penrith.

The 9-4 start to the season, the second best in the club’s history, contrasts with a grim first half of the campaign for the Cowboys.

They started the year as one of the title favourites after being beaten in the 2017 grand final but have won just four times in 14 matches so far, including only two from seven in Townsville.

Yet their record and the fact they sit 14th in the competition is of no consequence to the Vodafone Warriors as they contemplate one of their most difficult away assignments.

The overall record between the two clubs is dead even – 19 wins a piece – but it is tilted heavily in the Cowboys’ favour at 1300SMILES Stadium (12-5). Of the last 12 matches there since 2002, the Vodafone Warriors have won just once, 20-16 in 2014.

Since starting 2018 with five straight wins, they have had four in their last eight outings with wins following losses.

Wing David Fusitua marked his 70th career appearance last Saturday with a hat-trick to take him into an outright lead in this year’s NRL try-scoring stakes with 15 in 13 games. He now boasts 47 tries overall giving him a strike rate of a try every 1.48 games.

This year yet?

Think we will see Roger Tuivasa-Sheck out and Hiku at FB (and no kiwis game) and I think an argument can be made for no Luke in the kiwis.
Might mean we only lose Shaun Johnson and Tohu Harris for the kiwis test- considering how bad it could have been I could cop that

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck still in doubt despite being named for Warriors

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck ran freely at training on Tuesday.

Roger Tuivasa-Sheck will be on the plane when the Warriors depart for Townsville on Wednesday but he is yet to be given the all clear to play against the Cowboys on Friday.

The Warriors skipper missed last week's win over Manly in Christchurch due to an ankle injury.

The signs of a return looked promising at Tuesday's training session as Tuivasa-Sheck ran freely on a wet and windy day in Auckland.

But a final decision on whether he takes the field will not be made until after the captain's run on the eve of the match.

"He's got a couple of boxes to tick before we give him the okay, but he's better than he was last week," Warriors coach Stephen Kearney said.

"He needs to make sure he's 100 per cent convinced in his mind that he's close to 100 per cent and the medical team need to be convinced of that too.

"A day of travelling tomorrow and the captain's run in Townsville on Thursday should give us a pretty good idea."

Warriors: Roger Tuivasa-Sheck (c), David Fusitua, Peta Hiku, Solomone Kata, Ken Maumalo, Blake Green, Shaun Johnson, James Gavet, Issac Luke, Agnatius Paasi, Isaiah Papali'i, Tohu Harris, Adam Blair. Interchange: Karl Lawton, Chris Satae, Bunty Afoa, Simon Mannering, Gerard Beale, Mason Lino, Ligi Sao, Anthony Gelling

Boring.

Boring is good...great in fact.

They don't change winning sides this year and well they shouldnt, not unless that change is to accommodate a Veteran.

I wish Lawton would get on and cement a spot ahead of Jazz.

Most pleasing is the inclusion of Satae ahead of other options.

Still think we will win - Cowboys were my "other" team and its a shame they are what they are at the moment - apart from Taumalolo the forwards don't really worry me. Don't know what happened to Ethan Lowe, was one of their better forwards (and could kick) in years past but seems to have slipped down the rankings - Coen Hess hasn't been setting the world on fire either. Warriors by 8.

Confidence and returns from injury as well as Queenslanditis (getting old but still playing).

What is with the obsession for Lawton. He is rubbish. A hooker that cannot hit the chest of a forward/playmaker should learn another trade
Heck if you would like to see how good he is, replay the match of Warriors Vs Roosters. We got thumped 32-0

I believe even one of the games he played that bad that he got hooked and Jazz Tevaga was replaced for him
