I read a post from a Raiders fan that said they should kick for the sideline on the last against us, to negate a 7 tackle set, and to negate the kick return meters from the Warriors big and fast backs.

The Eels tried it.....originally Wayne Bennetts Knights tried it...

On paper it is a good idea....it robs Roger Tuivasa-Sheck Manu a Warrior center of a platform to get a roll on.

It never works any who......cause it slows the game down to a set peice where Warriors get ball against a reduced line up of players not tied up in the scrum.

It also tells the Warriors you are scared.

Best of all....kicking it out means the Warriors aren't having to defend try scoring attempts.

Not really convinced Sao brings anything from the bench. Would rather have seen Afoa rotated back in.

Yeah Ligi Sao is not really bending the line.
Need him to up his game and show more punch or the Raiders are going to push him backwards every time.

Boy I wish we had Mutts for this game, word is he's still 2 to 3 weeks away
They have a massive forward pack with Tapine starting and Dave Taylor off the bench

Hoping everything to date has been a dress rehearsal for these next 3 games, Raiders , Storm & Roosters
Either way Raiders game will be good value going into the Storms game.
Winning will be a bonus and a confidence booster heading to Melbourne.
The win will also sit us inside the 8 for the 2nd time in the same year! :p

Keep concentrating on completion rate and defence, the 2 biggies!
Get the spine working and take advantage of our set pieces
Johnson needs to go mental with his new found freedom
Luke's interchanging with Roache will test their big forwards and add variety from the ruck

I believe we'll show up for this one, I just hope we don't lose it if things don't initially go our way.
This game to provide us with a winning template either way moving forward.
Their wins coming from the Tigers, Eels and Titans
Loses to the Broncos, Sharkies and Cowboys so they are hardly a top 8 team "yet!"

We've had these games before but a good chance for the Warriors to show what we've got.

I'm really looking forward to this match - it's going to be a big test and one I think we will be up for.

The defensive effort against the Eels is the bare minimum for this clash - even that effort will probably not be enough to nab victory.

Huge game for Sol and Ken - How the hell are they going to limit Leilua and Rapana? That job really starts in the middle - if we can't find parity up the guts it will be a long afternoon.

And best of all, this huge Warriors forward pack will be grateful for the rest. :)

Just finished the rankings for this week, and it hit me how big a test this is match is going to be for us. A win against a well placed Canberra team on the basis of solid foundations will do so much for our players' headspace. Should we win, I think man management is going to be a key part of any success this year - without taking the piss, most of our players aren't used to consistent winning, and I'd hate to see it stuff things up with ego issues.

Speaking of....

I like Kearney's game plan of trying possession is king, time spent in the opposition half is the end game.

Its so simple, so obvious, yet it has escaped the Warriors in the past.

At its ugliest we saw a mindless one man hit up operation against the Dogs in their redzone.

The Warriors were tackle fodder for the Dogs defensive grinders.

Keiran Foran is a game changer in that type of thirty tackle marathon.

Kearney's plan wears down those big opposition forward packs.

The trade off with those big forwards is they are geared to play with an equitable possession share......our little forwards are used to clinging in there with less ball and territory.

Our lots physically fitter than they realise (an evolution of constantly playing without the ball by virtue of their own screw ups).

Eliminate that. Throw in Forans inspiration to get them using that extra gas in a positive way (Scoring trys, running in numbers) and we at some point....should run these bog packs off the park.

If the Dragons can do it to us for twenty years.....we can do it to the big boys.....we got the spine to tactically keep us on top of theirs. We got the spine that understands Kearney's thinking.....and can actually do something about those 'processes'

Don't worry. Even if we win I'll still post vids of all the little fails from the game.

There's bound to be some awesome footy lessons in their mistakes.

The best two players of the day will get nothing but praise from me tho.:D

Completely agree with this post, that Eels game was over about 15 minutes into the second half when we started controlling possession and got a linebreak, on the next set for the Eels they kicked it near sideways into touch.

The converse also being, we are particularly bad at giving up tries on the last when teams run it.

There's one area where Kerney can make a huge gain for the team IMO. It's the kicking strategy.

Vs the Eels

Shaun Johnson - 12 kicks
Foran - 4 kicks
Luke - 2 Kicks

This weekend I'd like to see

Foran - 10 kicks
Shaun Johnson - 4 kicks
Luke - 4 kicks

Shaun Johnson has a great grubber and a massive high punt. But that's about all he can rely on to deliver a result.

Foz and Luke are way better at field position kicking and Foz is the boss at chip kicks.

All good in theory but...

They might have gone to Johnson predominantly on the last in the past, because he was their best player/biggest threat, the go to guy that can chose to kick it or run it.

Truth is, the right side is the only side they have that plays structure well.

The left with Kata and Ken is not so good at playing structure.

One thing Johnson has going for him is the space of the open side to work his kicks and the majority of the team to chase those kicks.

We could be better at it.

If you want Foran Kicking more, you swap sides of the field.

I feel so dirty putting $$$ on the raiders this weekend. But I honestly cant see us walking away with 2 points.

To me, this game is all about protecting our for/against record.

We're getting there. Just not there yet.

Get yourself some free money and $$$ the raiders.
I've put 3,000 bookie pesos on the Raiders - so given my luck at picking winners, an upset with the Warriors taking the 2 points is very likely to happen. You can all thank me latter!!!!

And I don't want Luke kicking more than once or twice.

Shaun Johnson is the go to player for kicks. You just need Foran and Luke to take a bit of pressure off him and create doubt in the opposition.

Luke and Foran will give him more space. Space = Time = Better Quality decisions and results
Johnsons got a great in goal kick.

We enjoy a lot of repeat sets off that.

Foran balances that with a great kick chase pair up with Mannering....Simon and Keiran are loving it.

Luke's a guy that should be getting the ball on that odd bizzare occasion it has ended with Hoffman as an emergency kick.

It ain't broke.

It will get better.

The confidence lift if we win this game will be massive. We have a decent build up to the Storm game on ANZAC day but it is still a tough game. But that is followed up by a 5 day turn around for the Roosters game which gets down to 4 with the travel back to NZ or even 3 if you set aside a day for recovery.

A loss could be bad for their head space. But usually the first loss should have a rebound or motivation factor for the following game.

It was good to hear this game being talked up on NRL 360 as potentially the match of the round.

We have had a few wins in Canberra the last few years as we have broken the 10 year drought.

I've got another reason to hope for a win this weekend. Tomorrow is my 5 year wedding anniversary.

We were going to try and have a night out away from the kids. Haven't organised that but could still be a possibility at late notice. But with the big cyclone about to hit my family that is coming up for Easter decided to move the day they travel. So it is more likely my family will offer to look after the kids so we can go out to dinner, my wife will ask me and I'll be asking to skip it as the game is on or pushing that we get back by 7:30pm.

Romantic I know. So I'll either be sleeping on the couch in the dog box or after 14 years together she'll shake her head and understand.

Mind you as parents we usually go for dinner at 6pm when the restaurant opens and are back an hour or so later anyway.

So Go the Warriors.
