I wish I could say I was supremely confident about our season opener, but I really can't.

As other people have mentioned, alot of the young fit and exuberant knights players have had experience last season in the big league, not to mention typically the forwards lead the battle for territory and for the backs to do their thing, and if you are completely honest about the make up of both forward packs, who's has the most potency? I couldn't say that ours is going to be completely dominant over theirs which may lead to us having to make do with 2nd phase attacks alone.

Go the warriors:nailbiting:

I could be wrong but I think the reason Ken is so popular at wing is because he can slot into the same game plan as they use for Manu. Swapping those two players wouldn't lead to any significant game style changes.
That's exactly how I see it.
The Warriors are built on the Manu kick return, they trade off in all kinds of areas (tacklebot /tradesmen/cheaper. Forward solutions.....defensive patterns for his side of the field etc).

Kearney: No complacency from Warriors

Warriors coach Stephen Kearney is confident there will be no complacency from his side on Sunday, as the Auckland club kicks off their season against the lowly rated Newcastle Knights.

The Knights only tasted victory once last season and head into the first round on an 18 match losing streak.

The Novocastrians have also endured a difficult pre-season, with key play maker Jarrod Mullen provisionally suspended after returning a positive drug test for anabolic steroids.

Newcastle will be massive outsiders, but just the kind of banana skin that has proved perilous for the Warriors in the past.

"We need to make sure we get our game right and have a real respect for Newcastle and what they can do," said head coach Kearney. "We have set ourselves a certain expectation throughout the year on how we prepare and how we perform."

As if to remind his troops, Kearney indicated he was wary of the Knights, who beat the Raiders 44-0 in their final pre-season trial.

"They played really well [against Canberra]," said Kearney. "Knowing [coach] Nathan Brown, he made a conscious decision last year to blood young guys, to give young guys a run and they are 12 months better."

Senior prop Jacob Lillyman agreed the Warriors won't take anything for granted this weekend.

"The way things have gone around here we have no right to be complacent," said Lillyman. "We have a lot to prove and that starts out on the field on Sunday...that's where it happens."

After naming a 21-man squad on Tuesday, Kearney confirmed on Wednesday that young forward Isiah Papalii would be part of the 17 on Sunday.

"Isiah will definitely be making his debut," said Kearney. "He came on last week when Ryan [Hoffman] got injured and played the rest of the game. He is an impressive young man - I gave him the opportunity to get a job done and he did it really well."

Bodene Thompson remains the major question mark, but the 28-year-old back rower is confident he will be ready.

Thompson picked up a toe injury in December, which meant a modified training load in January and February.

It also precluded him from taking part in the Nines, and either of the Warriors trials against the Storm or the Titans.

"I probably could have played the last trial but I wanted to make sure I was right for round one," said Thompson. "I've got through heaps of contact last week and the week before and I'm getting through all the sessions now so it's sweet as. It's good to go."

If he plays, Thompson will be an important element on Sunday, in the youthful Warriors pack with Albert Vete, Sam Lisone, Charlie Gubb and Papalii in the mix.

^just further to the article, One News reiterated that Papalii will be making his debut and Bodene will feature on the bench, with Erin Clark dropping off.

Thank God on high SK is using reserve grade to get Manu ready.

I have to say one of the big pluses I gave Ivan was when he dumped Mr Wiki to the Vulcans to get back up to speed. The media, of course, treated it as "New Zealand rugby legend grossly insulted!" but I, and Rueben as I recall, totally understood the whys and wherefores of that move.

For Manu, I'm pleased about this on both the physical and mental level:
Physical: there's no point Manu having to put his hamstring* to the test at NRL level, blowing it completely and being out for several weeks, let him test things at ISP level, less intense etc etc (coming up against younger players and maybe players like himself coming back from injury/time off and don't want to blow it before NRL Time). Build things up.
Mental: You get confidence from success, so if Manu passes this weekend well it bodes well for next weekend and so on. And with Mr M Vatuvei, are last year's off-field issues behind him/in a state where he can deal with them and knows to and is able to ask for help as required?

And it makes me ask if one other - apart from promoting the U20s "superstars" to NRL and bypassing NSW Cup/ISP - issue is that we have had a habit of bringing players from the sick bay to the NRL without giving them ISP time first to get them back up to speed incrementally.

*insert whatever part of Manu's body isn't 100% :)

Well said.
There is something very wrong with a sports team that allows its 2nd tier side to be so disrespected in its function in the whole organism to the point where it is seen exclusively as a lower entity.

To me it has always been miss understood in NZ, by media, a generation of fans, and Warriors coaches.

There should be no shame or no lesser status in spending time in the 2nd tier side.

If the culture is right, players should welcome the opportunity to play and try to improve and win at any level.

Ideally Stars and wanna be stars mix it up and play together with a fiercely competitive healthy mutual respect between your feeder side and your top side.

The day a Manu or an Shaun Johnson are too good to use the reserves for individual gains and more importantly collective good club culture....is the day your club is lost in a business model of high flying salary big boys...being too good to mentor and pay respect to their up and coming youngers....

Kind of reminds me of when Joseph Parker who is pretty humble....thought he was too good to spar a fat guy Barry hooked him up with.

Andy Ruiz.

So the final lineup will be...

1. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck
2. David Fusitua
4. Solomone Kata
5. Ken Maumalo
6. Ata Hingano
7. Shaun Johnson
8. Albert Vete
9. Issac Luke
10. Charlie Gubb
11. Bunty Afoa
12. Ryan Hoffman
13. Simon Mannering

15. Jacob Lillyman
16. Sam Lisone
17. Isaiah Papalii
18. Bodene Thompson

Bodene to play a limited role. Which means Bunty to play long minutes. Think he topped 70 minutes in one of the Golden Point games last year so he should be good. Dont think he will play that long. Maybe 40-50 minutes. Bo coming on with 10-15 minutes left in the first half.

Isaiah Papalii will likely come on for Ryan Hoffman. Dont see him giving the props a spell but he will get time in the middle to act as one for a short stint.

Be interesting to see Issac Luke play the full 80. We're fucked if he gets knackered or injured but I didnt like the what if bench of Cappys so happy with the selections...

3 ?

Love Bully's (or Mooks) enthusiasm in terms of him playing 80 mins. Obviously he took his poor early season form to heart last season and is ready to prove the pundits wrong.

He did look gassed in the Titans trial just after half time - maybe from being his first hit out for the season, I don't know. But going along Mooks decision and thought process, if he's content on Bully going the full 80 then he must be ready for it.

Either that or Hoffman still isn't 100% - hence having Papali'i to give him a spell as Mt W said, with Bodene to spell Afoa. Therefore, it's a need to cover those spots which has forced the issue upon Bully - if so, I hope he's ready for it.
