Kearney is definitely taking a leaf out of Bennett's book here with a massive bench.

The NRL has instituted a new team-naming protocol this season which requires all clubs to list 21 players each Tuesday with the squad to be trimmed to 19, 24 hours before the game. The final playing 17 - confirmed an hour before kick-off - must come from the 19-man group.

That is the NRL and always has been. There are no easy games. This forward pack just needs confidence and direction. Hopefully they have it.

. Afoa and Clark get rewarded for good trial play. Gubb and Maumolo wouldn't be my first choices for a playoff game but they both try hard.

Never been big on Gubb but he's obviously impressed those that matter. Good on him.
Looking forward to Clark and Papalii cracking first grade, and I like the whole bench makeup actually.
Got a good feeling Roger Tuivasa-Sheck is ready to explode.

The final trial was meant to be our top side or close to it in terms of who is available. This side looks to be part reward for that effort.

If we are 1-17 I'd be reasonably happy. A couple of players outside the 17 give us a bit of competition if guys don't perform. Thompson hasn't had any football yet but should come into the 17 when fully fit. Ayshford had his moments last year but is stuck behind Fusitua who seemed to have come of age last year. Gavet will come in if any of the front rowers don't perform.

Most of the side was pretty easy to pick which is good. Looking for Vete to stamp some authority up front, third season in first grade. Afoa has a good chance to steal a spot or at least make things difficult for the coaching staff when Thompson is fully fit.

Clark performed in the final trial and Papali'i is an exciting talent to debut.

The articles have us playing at home (Mt Smart) for the 1st time since 2009. We played at Eden Park round 1 2012 am I right since then we have been away every round 1 since then? I might check that and if we have has any other club gone 4 years without playing round 1 at home?

Our opening round is traditionally poor. At home (finally), against last years wooden spooners who only won one game, we have been putting an emphasis on starting well. Time to deliver.

OK just like every other year I'm giving the coaching staff the benefit of the doubt that they have done their due diligence and picked who they think will get the job done, I mean they get paid to troll every clip, every training session, every team bonding session, to get it right, RIGHT!!!

Maumalo is dogshit ... I would have much preferred Blake on the wing. Dude is being crucified for three poor games at the end of last season after being largely excellent in 2016

Did anyone watch the storm trial and see how Gubb went? He did nothing in the titans trial and I thought gavet was outstanding, still in disbelief that Gubb is our starting prop, shocked
