Not disagreeing with your point though, Auckland, as well as Union nationally, both reliant on imports. So many talented schoolboys get picked up and moved to better union schools. The Crusaders have been reliant on imports for years as well (McCaw, Read, the Franks boys, Flynn, the list of Crusaders imports is pretty long!)... As have the Highlanders. To be fair, even the chiefs have had their fair share.

Its not that simple. Unions strength is its the number 1 sport in NZ.
It's in every high school in NZ and particularly strong in our traditional high performing schools which produce the majority of societies high performers and most powerful.
They get the private investment to run high performance programmes for kids from 14 years old.
League is a minority blue collar sport confined to a small geographical area supported by people who can give time but don't have the funds to support such programmes.
League is so far behind Union in this country it's ridiculous and unfair to compare the 2.
Until League gets a mass injection of private funds to set up programmes in schools nationwide our young players will not be ready for NRL.
Do we really expect one club to be responsible for developing all the youth on NZ, cause that's what's happening.
Where's Owen Glenn 's academy that he promised?

Warriors' coach Andrew McFadden is demanding an improved effort from his forwards when they take on a big and mobile Canterbury Bulldogs pack in Wellington tomorrow night.
The Warriors forwards were outplayed in last Saturday's 34-18 defeat to Manly and McFadden hinted that some of his players were fortunate to retain their spots for the Westpac Stadium clash.
After producing strong performances in their wins over the Knights and Roosters, no Warriors forward managed more than 100m against Manly.
Kiwis prop Ben Matulino (94m) and Queensland State of Origin prop Jacob Lillyman (81m) had particularly quiet outings.
With the Warriors wallowing in 13th spot on the NRL ladder after four losses in their first six games, McFadden is expecting a strong response against a Bulldogs side boasting a formidable rotation of big men featuring captain James Graham, back-rower Tony Williams, and bench forwards Sam Kasiano and David Klemmer.
"That's certainly an area we need to be better at this weekend," said McFadden.
"I didn't like what our forwards did so they're going to have to really pick up their game and I know they're very determined.
"There are some guys that need to bounce back really quickly. Fortunately for them they'd had some good performances leading up to that [loss to Manly] so you don't want to be too reactive.
"You need to allow them to make amends for their performance on the weekend so it's important that we do respond."
Improved ball security and more desperation on defence are also high on the Warriors' list of priorities, after they coughed up numerous unforced errors and defensive lapses against the Sea Eagles.
Captain Ryan Hoffman knows his side need to be prepared for the Bulldogs' relentless forward power and believes the visitors get stronger as games progress thanks to the heavy artillery on their bench.
"Canterbury's strength is in their pack," said Hoffman. "If you look at the blokes coming off the bench they're bigger than the blokes starting so you know after that first little onslaught that it's only going to get harder.
"It's a great challenge for us. We take a lot of pride in our pack and we're looking forward to the challenge.
"Ball security, discipline, all those areas. We know we're a good team and we can do some very good things when we get some consistency and cohesion and that's what we're looking to put forward."
McFadden agrees ball control has been their Achilles heel and is imploring his side to be more measured with their offloads and passing and show more desperation when defending their own line.
"That [poor ball control] is what has probably let us down," McFadden said.
"We just force our hand sometimes and we've just got to keep it tight again and stick at it because when we get that right balance we're a very difficult team to stop.
"We've just got to be a bit more desperate.
"There are parts of our game that are really good defensively. We looked less likely to be broken on the edges, that's been a strong point.
"But there's times when we just need to be more desperate to get to the football first. It's something we've spoken about."

It's just more lip service. And it makes no sense. Why would we need to make sure the forwards are fired up this week because the Dogs have a good pack? Shouldn't our forwards be fired up every week so that they might develop a reputation of being a good pack also? The Dogs pack doesn't pick and choose which games they want to stand up in, you know what you're gonna get from Graham, Tolman, Jackson etc week after week, even in their losses. It's just one facet of our pathetic game anyway, and with some nice stats to back it up you can see why they might focus on it. But in reality it's just another example of how the entire squad has no idea that your best effort has to be every week. Not just after a loss, not just after a couple of quiet games, it has to be every week. If Lillyman can make 20 runs against the Roosters then that should be his goal every week, the same way the good forwards in other sides do.
For far too long it has just been acceptable to produce a rubbish performance as long as you were okay the week before, or as long as you promise the next week will be better, and that seems to be the mentality from every player at the club. Even our coach sings to that tune "There are some guys that need to bounce back really quickly. Fortunately for them they'd had some good performances leading up to that [loss to Manly] so you don't want to be too reactive." Newsflash Cappy, they need to be at their best every week, last week's barnstorming performance means nothing if you're getting thrashed the following week.
And that extends to the entire side too, in particular to our chief playmaker. If Shaun Johnson scores a couple of tries and takes the line on in a game of touch football against the Roosters, that is absolutely no excuse to take the line on ZERO times against the Seagles. The first performance is what is expected of him every week, it doesn't give you a line of credit so you can go missing the following week. Can anyone imagine JT going missing every second week because he had a good game the week before? The dude has been doing the same thing consistently for weeks on end, year after year. If Shaun Johnson wants to be the highest paid player at the club and demand $1 mill in his next contract (which I have no doubts he will), then he needs to step up and start fucken controlling games rather than wafting in and out for periods every season when he decides he's interested. At present his career is stalling massively and he is no better than he was 3-4 years ago, and if it doesn't get any better then all he'll be remembered as is a poor man's Benji Marshall.

I think our club did ruin Konny, any other club he'd be a superstar, hes a centre not a bench forward. .... our coach has no clues when it comes to any selections, if we are honest we have NO punch anywhere on the park anymore... playing guys like Ayshford where Konny woukdve run over 3 players and scored.... All stars game he was brilliant. .... no one in the line up has that sort of destruction in them like Konny.

Not to sure why this club is always lacking motivation every few weeks but it does feel like all of a sudden we get a flat performance and we get told "Not sure why we didn't turn up". We have been hearing that for the last 20 years from different captains and coaches.
Now we have Bluey's round (6) where we are going to be firing on all cylinders and the round (22) where our season starts.
How about no one turns up to their home games until round 22 and see how that goes down. It would mean I'd keep up with my movie watching and less stress.

I'm not sure we ruined him. What we did do however was allow him to fail in taking that next step in becoming a professional athlete. His attitude issues had been documented at school boy rugby level, and the union development system let him go. What he found at the Warriors was a club that stood up and applauded the big runs but failed to properly address his other glaring deficiencies. And the NRL is a graveyard for outside backs who look great on the surface but have massive gaps in their game. Other sides find them out and play on their weaknesses. Konrad is no different here. He could have been a very good centre if he had worked very hard on his handling, his defence, his fitness....but he didn't, certainly not in his first couple of years, and what you see now is the result.

Interesting comment. The story I recall from Dean Bell was that they swooped on him when the ARU were a bit slow. Sounds a good story to me, Bell justifying himself again.
It is timely to remember John Hart's word when he left the club. "The NRL is the toughest rugby competition of any type in the world." The Warriors even with Cappy as coach would be number one in the ESL without any doubt. So it is not that our team are a bunch of dumbfucks, it is just they are not meeting the strict standards of the NRL, and maybe the club isn't either.
Having said that Fergie was one match away from the sack at Manchester United, I live in the hope that Cappoy is a Ferg in disguise and Saturday will be the day. All that it will take is for ALL the bloody forwards to turn up.

We did not ruin Konnie, he did it all himself. He was suspended twice for raising his knees and had to alter his running style or be banned from the game.
In his first year he was great and like you say he would run over 3 players and score, he cannot do that now with his changed running style and has been very average in his two first grade games this year.
When he arrived for training last year he was over weight and unmotivated. How did we cause that?
Konnie is a very likeable guy but his commitment to the game (considering his salary) went out the door last year and now he will have to work extremely hard to get back to the form he was in a few years ago.
