For example, the Panthers losing in golden point extra time on the weekend received exactly the same number of premiership points as South Sydney who gave up and were beaten 54 points to 4. The Warriors were beaten three weeks in a row in golden point. If they got one point for a draw in each of those games, they would be well entrenched inside the top eight.

I mean, when he puts it that way, I can't say I disagree ... golden point is just a game of kick and pray more often than not. 1/25 of them are actually exciting. The rest are just two exhausted teams trying to throw it over the posts.

That's why Cappy keeps fresh players on the bench - to save them for Golden Point - and then promptly forgets about them.

Said it often enough, if they want extra time, make it a full 10 minutes, ref it properly and most points at the end wins, if no one scores what's wrong with a draw anyway?

At least his argument against golden point is quite consistent. He usually brings up how say for the weekend the Panthers who lost in golden point walk away with the same amount of points from the game as Souths who lost by 50. But then when people bring up changing the way competition points are allocated he's against that as you can't change it as it has always been 0 for a loss, 1 for a draw and 2 for a win. So we are stuck with the traditional lets keep things like they were 30 years ago.

I would be more a fan of golden point if there was a change in the way the competition points were allocated so a loss in golden point is 1 point and the win 2. Then maybe a win in normal time is 3 points. Gould has shot that down as some games are worth more than others but sometimes it feels like he'd like us to go back to a Sydney comp with leather footballs.

The other thing dragging golden point down is the refs not blowing penalties. When it was first introduced there were a couple of games that were decided by a penalty. Some of the decisions were wrong and criticised, others were analyzed to death as a great game was decided by the referee. Since then it has been a free for all.

I realise Gus is saying that it's strange that the Panthers ended up with zero points after 90 minutes of effort, but if Shaun had scored in the last minute of regulation time instead, the Panthers would still have gotten zero points. The fact is, the winners get two points and the losers, whether they'd hung in for most of the game like the Panthers or get destroyed by 50 points, still get zero. There is no, you put in this much effort, so we'll give you a point anyway because you were a close loser.

That's actually one thing I don't like about the Super rugby scoring system, points for losing by a certain margin or less or for scoring a certain number of tries.

How about 1 point each for a draw and points differential remains the same?

A bit like it was back in my day....
