NRL 2015 - Rnd 20 - Warriors vs Manly Gameday Chatter
Mt Smart Stadium

NRLRd13WarriorsvSeaEaglesEtLjem ZgeVx

Time to get the beers in, put on your favourite jersey and if you're in town get to the park. Its game day.

Round 20 presents Manly with their final chance to rescue something from a disastrous season, while the Warriors will look to bounce back from a demoralising 24-0 loss to the Roosters which has them clinging to a spot in the top eight.

Hope had been starting to build at Brookvale Oval as Geoff Toovey's men strung together three wins out of four games through June and July, but they were all but ended after a 30-12 defeat to the Cowboys on Monday night.

Halfback Daly Cherry-Evans remains in real doubt after leaving the field with injury in Round 19, but at this stage the side is unchanged from last week.

The Warriors received a nasty reminder that they remain a bit off the pace of the Telstra Premiership's top teams last Sunday, being shut out 24-0 by the Roosters in an encounter where they never rarely fired a shot.

With young centre David Fusitua out with a knee injury coach Andrew McFadden has been forced to call on Glen Fisiiahi to play right wing. He becomes the 29th player used by the Warriors this year.

Prop Sam Lisone has been added to a five-man interchange in an otherwise unchanged side.

Watch out Warriors: Reckless use of the ball cost the Kiwi side any chance of beating the Roosters, as they repeatedly handed over the ball - making 11 errors and completing at 71 percent - which allowed their opponents to dominate the possession count. The Warriors sit tied with the Titans for the most errors in the competition and know that reducing their mistakes is directly linked to their chances of victory.

Forget where they sit on the ladder, the Sea Eagles might just be the most dangerous non top-eight team in the competition right now. With attacking weapons like Brett Stewart, Kieran Foran and Cherry-Evans back firing of late, Manly have shown they can score points with the best of them, averaging 23 points in their last five games.

Watch out Sea Eagles: Some of it can be put down to a torrid injury toll, but the Manly forwards really haven't delivered in 2015. As a team the Sea Eagles have run for less total run metres than any side bar the Titans, averaging 1,479 per match. This week they face a strong Warriors pack who have seldom been stood over this year, and matching them will be a crucial to the eventual outcome of the game.

The Warriors may sit on a less-than-terrifying 5-3 record at home this year, but at Mount Smart Stadium they have scored over 20 points in all but one of their games this year, averaging out at 26 per game. On the other side of the ball they have been solid on Auckland soil as well, averaging only 20 points against per match.

Key Match-Up: Tuimoala Lolohea v Steve Matai. A wily Kiwi veteran will aim to take down a youngster making all the right moves in his first full year of NRL footy. In his 10th season of first grade Matai has been a solid presence on Manly's left edge, running for over 100 metres in nine of his 13 games so far, with seven tries. On Saturday he marks up on the lethal Lolohea, who has a high involvement wherever he plays in the side, averaging 12 runs for 116 metres this year.

The History: Played 26; Sea Eagles 18, Warriors 8. A fantastic overall head-to-head record for Manly over the Warriors is also represented in the recent history, where they have won eight of the last 10 meetings. The Kiwi side have tasted victory against this week's rivals just four times since 2005.

What Are The Odds: So far punters haven’t been able to split these two, and Sportsbet have received money for both teams to win 1-12 in margin betting. Latest odds at Sportsbet.com.au

Did You Know: In 19 NRL games across two seasons Warriors' utility Lolohea has only ever scored at home. All eight of his four-pointers to date have come at Mount Smart Stadium, and he has recorded a double in each of his last two home games.

Match Officials: Referee: Grant Atkins. Assistant Referee: Gavin Reynolds. Touch Judges: Adam Reid and Shane Rehm. Video Referees: Ashley Klein and Steve Folkes.

Televised: Sky Sport – Live from 5.00pm NZT. Fox Sports - Live from 3.00pm AEST.

The Way We See It: At their best this year Manly have shown that they are capable of playing just as well as the Warriors, who sit six points and places above them on the ladder. But Monday's loss to the Cowboys put a stop to any late-season momentum which may have been building for the Sea Eagles, and a Warriors side at home, with redemption on their mind after last week, should be too much for them to handle. Warriors by eight.

Is Manu any hope of a return?

Just need the forwards to do their thing. I have no doubt that we will win if we crush their forwards, and there's really no reason we shouldn't.

Interesting stat.
Over the last 13 years the Warriors have been kept scoreless in only two matches until last Saturday.

On both those occasions the side to achieve a Warriors shut-out, went on to win the competition (Roosters 2002, Storm 2009).

Manly is one of the Warriors Bogey team
Played 24 Manly 16 Warriors 8

And after watching the Warriors live against the Roosters
last week, I was very disappointed.

Conversely, Manly where horrible against the Cowboys on Monday
at "fortress Brookvale".
However, with Jamie Lyons, Foran, Cherry Evans, & Stewart
The old enemy who beat The Warriors in the 2011 Grand Final 24 -10 are back .

Hate to say it, but I think Manly will win
BTW the Storm are playing the Dragons in Napier NZ after this game

Manly Warringah Sea Eagles 24 – 10 New Zealand Warriors
Tries:

Daly Cherry-Evans
Jamie Lyon
Brett Stewart
Glenn Stewart
Tries:
Tries Elijah Taylor
Manu Vatuvei

That is interesting... and it wouldn't surprise me in the least bit if that trend continued this year. Honestly, anyone but the Broncos.

If we had Ryan and Manu, I wouldn't hesitate to back us in this one... but this game just makes me nervous. Manly are nothing like the force they were in recent years, but knowing how mentally fragile our team can be at the best of times, I wonder if there might still be the subconscious aura about them that our boys might struggle to over come.

There are really only two things we MUST do to win this game: bash the shit out of them in the middle, and hold the ball. If we do those two things, we win - unfortunately, theres a very high chance that we may not do one, or even both, and if that happens this game becomes very dicey.

Desperately need this, in my opinion - need to set up a three win streak at home.

Game at Mt Smart infront of loyal Warriors fans. We were in top 4 prior to last game. Manly cellar dwellers for much of the season. Their club in turmoil with players and coaches told they arent required. Warriors with a chance to further cement a playoff spot.

Why am scared that we will lose this?

I believe you are mentally projecting past events onto today's game...:cigar:

"Should" win this one comfortably but when you look at Manlys squad there's still a heap of talent there.
Warriors need to bounce back after last week and make a statement

Manly have a slick looking backline that is for sure but we should roll them in the forwards. Doesn't mean we will though but I can see a Warriors 13+ victory today.

Ive gotta go with manly on this one, just doesnt feel right and plus its a bogey team. Unfortunately i think we will let this one slip through errors and rookie mistakes. manly by 6

Our boys are going to go out there and be themselves today. I can feel it...

Everything they were doing at the end of the roosters game will translate into a great effort at home v the seagulls...

Fish is going to score a runaway try. Shaun Johnson is going to carve up. Lolohea is going to run rings around Lion (well maybe not that one but he'll go well)...

Our forwards are going to dominant because our backs are going to look after them by holding the ball and completing our sets...

Tomkins man of the match...

Warriors 13+..
Roosters game was the loss we had to have..knocked all complacency out of us.Reinforced the need for us to have more options on attack. Forwards to front up after up after getting smashed.
Injuries are making it hard for us but that's something we have to adapt to. Manu and hurrell give us tremendous go forward early in the sets so their absence has to make the forwards step it up

PlayDaBall will really be upset if Manly change their team so much that Bunnies Glenn scores for the Beagles ;)

And not best pleased Elijah Taylor scored a try for the Warriors instead of playing for the club he's actually signed to :)

Oh I see what ya done there. Just posted the result from 2011.

Right.

Before that was in 2000 against the Dragons who didnt even the top 8. The only other time was against the Cowboys in 1999 who also didnt make the top 8. According that pattern the Roosters wont make the top 8...
