Cleary says believe
by: Aaron Lawton

Vodafone Warriors coach Ivan Cleary has called on his players to believe in themselves ahead of Monday night's clash with the Parramatta Eels in Sydney.

And despite heading into the game on the back of three consecutive losses, Cleary expects his side will cast aside its underdog tag if the self belief is evident amongst the players.

"We just want to make sure that we keep our self belief," he said.

" I think there's a bit of doubt from the outside so we have to make sure from the inside that we know what we are capable of.

"The fact is, in the last three games, we haven't played anywhere near as well as we can.

"If that's the case in this competition you won't win too often."

Still disappointed after last Sunday's loss to the Tigers by four-points, Cleary says there is plenty he can be positive about through 10 rounds.

"There were a lot of positives out of last week. There were a few negatives too," he added.

"I thought we played some good football when we had the ball and I thought every time we had it we look dangerous.

"We are just inviting other teams in at the moment."

The Eels, meanwhile, head into the contest on the back of a sizzling 44-14 win over the North Queensland Cowboys but Cleary insists his troops are a good chance of winning their first Monday Night Football match.

"They are a dangerous team. They have good players everywhere, very creative halves, big strong outside backs and good dummy-halves," said Cleary.

"But it's more about we do.

"If we can come up with a good performance then we are a good chance."

Mr Cleary i think you had it right last week we need more "flair", now mate your just clutching at short straws because your team is sliding. Changes to create more flair need to be made before the team really does lose self belief.

I'm still confident enough with the team knowing they are definitely more than capable of doing better then they have lately, make no bones about that. It is just a matter of really applying themselves harder. Getting their instincts back and backing one another.

Sliding? Some of the emotion posted about the Warriors lately suggests they won't win another game this season!

Firstly, this team is essentially the same as the team that was 4-2 with the only two losses being a close one against Team #1, and a bad performance against a hot team who are Team #2.

Secondly, the losses since then have been by 2, 6, and 4. Hardly shallackings. That to me says the Warriors aren't far off.

The Sharkies game was not good, because they keeled over against an inexperienced line up.

The Knights game was good for 65 minutes, and then they tried to 'survive'. Cleary identified several faults publically, and acted changing the halves in particular.

The Tigers game, a team who have won 4 in a row and are looking in hot form, the Warriors lost by 4 and lets not forget were dudded by the refereeing ayatollah Steve Clark. The sin binning was awful, the misses of Robbie Farrah's gridiron performance from dummy half was atrocious, a few key penalties against the Warriors were bewildering. Still they just about had them, without our best player also.

Personally, I think the Warriors will get the Eels this weekend. People have written the Warriors off as "inconsistent", if there's one thing the Warriors are it's consistent. Consistently close, either winning, or losing narrowly. They will not get towelled. Parramatta have a history of turning in dusty performances after good performances. I also think Jerome Ropati is about to truly announce himself as a top class five eighth, I genuinely believe last week's performance was a top shelf performance from him and once he sees adding in a bit more passing to his game to delay the attackers coming straight for him and hanging off that he's going to add a lot to this football team. He'll make the team nice and direct, and cause problems on the fringes of the ruck. This team is not far off, particularly if Ruben Wiki finds form. That's the alarming part for me, but if he does it will allow the likes of Swann to head a little wider of the ruck, even Lauaki, and look to play ball for the fullback and outside backs to get line breaks.

Repeating, we are not far off. Cleary is spot on. I'm anxious and nervous as hell about the three losses, but I have faith that not a lot has changed since we were 4 and 2, except the return of a five eighth who is in career best form.

I'm giving that full top marks. One of the best comments I've seen here this year.:whoo:

Pricey's return will help too! I hope to hell you're right Tooks - I do agree that the best time to play another team is after that they have had a big win.

Listen, mate, I know it's only May, but you've already got my vote for post of the year. It's nice to see some rational, balanced opinion on these boards amidst the maelstrom of emotional capitulation. :clap2:

I agree tooks. I've got a good feeling about the eels game. I haven't been impressed as much with the Eels as everyone else seems to be. The Eels have been talked up a bit for their win over the Cowboys, which wasn't THAT impressive considering the players missing from the Cowboys. I can see the Eels going in a bit cocky this monday.

More importantly, just about everyone is writing off the Warriors. That's usually the time they stand up and make their mark.

I hope so, I'd really like to think we can make our own stamp in this game.

In other news, Ivan Cleary has sabotaged all the teams iPod's and deleted all music and replaced all iPod music with R Kelly, I believe I can Fly. Michael Luck is said to be extremely upset that his collection of Bones Thugs N Harmony songs are gone and is planning to take it on Parramatta this week. Thuggish Ruggish Bone is highly rated amongst North Queenslanders.
