The guy has asked for everything he has got, and more. he is a farking idiot.
And Collins was an idiot and Muller was an idiot and Shearer was an idiot and Cunliffe was an idiot and that National guy that was a bully in school is an idiot. Now Browny is an idiot.

By contrast - the sun shone out of Ardern and Keys asses from the media reporting

I see a common theme here - either the media select who WE like; the average NZer is an idiot; or the good ones steer well clear of the scrutiny 🤷‍♂️

After Ardern's resignation there have been a few articles or political analysts saying how no caretake PM taking over from the person that resigned has won an election.

I don't put much in that stat.

2017 Labour were a mess before Little resigned. There was talk of the future of the party. English and National likely would of went on to win. Ardern coming in and the huge popularity swing to get them competitive isn't something we will see often or maybe again. That election was tight.

National have gained some momentum due to not chopping and changing leaders like they were and off the back of the governments mistakes. They still need to announce something resembling a policy. Some of the polls are indicating there will be a change of government but they are still tight and will likely depend on the minor parties. Just please not Winston.

I'm non-Maori (half my whanau are Maori) but I work for the majority of Iwi in my day-to-day job.

Most Maori I know (including friends from school, whanau and colleagues) want the following:
1. The Treaty settled fairly (and for most people to recognise that Maori were mis-treated and that the Crown did not hold to good faith with the treaty);
2. Equal opportunities and outcomes (including health outcomes);
3. Most do not want to be treated differently, but do want representation in matters that are important to them - how this occurs varies.

For our country to succeed, we need to be united. Getting there will be painful, but I think we are making process.

Interesting news article about the Nga Puhi settlement tonight. 2 major Waitangi Tribunal recommendations.
A few notes:

1 - I think everyone recognises Maori were treated unfairly and redress needs to be made, but can the treaty ever be settled fairly, if there are new claims of breaches when decision are made today? How can you ever get consensus when there is such a diverse group that may struggle to ever get equality while focused on the past. I cannot see closure for a very long time. The latest claim up North alleges 183 years of crown ‘mischief’ (so still ongoing)… in 50 years time I foresee grievances about decisions made today.

2 - sounds nice but impossible. Eg how do you get equal outcome if outcomes (for everyone not just Maori) is through individual choice - like smoking or favouring junk food or prioritisation of education, etc. How do you get equality if races have different characteristics (eg Maori are more family orientated; others can be more individualistic) without fundamentally changing that race?

3 - I think everyone wants that regardless of race

I guess that’s why self governance is something important to Maori so they can have more input in those outcomes.

Agree. But how does it work on practice? What does it look like in 50 years time. That’s the conversation that needs to be had.

The issue is that the world is capitalist and we have set up a complex web of systems to facilitate this - legal precedence’s, medical, property rights, moral and ethical standards, H and S standards, etc.

I don’t think we can ever have equality of outcome if Maori try to move away from what is essentially a worldwide best practice built up by taking the best from many cultures across many centuries. A different approach by Maori must result in different outcomes. Some ways will be better but many particularly financial will be worse. An example - iwi land with many shared ownership is incomparable with bank lending. Bridging this with govt subsidy is not a long term solution. Or is the solution that Maori like in substandard sheds with poorer health outcomes on their own areas like the Aborigines or native Americans?

If stats regress, which is a real possibility, it could open up even more divisiveness. Covering up the inefficiencies through subsidy equally creates divisiveness.

On a smaller scale, we embrace the differences between our own children who have different strengths and weaknesses. It can work. But it’s very complex on a National scale.

It has not worked well in Zimbabwe or South Africa. What is the vision for it here?

See one of the ideas new Police Minister Stuart Nash has to stop dairies being ram raided is to stop them selling cigarettes.

Seems there's a couple of things wrong with this idea:
Why reduce the income of small business owners?
Who will then sell cigarettes and what's to prevent them from being targeted?
Why not extend the concept? Bottle stores should stop selling alcohol.... Michael Hill should stop selling jewelry.... Noel Lemming should stop stocking phones and tv's. Ram raids stopped!!

Then Swarbrick has come out speaking of a "complete abdication of responsibility" and the "flood warning signs politicians ignored for years" yet she is one of the main advocates for intensive housing in Parliament. Intensive housing which has made the flooding in Mangere worse.

Without an increase in the stormwater infrastructure, pushing for more intensive housing which in turn leads impervious area leading to more capturing of water is also a "complete abdication of responsibility."

As the MP for Central Auckland, what has she achieved to prevent the flooding around Vic Park and the bottom of Parnell on the Strand? The flooding on Quay Street?

Here is a better idea. Reduce the price of cigarettes to below a dollar.
Here is another. Allow the shop owners to arm themselves.
