A thread to discuss Film media , Favorite Films , favorite Actors, Latest movie experiences.

Most recent Film watch : Oblivion.....if you like Sci Fi with a decent plot then this is one to see. Tom Cruise is one of my least favorite actors, so I nearly passed up on the chance to see it.

Cruise doesn't over act too much or spoil this with his trade mark Church of scientology manic grinning or American dental teeth baring.

Seriously good film for Sci Fi buffs on the big screen , too often in this CGI age , Sci Fi films may look the part but have comic book quality plots.

Not Oblivion, It twists and turns cleverly and Morgan Freedmans inclusion gives it some street cred.

People have complained about it being a bit slow in parts , I didn't get that feel from it at all , the pace is just right.....like some of the classics ( planet of the apes old school version etc ) you want some build up before the shocking revelation ( think statue of liberty scene at the end ) before getting hit with the truth inside the illusion.

Four and a half stars.

Favorite Actors : in no particular order because it's too hard to seperate.

Johnny Depp
Robert De Niro
Sean Penn
DiCaprio
Streep

Favorite Movies:
Alien Part 1
Bladerunner
Matrix 1

Ha, might have to give Oblivion a look then. I was intentionally avoiding it because Tom Cruise face puts me in a bad mood.

The last good film I watched was Kiss Kiss Bang Bang with Robert Downey Jr. Never heard of it before and it's old(2005) but I thought it was funny. Before that I watched Tucker and Dale vs Evil which was fucking hilarious and I can't believe I'd never heard of that either. Avoid the trailer if you can just because it shows like half the film

My favourite actor is Sean Bean at the moment. Englands answer to Chuck Norris.

Favourite actors:

Al Pacino - love his classic gangster films
Morgan Freeman - always seems to pick the right roles
Leonardo Di Caprio - his acting on Basketball Diaries was awesome
Matt Damon - like the roles he plays
Charlize Theron - besides a beautiful face and banging body the girl can act
Bruce Lee - Huge fan and have been for ages.

Favourite Movies:

Scarface - genuine classic IMO. Never get sick of watching it. All time favourite
Matrix 1 - only movie I have ever walked out of a movie theater from and brought a ticket to watch it again. Great original movie with mind blowing, cutting edge cinematography. That scene where Trinity jumps in the air and the cameras do a 180 pan on her absolutely blew my mind. The rest of the series were okay but had nothing on the first one. Favourite scene is The Lobby scene. Nice mix of fighting and BS. Lame now but was cutting edge at the time.

Stars Wars - Not so much the latest stuff but the first 3 should be on everyones list. The way that movie changed the whole special effects landscape is truly amazing. Spent the best part of my early childhood mesmerized by those movies, the characters, galxies, etc...
Bourne series - Love this genre of movies and like how Jason is a highly trained Bond meets McGyver with a pinch of Rambo. Some choice fight scenes in the first movie including the one with the pen. Never get bored watching these type of movies including Jason Strathams Driver series and even Taken types.
Shawshank Redemption - Just a great story thats been well played and shot. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman did a great job. Others along this line are Forrest Gump, Green Mile, etc...
Bad Boy Bubby - never laughed and been shocked so much before in all my life. Genuine WTF moments at every turn. It was anyway before modern day TV desensitized me with the likes of South Park and all.

Theres heaps of great movies. Others like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrells, Trainspotting, Hangover series, Silence of the Lambs, Pulp Fiction, Se7en, From Paris With Love, Fight Club are all just as good. Always been a 007 fan but more into the modern day half realistic movies then Pearce Brosnans far fetched movies. Gotta love Sean Connerys Bond movies too. You could go on forever with movies really...

thanks for the tip about oblivion...might check it out.
Me and the mrs went to it, really enjoyed it too.

Took the family to the midnight screening of Iron Man 3 for my youngest boy's birthday - bloody good value! Really damned funny in parts.
Olympus Has Fallen... not bad - a big dumb actioner with some ludicrous lapses in White House security leading to the president being taken hostage in his bunker. Enjoyable enough for what it was though.
The Croods - if you have kids, take them to this and watch it in 3D. Really impressive animation, and genuinely funny. If you don't have kids, go anyway.

I just watched a classic the other day. The Outsiders

We had to watch it at school (don't know why), but heard it mentioned the other day, so I had another look. I think its pretty timeless. It doesn't feel old and crappy like many other movies I used to love. And far out were there a lot of stars in it, and they were all so young.

C. Thomas Howell
Ralph Macchio
Matt Dillon
Patrick Swayze
Emilio Estevez
Rob Lowe
Tom Cruise

I'm not sure which came first for these guys, fame or this movie.

the most bizarre thing is that at that time c thomas howell was the star and everyone else was unknown and he ended up with arguably the worst career of them all

Same.
It's because there was so little Teen Literature / Media compared to today I'm guessing , and because S.E. Hinton was 16 and attending Junior High School when she wrote it.

We also had to watch American Pie like it was somehow relevant to our lives in some timeless way ( our English teacher insisted those Chev's and Fords cruising the streets were the Equivalent to Knights on Horseback )

Ahhh yup I see a tenuous link there....getting thinner as I spent Weekends walking half the distance of South Auckland ( no car ) to Visit the Grand parents four suburbs away......

Have you seen the new Conan? It has a tonne of Game of Thrones actors in it. It wasn't great imo.

I have heaps of favourite movies and actors. My favourite actor is Leonardo Di Caprio. Listing my favourite movies is tough but Braveheart, The Goodfellas, Blood Diamond and Cinderella Man are four off the top of my head that are near the top of my list.

Arnold is Racially / Culturally / physically / Steroidic ....Conan....he's descended from the Barbarian tribes of Europe, you can't ' cast ' that in a remake , shame they tried to go there at all.

Movies I like (a lot of foreign stuff):

The Raid - Kick ass Indonesian martial arts, intense as... watch it!
Gloomy Sunday - Czech war film
Amelie
Shawshank Redemption
Inglorious Basterds
Chinese martial arts epics - House of Flying Daggers, Hero...
Brotherhood of War - Korean war film
Life is beautiful - Italian war film, mixture of comedy and reality and it works!
Star Wars
Bad Taste
American Beauty
Sin City
Godfather
Kill Bill
Pan's Labrinth
Aliens
Kenny
The Insider

I could go on and on!

And TV wise if you haven't seen it, give Breaking Bad a watch - High School Teacher turned P Lab Technician. It is hardcore.

That was a program I was really looking forward to getting hooked on. But for some reason I always had something else to do and never got around to it. Its a program you can enjoy an episode without too much knowledge of the background story, but clearly it is a brilliant program and easy to get wrapped up in. I should really download all the series and watch it, but its just so daunting having to get through so many episodes.

Never seen the movie but absolutely loved the book. That and an old book called Run, Baby, Run!

Too bad they went there. Arnie Conan was the man. Watched one just last year though and it was shit hahaha but at the time I wanted to be him.

Great series. Downloaded the whole lot. Recommend the first series to anyone.

Never thought about that but I'd have probably put a weight on the bottom corners...
