Mitch Barnett

Sounding really strong that Mitch Barnett is coming to the Warriors next year on the knights forum. Apparently the recruitment boss approached him to stay but he said the moneys too good to turn down and he has a young family. The knights are after a back rower in return for a swap now but the Warriors are prepared to wait until next year for him to come over. Not sure where he fits in?

I would imagine as a straight swap for Aitken. Harris plays in the middle, and I think Katoa may make the move to the middle permanently. You could see Harris and Addin Fonua-Blake in the front row with Curran at 13, Barnett at 11 and Niukore at 12.

The bench would then be interesting as you would imagine Walker at 14, then a mix of Afoa, Pene, Jazz, Katoa, Ben Murdoch-Masila, Sironen

Barnett has a massive motor, a bit of skill. Plays all forward positions. We need another experienced forward to replace Lodge, I guess he could do it. Would make our pack pretty mobile and can all play big minutes, Curran I think may be better in second row;

Addin Fonua-Blake
Egan
Harris
Curran
Niukore
Barnett

He's not a guy that would pump me up though, I feel we need leaders, not sure if he is in that bracket

Is there a possibility of Niukore at centre for us? Players like him and Talakai are showing real merits there with their speed and size and how they use it. I personally like him in the second row, but centre could be a possibility and we chase another middle or edge forward?
I think its likely he will get time at centre, especially if we sign Barnett, and/or dont sign Arthurs. The physicality in the game is changing. We have tall rangy middles dominating the game with footwork and offloads, and shorter more powerful edges and centres running wide and over the top of 5/8s etc. Talakai and Niukore are prototypes for this new style of centre, great speed, big frames, good footwork and ball skills.

Am I the only one thinking Barnett’s a bit of a plodder.

And prone to a brain explosion except not good enough to negate that side of his game like TPJ for example.

That aside, just seems like an average starting player. I’d be abit worried if what that poster said is true about the money being too good to turn down.

We desperately need Katoa to start delivering on that potential to become our second row combo with Nuikore moving forward

Im wary of an Evans like penalty/suspension magnet

I’ve never really focused on Barnett aye. Has always seemed like one of those solid, hard working Aussie types that doesn’t get a lot of credit/wraps.
I was really surprised to see how good his stats were. The consistency and numbers of his tackles and meters has been great over the last two years, and has a tackle break and offload in him too.
Also, not too sure about the brain explosion part - averages 0.2 penalties a game but also 0.8 for errors.
So, no penalty magnet here

Fair enough to be wary of Warriors recruitment targets for those reasons, in defence of Barnett his 6 week suspension is an anomaly when looking at his overall Nrl career though. He’s played the vast majority of games since debuting in 2016, he missed 12 games in 2020 after neck surgery, otherwise he’s been a reliable starter.

I’d be comfortable with signing Mitch Barnett, our squad could use another hardened Nrl player if we’re to lose two in Lodge and Aitken next season.

The balance between having a lot of ’flash’ but little ‘substance‘ hasn’t been more evident than in the Broncos roster over the last few seasons. They score some nice tries but can’t grind for shit and buckle under minimal pressure.

We have a talented but youthful squad especially in our outside backs, I’m all for a Mitch Barnett type out on an edge with these young players.

If you can find his highlights, the thought of him and Niukore as a back row pairing is a very physical one. Or as a lock. I like the signing.

I hope we're not recruiting Barnett to play Prop. At 104kg & 187cm he's similar in sature to Curran. Barnett has started just 2 games at Prop in his career to date & he is 13kg smaller than Lodge. Chasing a specialist Prop to replace Lodge or converting Katoa (110kg) is a better option imo. If we get Barnett then play him at left edge Second Row, where he's had the most success in his career. Niukore should play right edge whether it be at Second Row or Centre.

Yeah he's a serviceable forward with an occasional brain melt moment which won't show up on the stats. He'll definitely bring hard mf attitude which is probably what the club will be after the most. But we shouldn't be paying anything over market value of what he would receive if he stayed in aus. Just doesn't move the needle that much for any team.

Now Confirmed:

The Vodafone Warriors have added more power and experience to their pack for 2023 and beyond by securing Newcastle back rower Mitchell Barnett on a three-year contract from next season.

The 27-year-old Barnett joins fellow second rower Marata Niukore (Parramatta), centre Dylan Walker (Manly Warringah) and halfback Luke Metcalf (Cronulla Sutherland) as the club’s major acquisitions so far for 2023.

Now in his eighth season with 117 appearances to his name, Barnett has been a mainstay of the Newcastle pack since 2016.

“We couldn’t be happier to have a player of Mitch’s proven ability on board from next year,” said Vodafone Warriors general manager football Craig Hodges.

“He has been on our target list for some time as we look to boost our pack. He brings a level of intensity and passion which is going to be a real asset for us.”

I know this year is barely a quarter way through but I am excited about our squad for next year. Some really decent acquisitions and if we can miraculously retain Lodge or someone of similar ilk in the front row we are going to have a fantastic squad on paper. I am hoping our young centers progress well.....and Kosi continues to improve....

Had a good laugh going back and watching this U20s incident.

Lol Nathan Brown wanting to fight with his own players to get back at Barnett.

Pretty funny stuff.

Nathan Brown seems to be a bit more disciplined these days. He looks to have cut out that rubbish like what he did to Jazz a couple of seasons ago.

I hope Mitch Barnett's long stint on the sideline is a bit of a wakeup call. I recall him putting his hand down on Walsh's throat last year which he was lucky to get away with to be honest. Really want him to play hard, but keep away from the niggly stuff when he joins us.

Adding Barnett should help out the forward pack, but assuming Lodge is gone in 23 just a swap out .. haven't seen Barnett's judiciary record to date either. Overall, still feel we're 1 elite big boppa short, to really make a go of it, this year and next..
