General MAGIC ROUND NRL 2021 Round 10 - General Discussion

Just my probably unwanted opinion.
But isn’t protecting player health and future wellness More important than our entertainment?
We are talking about someons Posible quality of life and comparing it with our own short term satisfaction. Watching union they now call an offence to even minor contact to the head, it’s still plenty physical a lot of high tackles are lazy arms or poor technique, I dont know maybe I’m soft and sure maybe some calls are harsh. But I reckon They need to be to shock players into realising they can’t be careless anymore. I don’t think this change was ever about us as a fan base it’s about player welfare.
JUSt my thought.

You are not soft.

This is correct. It is a medical question ultimately. The rest is noise from us Dinosaurs lamenting the end of an era.

Just like the shoulder charge and the Pole Axe, no place for it in the game now. I used to love seeing both those tackles put on people.

Same with fighting, man I loved fighting more than the game, but allowing that makes for poor examples to young men around violence.

I don't care what the psychologists say, seeing blokes thump each other used to make some part of me want to fight.

In fact I did get in a scrap with my brother straight after Tamati Dowling, and it was a bad fight haha but teenage boys yelling about who started what my era always ended in a punch up.

Times are changing and people have to adapt, that is just how it is.

Player welfare is 100% the priority BUT penalising an accident is a joke. Players get hurt in a normal tackle so do we ban tackling completely?

Deliberate contact with the head needs to be outlawed. That on Tedesco ruined a good game. He was on one knee FFS

Was your brother supporting the Aussies? I hope you beat some sense into the poor misguided kid Dave.

Would agree but many of these instances so far this weekend are the outcome of high speed collisions - there will always be accidents in the game, they‘ll never get them out, especially with the increase in speed and gassed players everywhere. The Teddy one was just ridiculous.

Maybe they should design special helmets for the players then? I’m being serious.

Penalising players for accidental contact in a contact sport is a joke. Might as well not play at all then aye. Players and fans know the risks. It’s part of the reason why people also follow the sport.

Get rid of the biff, shoulder charge, accident contact to the head.... what next?.... penalty for tackling too hard ???? FMD we might as well just play touch rugby

I can see the future, Worried2Death will be banned if he tells any jokes because it might trigger the younglings 🤣 I'm glad I'm on the way out, my way of life is over, i can see that now. Them games sucked, it was like all the fun was sucked away, the left is ruining everything. Sup42 knows my views on the left 🤣

Bennet quote in support of the head high changes: "The AFL won't accept it. You touch anybody above the shoulders you're in trouble. Rugby union made a huge change two years ago,"

I used to watch the All Blacks (but not super rugby) until a few years ago. Then they stated sending players off for tackling across the shoulder and we lost a game basically because of it when someone was sent off. Haven’t watched any union game for several years since.

Although I agree with pretty much everything you say, the only thing I would add is - How will Origin be reffed?

I would bet my last buck the NRL will put our entertainment ahead of player welfare for 240mins again this season and roll out "the greatest spectacle on earth"

Wonder when Bennett made those comments: before or after one of his players came out of a perfectly legal tackle and earned an Oscar nomination for portraying a player who had had pressure put on his neck. A tackle that led to a penalty which led to a try that put the game out beyond the Sharks.

He claimed Tamati started it.....I don't think he gave a stuff about Dowling, he was older, I think he just wanted to beat me up....I was saved by the old man who came in and gave us both a hiding.....for fighting....as ya do.....
We used to get the same thing from mum.
A hiding for fighting.

the worse ones were always when it was my older sister doing the fighting

I never fought her back. Two reasons. She was a girl and the one time I did fight back she beat me up real bad.
So I copped it from her then mum for fighting.
It made perfect sense at the time but now I am not so sure.
The 80’s were fucking brutal.

then they have to bring back the penalty for acting. saw this happen, and thought just like you "wat a load of shit". Repeat actors should be sent off.

watching the replay of the cowboys vs the roosters and at 16mins to go the most bullshit use of rules all weekend in my opinion

cowboys player flat on his feet, tedesco runs into him head down, and bounces off his chest. Tedesco goes down. whistle blows teddy stands up, total time 10secs or less.

Cowboys player sent off, and tedesco sent off for health check, tedesco goes to side line and then subbs straight back on to the field for the next play.

Cowboys now down a player, Roosters get a kick at goal to go 8 ahead, and teddy still on the field.

Fuck me dead

That's a rough sendoff. 10 mins ok but I'd be spewing if that was us.

Hate to see Papenhuyzen stretchered off.

But does anyone remember when Rugby Union decided anytime a ball was contested in the air someone had to get a red card?

It ruined the contest, and the game wasn't even worth watching. They (the powers above) realised this and adjusted because their bottom line was under threat.

I think Rugby League is in a similar period. As we all slowly switch off, some kind of balance will be restored. Afterall, they want to protect players heads, but they want to protect their profit margins even more.

I think you are absolutely right that this is the ideal opinion we hold.

But we have to be pragmatic too. If we enforce it in an extreme manner it's hard to see how we have a contest worth watching.

It might be an unpopular opinion, but we have to decide if we want zero head contact, or we want to watch a true physical battle. You can't have both. Not at high speed, human reaction time says its not possible.

It's especially unfair to enforce it with all the responsibility on the defender. Guys like Teddy duck into almost every tackle, giving the defender no time to react. It's just absurd as you can't blame a player for not reacting in the time we know it is literally physically impossible for a human to do so.

It will be a little while yet. Cash money wins for now.

But in 10 years we'll all be wearing a VR headset, plugged into the matrix and have little care about such real world questions ;)
