Our problem has been that we can't create gaps; how often did you see a warrior in space last year, fix that and metcalf looks like he can exploit that space but so can Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and others.
Having someone with explosive acceleration can help create gaps. The defence either needs to stand wider, opening up space on the inside, move up faster, which creates the opportunity for someone to step, or leave space on the outside.

Defending against someone with superior acceleration to you is one of the hardest things you can do on a league field. You need your team to back your decision making. But if you get it wrong...

Yeah Dallin Watene-Zelezniak is the only one who would get close at any point.

Vailea is more of a Justin Hodges style player. More about the body movement/agility to make a man miss and have enough acceleration to make a break rather than top end speed.

Te Maire Martin, Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, Kosi, Pompey, Montoya, none of them would even come close to touching Metcalf in a foot race - short or long distance.
No doubt about Metcalf being up there and I'm not saying they'd be comparable, but I remember thinking Kosi is surprisingly quick, hard to find any of those telstra tracker things for him though

No doubt but we had that with Walsh at fullback last year and we couldn't unleash him despite his acceleration. Anyway I am not to.worried, I expect a much different performance from our team under Webby than we got from Brown.

That might say more about the rest of the team unfortunately. Hopefully we don't try and stick muscle on him, he's fast because he's light. It's a power to weight ratio thing. If Dallin Watene-Zelezniak was 5 to 10kgs lighter, he'd be faster for sure.

I scratched around for some athletics results for him after he signed and found some obscure school ones that had him running in the high 10s for the 100m which is similar to Savage and Koula at the same age. Sub 11 as a teenager is elite speed, anyone who can run that should be playing sport professionally or at least semi-pro.

Kosi's top speed might be good but his acceleration is poohs, same as Ken and Manu. That's why he's a winger, he needs to be already moving when he gets the ball to utilise any speed he has.

Problem is he's surprisingly quick "for his size" but take out the size and he'd be middle of the pack at best for wingers purely in terms of speed.

Good for hit ups and short range tries, but anything over 20m and the opposition winger can close the gap and use the sideline to their advantage.

Hard to say if he has blistering speed or not based on his '22 highlights. What it does look like is that he has outstanding acceleration, and glides when he runs. Players like that tend to be faster than footage makes them appear. Won't get a true comparison until you see him out run a first grade outside back.

I'd like to see him play at 6, outside Shaun Johnson, with Shaun Johnson putting him into holes. If they slide off Shaun Johnson early, he still has his step. If they hold on Shaun Johnson, Metcalfe looks to have the acceleration to make outside breaks. Te Maire Martin to fullback, Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad to centre if they play Metcalfe at 6.
Noticed a lot of his touches were on the right would Shaun be comfortable playing left side majority of the time?

For mine him not being near the 17 is a slight oversight. There is no substitute for speed.
The first 12 rounds we will be doing it tough against Bulldogs, Roosters, Penrith and throw in the Knights.

My hope is that Webster saw this is gonna play a team he thinks can limit points then we break out our run with players with zero baggage in second half of the comp.

Where’s Jonno and his Internet watch when you need him?

Warriors' Luke Metcalf suffers hamstring injury, Demitric Sifakula's contract upgraded

Luke Metcalf of the Warriors makes a break against the Tigers.

The Warriors have suffered a pre-season injury blow with key signing Luke Metcalf sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Coach Andrew Webster said Metcalf suffered the injury at training on Wednesday, ahead of Sunday’s NRL pre-season match against the Melbourne Storm in Christchurch. Metcalf told Warriors medical staff he was still feeling sore on Thursday.

It is uncertain how long Metcalf will be sidelined for, with initial thoughts he could be out between 2-8 weeks, thereby putting him in doubt for their season opener against the Knights in Wellington on March 3.

Metcalf will undergo further tests to find out the severity of the injury and more is expected to be known later this week.

Metcalf, 23, joined from Cronulla Sharks and wore the No 6 jersey in their opening pre-season match against Wests Tigers, where he was one of the standout performers in the 48-12 win.

Shaun Johnson and Te Maire Martin were named to start in the halves for the Warriors against the Storm, with Metcalf originally on the bench.
Metcalf played so well in the trial game, that there had already been calls for him to claim a starting spot ahead of Johnson, however that was unlikely to happen, especially at the beginning of the season.

Man news today is he had hamstring issue possibility of missing 2-8 weeks. We can't catch a break.
