Ligi Sao

Looks like Ligi Sao is heading here next year according to Peter Peters on radio sport a few minutes ago. Apparently he played here in the juniors. Can anyone shed some light on the type of player he is a what position he could play??

Sao returning home to rejoin club

Manly forward Ligi Sao is coming home to rejoin the Vodafone Warriors on a two-year contract for the 2016 and 2017 NRL seasons.

The Manurewa Marlins junior joined the Sea Eagles in 2013 after 36 NYC appearances for the Vodafone Junior Warriors including their 2011 grand final win.

Since his NRL debut in 2013 he has made 16 NRL appearances, 15 of them this season. While used mainly off the bench he has started at loose forward in Manly’s last two games.

“We’ve been watching Ligi and he has developed well at Manly, especially this year with a lot more exposure at NRL level,” said Vodafone Warriors head coach Andrew McFadden.

“He helps our depth with our middle players and increases competition for spots. It’s also great to be able to bring Ligi back home.”

The Stan Martin-managed Sao said returning home was a key factor in his decision.

“I’ve got the rest of this season ahead of me here at Manly but I’m excited the Warriors have given me the chance to come home,” he said.

“It’s a new challenge for me and one I’m looking forward to. I’ve really enjoyed my time with Manly and have been lucky to be around some great players but it’s going to good being back in Auckland for next season.”

Sao will find plenty of familiar faces from his NYC days at the club with former team-mates Konrad Hurrell, Raymond Faitala-Mariner, David Fusitua, Ngani Laumape, Albert Vete and Ben Henry among those if the NRL squad.

That's an awesome signing! Certainly heading in the right direction in terms of what players were targeting, has size aggression and makes plenty of metres. Pumped, keep these signings coming!

I watch my fair bit of 20s and while he was playing, he often played the full 80 mins so has a good motor on him, should even push for a starting spot next year? Mutts and Lillyman, with vete, lisone, Sao, some backrower, probs benry if he's fit.

I was disappointed when Sao left.
At the time we weren't really flush for props and he seemed like the best one coming through- kinda thought manly would be a good club to develop him tho and he might want to come home one day and it looks like that days arrived.
I remember thinking he must've been unlucky to miss out on the Toyota cup team of the year but from memory he missed out to Klemmer and napa so no shame there.
He's tough and hard working and reminds me a bit of leeson ah mau due to the fact every time I see them play they seem to get better which is a good sign. ( edit- snap mode81 )
Would've been cheap and it's always good to bring our juniors back home- pity hiku isn't coming back with him.

Can't complain. He's clearly one of the players Manly don't want to keep so he must be on peanuts. We are lacking a bit of depth in that area so no harm bringing in another young forward with at least some NRL experience and knows the club well. I guess you always have to ask why another club is happy to let a player go, but I suppose we'll find out what he's made of in due course.

I think the answer to that is in the article - he wants to come home.

Looking at that expression on Ligi's face as he crossed for a meat pie, it is very similar to Feleti Mateo's expression... except instead of crossing for a meat pie, he was being offered one. Wonder if Felet's, being the great financial career advisor that he is (by the way, hows your career prospects old mate?), offered Ligi some advice on how to deal with the Warriors? :)

I probably wouldn't. Haven't ever particularly rated the guy. Would be good injury cover, but he's wanting a starting / top 17 spot and I don't think he's something we need. As unrealistic as it is, I would prefer a couple of backs that don't think tackling is Simon Mannering's job.

Ligi can play second row if I remember rightly
I'd rather a center or wing signing
SBW ,player coach there you go two
