Bit of a catch 22 for the NZRL, they lost players to Tonga this year and I’m sure will be wanting to make a bit of a statement by not welcoming back those players.

One way to drive this home would be to starve the Tongan NZers of tier 1 games leaving them to only having the odd game against Samoa essentially.

Not saying it’s right but for selfish reasons why would NZ weaken itself and help Tonga get stronger?
The only catch the NZRL should worry themselves about is how its the Tongan fans that will ensure the stadium sells out and leaves them with a nice chunk of change. We all know the ANZAC Tests weren't returning shit for them at all once player payments had been made.

Problem is the NZRL are run by a bunch of gutless, broke idiots who couldn't score a root in a whorehouse...

and were represented by a bunch of turncoats players..

Things have changed now and the dust has far from settled, if the NZRL turn it all around and head back in the right direction they will still be a Tier 1 nation with more all the spoils and Tonga can resume being a feeder nation even if for the NRL and their own selfish reasons

The Tongan and Samoan fans made the RLWC on their own really. The issue for me is that these people are mainly native born New Zealanders so where does that leave the local game. The NZRL cannot afford decent management as Union can, and that is a problem.

Tonga did better in the WC.

If anything playing them would help us get stronger.

I don't believe that the players who played for Tonga in the World Cup will ever represent another country again.

I also don't believe the Kiwis would want any of them back after what happened.
watch this space, I reckon the kiwis will drop their nuts and let em play again but I reckon aussie will block fifita from ever playing for Oz again, probably wont play SOO either coz thats how they roll.

Oh FFS NZRL is run by a bunch of fuckin retards!!!!

“The NZRL have long relied on the NRL to pay Kiwis players but that hand-out is no longer available under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, making it more urgent for them to uncover and develop new revenue streams.”

For that reason alone you would think the logical thing to do would be fight for a NZ v Tonga grudge match at Mt Smart in front of 30,000 screaming, singing, dancing Tongans. At least that way they might make some money to afford a decent coach!!

But the genius’s at HQ instead want to schedule a game against Fiji.....

Told ya. Idiots. They seem lost without being told what to do by the NRL. Place needs some real leadership. Time to cut the cord and forge our own destiny for the good of the game here. Pacific games are the way forward...

I totally disagree about the Pacific thing, just for the broken record. As for internationals it is not the job of the NRL to foster international rugby league, they have enough problems of their own.

Having said that they cannot expect to bludge off the good work done by mainly unpaid junior league league coaches forever, but I doubt they have given it any thought.

So you are in favour of staying with the status quo and seeing the game die in NZ? How in hell do you think the NZRL are going to pay players fees of $30K for one offs or $7500 for series? For one the players have to take a drastic pay cut and the only way I see the NZRL getting money into their coffers is selling out Mt Smart playing Tonga, Samoa or Fiji. We know damn well NZers don't support the Kiwis so lets get in nations who have crowd support and start funneling that money into our local game cause the NRL sure don't give a shit...

Definitely not, but losing high calibre players to a foreign national team that don't have birth right is frightening. Given the context of STH AKL being the RL stronghold of NZ that would be the death knell for the NZRL because the money is offshore and the NRL will swoop in to profit..

Quite likely if the Test series in England 2018 isn't successful, but I'd rather be aligned to ERL/RLIF and their closer ties to the rest of the greater world than the self-centred NRL/ARC
the only way I see the NZRL getting money into their coffers is selling out Mt Smart playing Tonga, Samoa or Fiji.
That would be akin to cutting off one's nose to spite one's face, as you allude to below, the hearts and minds of the core population in the RL stronghold of NZ are with their heritage nations and not their nation of birth/residence.
Beside, the corporate dollars that target these audiences look to be rather limited unless you are supported by Aunty Jacinda..
We know damn well NZers don't support the Kiwis so lets get in nations who have crowd support and start funneling that money into our local game cause the NRL sure don't give a shit...
NZers on mass support Union, and the country is too small in population to spread that support meaningfully and consistantly. NZers by nature are rather sheepish/conservative as opposed to Polynesians, Australians or people from the UK, Europe and the Americas. Hell, may well say the rest of the world but we are Kiwis and we do have pride and we are underdogs and we are world beaters!
We need more Valerie & Steven Adams, more Hamish Bonds & Eric Murrays, Peter Blakes & Russell Coutts, more David Tuas & Joseph Parkers, more Grant Daltons & Peter Burlings, more Jim Doyles & Stephen Kearneys. Those people have inspired us with feats built on solid principles, but NZers do not care for watching a bunch of turncoats beat our diminished underdogs. That said, if the NZRL were doing a better job ala Doyle & Kearney era then the appetite would return and with it the funds.

PS. the NRL do give a shit, they look at the money they can get for their own coffers and manipulate the players to profit for their own good, unfortunately they have been able to have their way due to lack of competition to the governance from borne of domination.

why do we need the nrl? Book the dates. Picl players who are released and who will play for $500 match payment. Book the game with tonga they are the dream sell for a one off. Release some propaganda 2 weeks out thats anti tonga and mt smart will sell out. Go 50/50 help them make some cash for their tours at the end. Everyones a winner.

The international game needs to follow the footsteps of the forefathers of the game and fight the system. Make your own calendar and play games. Simple as that. Stop dropping nuts and get some games going during the year.

Kiwis should even play tests as soon as playoffs are done. September should ne the start of international footy season and play who is available.

Completely agree.

The players shouldn't need money to entice them to play for the Kiwis. I'd hope that they would understand the importance of the NZRL becoming able to stand on its own two feet financially and then having money to get the best staff and coaches it can to grow the game.

The NRL are very stubborn and I think a little bit scared that there's a chance the International game could one day grow and be bigger than their precious State of Origin. In the end it would only benefit the NRL but I don't think they can see that.

Not sure if this is in the right thread but i just read this (and sorry if its old news). :-(

"Newcastle Kalyn Ponga will represent Queensland and Australia after rejecting New Zealand

QUEENSLAND is preparing for life without the playmakers from the golden generation with Ash Taylor, Kalyn Ponga and Corey Norman named in a streamlined Morons Senior Emerging Origin squad.

Newcastle recruit Ponga was heavily pursued by New Zealand but the former Cowboys prodigy has declared his commitment to the Morons.

Reckon there’s a few other good halves out there in the QLD ranks. He should have kept his powder dry.
From what I saw last year he’s good but not at the same level as some of those other guys.

Oh and Lloyd Perrett is in there too - don't know much about him except he was born in Hamilton and reasonably big fella. I guess after this years world cup the kiwis aren't going to be an attraction maybe for these young fellas and the chance of playing origin is too much.
