Player King Vuniyayawa

Heard from a couple of sources within the camp this guy will play NRL in 2018 and is impressing so much he could be a potential bolter off the bench RD1.

Any information on this guy? big dynamic lad apparently similar to Ukuma Tai

I thought it was a hard and fast rule this year that you couldn't come from outside the top 30 to play NRL? Or is he within the top 30 contracted players?

Players play on second tier contracts all the time. Have the rules changed with the new salary cap?

Agnatius Paasi, John Palavi, Charlie Gubb, Chris Satae, Mason Lino, Jonathan Wright, Blake Ayshford etc all made their club debuts on second tier contracts. Gubb played all 39 of his games for the club on one. Paasi made his debut on a third tier contract...

Yeah there has been a lot of talk about how hard it will be for younger guys to debut as you have to be in the top 30. I'll try and fish out the articles but they were saying you now won't see a Nathan Cleary type situation where someone comes from a long way back to debut and star. With the increase from 25 to 30 I believe this was one of the conditions in order to stop the second tier salary cap breaches that were occurring.

Some info below from a Fox Sports article. Looks like you can get long term injury exemptions.

TOP SQUAD CONTRACT FARCE

The NRL’s pathway program is flawed.

Under the NRL’s new rules, Nick Cotric, the hot favourite for Dally M rookie of the year, would never have made his first grade debut this season.

The likes of Anthony Milford or Nathan Cleary wouldn’t have popped on the scene either.

In 2018 NRL clubs have a squad of 30 players to pick from with six development players who are ineligible to play first grade.

Sharks NYC half Kyle Flanagan at training.
The second tier as we know it is non-existent which means a crucial pathway to the top grade has been blocked.

As it stands, Cronulla young gun Kyle Flanagan will be unable to play first grade in 2018.

Flanagan isn’t in the club’s top 30 which means he would need an exception to play first grade.

Under the rules, the only way he can play NRL next year is if James Maloney or Chad Townsend suffers a serious injury.

It’s understood the RLPA aren’t happy with the new system which blocks the pathway of players.

You can play second tier players only a certain amount of times. I remember when Matt Moylan broke onto the scene and he was still on a second tier contract, the NRL prevented him from playing in their last few games because they had breached the second tier cap from playing their second tier players too many times.

And from what Swanny is saying the new rules are set to try stop that even becoming an issue. Be interesting to learn more about it. Not sure how that will affect King debuting???

Shouldn't affect his debut, but could get interesting if he establishes himself as a bench regular early on, or any of the rooks for that matter.

Vuniyayawa named in Fiji Bati side

Vodafone Warriors second rower King Vuniyayawa will make his debut for Fiji Bati in next weekend’s Pacific Test double header at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

The Bati will face the Papua New Guinea Kumuls in the curtain-raiser to the match between Mate Ma’a Tonga and Toa Samoa.

The 23-year-old Lautoka-born Vuniyayawa is in a side which features many of the players who combined to stun the Kiwis 4-2 in their quarter-final clash at the 2017 Rugby League World Cup in Wellington.

A Manurewa Marlins junior and Alfriston College product, Vuniyayawa went on to play for the Papakura Sea Eagles and is now with the Howick Hornets.

He made a try-scoring Intrust Super Premiership NSW debut for the Vodafone Warriors in their 52-24 first-round win over Newcastle last season, going on to make 10 appearances.

After a delayed start to the 2018 campaign, he has played nine times so far this year. He scored a double when the Vodafone Warriors swamped Wentworthville 36-6 in their last outing on June 2 before having a bye last weekend. He’s on the bench for their 15th-round clash against the Knights this Sunday.

Vuniyayawa finds himself in a Bati side boasting six of the backline involved in the World Cup win over the Kiwis – captain Kevin Naiqama, Suliasi Vunivalu, Akuila Uate, Marcelo Montoya, Jarryd Hayne and Henry Raiwalui.

The forward pack is vastly changed, though, with Joe Lovodua, Tui Kamikamica and Eloni Vunakece plus 19th man Junior Roqica the only survivors from the victory in Wellington.
