TV One Sunday had a piece on Greg Foran, Kieran's father. It is well worth watching on TVNZ on Demand.

The only mention of Kieran was Greg making a 24 hour return flight to spend 24 hours at his recent wedding. The rest was about his background and how he made it big at Walmart.

The guy is quietly spoken and comes across very well. He seems to have a real skill at people management and his style really raised eyebrows when he first got the job at Walmart. Their share price crashed millions in a day when his restructure plan was released on Wall Street. However they have made that up with interest.

It is a genuine Kiwi success story. It does raise an obvious question though for me though. Just saying like.

I was lucky enough to attend a presentation last week and Greg Foran was the keynote speaker, interviewed by Duncan Garner. An amazing businessman who does fly under the radar. Working for an Aust owned company you’re aware of him as he was 2IC at WW Aust.. should have got the big gig but missed out.

I don’t want to say too much however both Kieren and Liam are in good relationships and are definitely on the right track, both in relationships with older woman.

Greg is a workaholic, in the office at around 6.15am each day and home by 8pm, Monday - Friday. Saturday he flies in Walmart’s jets doing store visits throughout the US. Sunday is his day off but does paper work, emails etc ... Definitely not an ideal family programme. His wife is a well organised person who acts in many ways as Greg’s PA and also looks after their 3 year old son, Ryan. Unfortunately Greg’s first wife and Mum of Kieren and Liam was not cut in the same way.

I’ll leave It at that.

Being a workaholic is an addiction. I have two friends that suffer the same condition, it masks a fear. I wouldn't take advice or aspire to be like anyone that put in a 14 hour day five or six days a week or even one day a week.

Why does Wal-Mart not pay a minimum wage?
In fact Greg increased their wages and instituted other staff benefits which has been credited with turning the company around. A very interesting guy and without doubt successful.
I was kind of hoping for something more
playdaball has just offered that explanation

It mentioned that on the doco. Some staff managed to hack into his flight plans and alerted stores in the area that he was on his way...so he started filing fake flight plans!!
Definitely not an ideal family programme.
Without any doubt. However like you I was very impressed with the guy, especially how quietly spoken he was. I was expecting the American dream hype but there was none.

Not being a psychologist but I understand there are three primal motivations i.e. love, hate and fear. Then there is an obsession.

Greg Foran said he was to go to university after finishing school and opted for a gap year working at Woolworths. He enjoyed the analysis involved in retailing, found he was good at it so stayed with Woolworths. I don't think there is any fear in that, just an enjoyment with some obsession.

Successful people tend to be obssessive e.g.SK leaving his family in Brisbane to take on this basket case. I don't hear anybody complaining about that. One has to wonder what the Woolworths board think of having let him go to Walmart?

His responsibility is mind boggling, so much so that although he is earning millions a year (and could buy the Warriors with his petty cash), he doesn't even think about what he earns. The Walmart turnover dwarfs the NZ economy so maybe we should entice him back here to run treasury!!

He said he senses the responsibility because many people have taken a huge gamble on him. Kieran might look like his dad, but sure doesn't talk like him.

He sort of sounds like Sir Stephen Tindall of the Warehouse. He cut his teeth in retailing as a teenager and then found he was good at it and enjoyed it. It seems whenever Tindall take his hand off the helm that place starts to go off the rails. From, the sounds of it Walmart see Foran in the same light.

Not forgetting he is ‘responsible’ for hiring 1.1m workers - almost the size of AUCKLAND. He is very well respected In Grocery / FMCG, not only as a great worker but also as a great person. I woul$nt be so hard on his sons, they’re doing okay now.

Massive mistake, from memory Greg Foran wanted to keep the pressure on competitor Coles by reinvesting cost savings back into grocery prices. Instead the board decided to go with a weak CEO and a strategy to maximise short-term profits, giving Coles the opportunity to recover and win back market share. Getting rid of Foran ultimately cost Woolworths billions.
