Carlos Tuimavave has been named in an unchanged starting line-up for the Vodafone Junior Warriors’ sudden-death week two NYC final against the Sydney Roosters at ANZ Stadium on Saturday (7.15pm kick-off NZ time).
Tuimavave was forced off the field with an ankle injury in last Sunday’s 38-39 loss to Canberra but it’s hoped he will recover in time to face the Roosters as the Vodafone Junior Warriors bid to stay alive in their quest for a third straight premiership.
While Tuimavave has been included, coach John Ackland has named a seven-man interchange.
Last week’s bench players Trent Bishop, Toka Likiliki, Nathaniel Peteru and Albert Vete have been joined by Omar Slaimankhel, James Taylor and Braxton Stanley.
After five NRL appearances Tuimavave (20) was having his first NYC outing last weekend in almost two months only to have it cut short.
Even without his guiding influence and experience, the reshuffled Vodafone Junior Warriors were able to climb back into the contest against the Raiders despite being well behind for the first 50 minutes of the game.
While they were ultimately denied they contributed significantly to a 14-try, 77-point thriller before being cruelly undone by a last-second field goal.
The Vodafone Junior Warriors’ third defeat in as many visits to Canberra – one of the game’s most difficult road trips – at least came with the consolation of another life this weekend, albeit against a Sydney Roosters side which found a way to win in a manner as astonishing as Canberra’s was.
Where the Raiders recovered from 32-38 to beat the Vodafone Junior Warriors in the final four minutes, the Roosters were down 20-22 in the dying moments when centre Curtis Rona scored the match-winning try, his third of the day. In winning 24-22, the Roosters scored six unconverted tries.
If Tuimavave recovers, he’ll again link up with Mason Lino in the halves, the 18-year-old providing a try and five conversions for a 14-point contribution against Canberra which boosted the rookie’s tally for the year to 142 points.
Centre Ngani Laumape remains the team’s leading try-scorer, his try against the Raiders taking his total to 16 in 19 appearances. Hooker Siliva Havili also scored again, giving him 14 tries in 23 matches this and a career tally of 23 tries in 50 games.
