Jim Doyle knows the clock is ticking. The Warriors boss admits this year is a "defining season" for him, and if the club doesn't achieve success he may not be at Mt Smart in 2018. In a frank interview with the Herald on Sunday, Doyle said it might be time for someone else to lead the organisation if results don't come in the next eight months.

"Obviously it depends on the circumstances," said Doyle. "Things might not go well [this year] but it depends on how [it happens]. But if there has been no dramas, no issues along the way, and no significant injuries and I am sitting here thinking I don't know how I could improve things - then there is no point me being here. That would be my context. If I can't think of anything that will make us better, then obviously I am not the right person."

Doyle, who took the role at the end of the 2014 season, emphasises he has no desire to walk away but takes a pragmatic view.

"I've always said as long as I am having fun and adding value then I will stick around, said Doyle.

"But if I am not enjoying it - and I am not adding value - then it doesn't make sense for me to be here."

The NRL's clearance of Kieran Foran yesterday feels like the final piece of Jim's Jigsaw. Since he arrived, the Scot has shaken up the Warriors, on and off the field. He drove the acquisition of Issac Luke and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, secured the club's future at Mt Smart, backed Andrew McFadden throughout an awful losing streak, sanctioned the departure of Konrad Hurrell, brought in Stephen Kearney as head coach and then allowed McFadden to stay on, in an unusual scenario. Foran is his biggest gamble, and adds an extra layer of pressure to this year. The Kiwi five-eighth is seen as the last piece in the puzzle, to help the Warriors take the next step. Doyle - whose relationship with Foran goes back to his days as NZRL chief executive - has been the embattled player's greatest advocate and invested significant time and energy in him.

"It is a defining season, certainly for me," said Doyle. "In any organisation the CEO is responsible for creating the right environment and getting the right people. We have the best coaching staff the club has ever had and a pretty good roster. We'll have issues along the way - whether they are injuries or other things - but hopefully we have people who can cope with that."

Doyle maintains a demanding work schedule. He's at his desk at 6.30am most days - leaving for home about 12 hours later - and can often be found replying to emails and texts in the evening. It's unrelenting, but rewarding.

"You get measured on a weekly basis. You have good weeks, bad weeks, good months, bad months and are constantly under the spotlight," Doyle said.

"I wasn't relishing that when I took the role but the challenge of getting this club to a level where it should be offsets that."

Best coaching staff the club has ever had?
He does realize his head coach has one of the worst records in the history of the game right?....it's almost like he's looking for an out.

Translation: If you're not enjoying yourself (ie bringing a positive attitude) and if you're not adding value (ie are taking more than you are giving) then you might as well bugger off.

I'm not suggesting for a second that Doyle fits that description btw... Anyone who thinks Doyle's a taker with a shit attitude is just straight up wrong.

Out and out respect... this is not about Jim at all.

And for one I totally disagree with Facefacts post. Next we'll be hearing the bring back Cleary protests again.

Im somewhat with Facefacts, Kearneys only foray into the NRL (head) coaching previously was a monumental failure. He has had success with the Kiwis but so did McClennan.

So i'm not convinced Kearney can turn this team around yet, we have seen them turn up for a coach for half a season in the past and then completely fall to pieces at the end of the season. It happened to McFadden and Elliot.

Based on the last 2 games I would say they look like bottom 8 at the moment

I like how he says we have a pretty good roster, he has to not bag them but sounds lie he understands we have some gaps and so should have plans to fill them.

He obviously doesn't see any hint of light at the end of the tunnel.
Just setting up a nice way for him to step down at end of the season.

I'm impressed by Doyle's comments in the article - they aren't consistent with my assertion in a post the other day that he suffered from hubris.

Putting that aside, can those of you that rate him so damn highly please explain to me why you hold that view? I get that he signed Roger Tuivasa-Sheck who I think we all agree is an exceptional player that is in the top tier of young fullbacks along with Tedesco, Trbojevic and Moylan. He also ensured that pragmatism prevailed with the Warriors remaining at Mt Smart.

However he's now into his 3rd season in charge of our club and it genuinely looks like we are regressing still. Luke was a top tier hooker but he's past his best and probably at the wrong club for his personality type - I see an article in the paper today saying we might adopt the Storm model - well news for that reporter - Luke ain't Cameron Smith. All our other signings have been duds, including the defensive coach in 2016 that Doyle trumpeted about initially.

Doyle has been successful in business, a self mad man. Well I know a few like that however they wouldn't be any good as CEO of the Warriors. Doyle proved to be an excellent administrator at the NZRL - again I don't see the link between that and being able to formulate a strategy that can turn around the onfield performance of the Warriors. People will say that it is the coaches job however it seems to me to be Doyle calling the shots on recruitment - the Foran signing is Doyle's gamble not Kearney's. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and possibly Tohu Harris aside, Doyle seems to be fixated on signing players that have reached their peak and are on the decline rather than signing players that are showing significant promise but are yet to realise their potential. Perhaps that is simply the problem of Aussies not wanting to come to NZ to live, I'm not sure. However all Doyle seems to be to me is a massive league/Warriors fan that lacks the genuine insight to firstly work out what our problems are and secondly how to fix them.

I really hope I'm completely wrong. I hope that Doyle knows exactly what he is doing and that things fall into place as season 2017 progresses. Despite my negativity over Foran I hope that he does get on the park and within a few rounds get back to his very best. I hope that we make the top 8 and then play deep into the finals, because like a lot of other fans I'm really fucking over the crap our team has dished up over the last 5 years. Anyway if someone can objectively spell out why they have so much respect for Doyle as our CEO then I would welcome it because my faith in our side is running very low.

I think Kerney learned a lot from that experience with the Eels. Then he was humble enough to go back to school as assistant, which lucky for him ended up with a couple of years studying under his good buddy WB...

We saw the fruits of his improvement with the success at the Kiwis.

MacNamara is an international head coach, and McFadden has head coaching experience also.

Which Warriors coaching staff has been better. Not just head coach, but the whole team of coaches combined?

I see faith as something you are supposed to maintain without any external proof. So if your faith is running low then that's not the clubs fault imo. Sorry to nitpick, but faith is such a contentious topic around here so I feel it's justified to clarify. Having confidence in the club is another matter tho. Repeated failure will dent the short term confidence for sure, but shouldn't affect the faith.

I can't imagine losing my faith in this club. It's not even a possibility for me. I have no doubt whatsoever that they will continue to try to win footy games and make Auckland and NZ a better place to live.

As for Doyle as CEO, I think he's great. He has a vision of bringing Kiwis back home to play for us, as opposed to trying to lure Aussies away from their home country at a premium. It's the best way I can think off for us to attract real footy talent to move over the ditch at the same market rates the Aussies are paying. How well it's achieving that goal remains to be seen, but it's still the best chance we have.

He's also providing a positive role model. His personal integrity is second to none IMO. He takes full responsibility for everything he does and extends that responsibility to the club as a whole. And his work ethic sounds awesome as well going of that article.

We're not going to find a better CEO. Maybe we find an equal, but there's none better IMO.

Three things I like about Doyle.

1. He is not a Boardroom guy, watches the games from the terraces and mingles. He has instituted forums where grassroots fans can have a voice.

2. He has backed up his commitment to the Warriors by buying a share. The size doesn't matter, he has skin in the game.

3. No false promises, he runs a tight ship and people are accountable.

The team put in a good defensive effort for most of the game, but the little things that i look for in general play that would indicate to me a real change in coaching still aren't there...I think Foran could greatly improve the team, solely because he's in a position that can control what's happening on the field and what the players around him are doing, and he has also come from an incredibly well coached club under Hasler at Manly. Unfortunately he still has to contend with very average coaching/team selection.

Doyle has done some fantastic things for the club, and i can't remember too many occasions when iv'e had a bad word to say about him, but i would happily hand back Luke, Shek, and Foran to secure a true elite coach, because that's what it will take to fix this joint.

Doyle is the right person in the right job to turn this Club around. No doubt about that imo. However to do that he will need to turn it upside down & shake the shit out first. It's not going to happen overnight or maybe this season but Doyle doesn't seem the kind of guy to back a loser or be swayed by sentiment.

This season is likely to be hard on players, fans & everyone involved in the turn around but I'm confident there is a clear plan and the result will be worth the turmoil.

I doubt he's going anywhere anytime soon
Is he hinting at a big Steven Kerney style player clean-out coming then?

He's given the coaches a big rap, and stated the criteria for what he would fire himself over.

Scottish accent: "If I was as useless as you laddie, I'd fire myself.";)
