even though the worst part of his play this year has been un forced errors ( some people need to look up what un forced means in the dictionary )
Why will we see a picture of Tomkins or one of our other players?;)

I think if you switched Bukuya to the left edge besides Townsend you would see what I'm talking about.....that Fulluah Townsend is the one who has a set move with Matulino and Tomkins that would normally be the way Bukuya and Carney played together at the Sharks,
So one solution to get more out of Bukuya is to put him with Townsend...that would get immediate success from any end of the field they could run that move and we'd see Bukuya go through the hole and pass to Tomkins who runs as the support ( ala Matulino passed to TL on to Tomkins rom inside our half V the dogs ) and boom......Warriors have a length of the field try scoring threat off a set play.
When we lined up at the start of the year I was expecting to see Johnson back on the left so he would work with Mateo and Townsend on the right and he would work with Bakuya. If we did that it would of helped integrating both players into the team.

Bukuya is a guy who plays fast. As others have mentioned his best asset is hole running. I reckon with our best side out there he is a player who would suit coming off the bench at right hand second row through the middle of the game and playing fast.
I'm also surprised we haven't seen this at some point to change things up a bit. He has quick leg speed so would be useful to try off the bench.

Underwhelming.

That's how I'd probably describe him. Not poor, not Nielsen like ineffectual, not a liability, just underwhelming. Not really a line breaker, not a noted offloader, doesnt have huge prescence in terms of size or speed, not a workaholic in the Michael Luck mode (although he does have some okayish numbers but that's more virtue of playing the 80 than anything else). His goal line defence leaves a bit to be desired, let James Graham in for a real soft try against the Doggies, then followed that up the next week with a similar soft effort with Dave Taylor. For a supposed line runner he made a meal of that absolute gift of a hole Shaun Johnson put him in last week. Why he decided to cut back in i dont know. As others have said it appears his greatest value so far is being able to run a decoy. I'd much rather Ikahihifo playing that wider running option, that awkward running style of his, hit and spin.....just think he'd be much more of a handful for the
defence than Bukkake.

None of our imports are playing as well as they did last year.

Tomkins we've heard it because he has come from a weaker competition even though the worst part of his play this year has been un forced errors ( some people need to look up what un forced means in the dictionary )

Tomkins has hit a flat form patch. He will adjust and stop the panic mistakes , get used to the Warriors and be a dominant force in that team too.

Chad hasn't reached his great form of last year. He is in a different role so he's going good as the bridesmaid , in years to come he will be a dominant half with the kicking game as he was in the NSW cup. Finding his role in the Warriors and back in the NRL ( very inexperienced ) he's having a top season now. Much more to come from that fullah.

Bukyua is well off last year. To me it's pretty obvious why,

He played alongside a better forward pack and a sht back line with one very good player ( Carney ) in it. Cronulla use halfback second row link plays like we used to , and put second rowers in holes , Bukuya has a good instinct for running the hole.

Tomkins arival has changed our style to a structured Backline attacking team.....we used to put Luck and Lowrie _ Taylor in half gaps around the ruck ( Mannering too ) none of those guys have the running game of Bukuya.......we have gone away from that scoring through the forwards because we have the strike power and ball distributors in our spine to make those constant ruck set moves a lesser option.

I think if you switched Bukuya to the left edge besides Townsend you would see what I'm talking about.....that Fulluah Townsend is the one who has a set move with Matulino and Tomkins that would normally be the way Bukuya and Carney played together at the Sharks,

That would be the quick fix impatient way to go about it.

The right thing to do is leave things as they are and get Johnson and Tomkins running that same Move on the right edge.

Hoffmans coming next year and he is better at that left set play than Matulino and Bukuya so putting Bukuya there now is a waste of time.

Johnson's very good at linking with a forward when he gets familiar with them.....

This year Johnson has used Bukuya as his decoy a lot.....which in a way is a shame.....wrong forward....bit of a waste.....Johnson has tried to go flat to Bukuya when he runs the decoy and hit him in the way Mateo hits other flat runners ( Simon Mannering V the Titans TRY ) but the issue is they need more time together.....a lot of the time Johnson picks the right option but their collective timing is out ( both players....just need more time ).

Mcfadden needs to start focusing on getting more out of Johnson and Bukuya as a pair ......Johnons our best player......Bukuya is a great hole runner....sort it out.

The positives are a lot of our repeat sets come out of the nice understanding Bukuya and Johnson have with the in goal kicks, we see the odd try being scored there.....more importantly we see the opposition forced to ground the ball in goal because Johnson has put Bukuya down their necks chasing.

The other positive is that when the Warriors show more faith in Bukuya and make plays to put him in half gaps we have an extra move to fool the opposition into thinking it's going to go to Hurrell.

Boom too much strike power in close and out wide on both sides.......Warriors go top attacking team in the NRL.

Bukuya is not a hit up forward....he's an attack forward.....usually Gallen and Fifita hog all the ball till they use Bukuya like a back coz there backs are shit.

Hoffman coming means we don't need Matangi.

Matulino goes Prop......

Room is made for a very strong back row that has Hoffman who hits up like a fourth Prop.....our three best Props spend more time on the field ( they actually play better with longer minutes...the four prop has become a Myth.....those guys aren't the tear away run over the opposition young bucks they once were when Packer was good......they're all tradesmen Senior Props now....use it.....consistent quality minutes is better for us than an impact Prop like Matangi that may see our go forward lift or drop depending on the mood Matangi is in.....we drop off when the bench come on....I'd prefer grinding Props took all the minutes while Hurrell Laumape Manu and Hoffman eat meters and we look more like the Storm up front with a better back trio of monster backs and a better back row than theirs hopefully = we become a consistent team like them...few mistakes,,,,few brain farts.....experienced machine).

Bukuya Mannering Hoffman Seb.

Errrr the Chad was predominantly playing reserve grade last year. Given the step up his value has increased significantly on last year.

Agree, Chad made some nice appearances last year when the FG comp was weaker during origin and played well in a reserve grade team that feeds from two 1st grade teams (Cronulla/Storm). Plus his halves partner in reserve grade was Brett Finch. If he had stunk, there would have been huge questions asked of him. I think he has made some great strides here. I'm still not convinced he is more than a competent stop gap for us, but he is playing good footy and he is a likeable kind of player.

As for Bukuya, his first round defence against the Eels was poor and it has ebbed and flowed from there. Having watched him last year I was expecting more and believe he is the most underwhelming of our imports.

As for ST, I suspect the turnaround in form of this club has a lot to do with him. A large part of his value is what happens off the ball both in a game and behind the scenes.

Also Shaun Johnson has three new playmakers to learn from in Chad, ST and Cappy. We are seeing massive gains here.

Yep that's how I feel about Chads contribution too.

I totally agree.

When I say he isn't playing as well as he was last year it is entirely about the differences between Firsts and reserves.

He will get there to the level where he is as confident at putting in the boss performance with the boot he was at that lower level.

Don't get me wrong I think he is doing brilliantly.

Touche.

Wot I meant by some people need to look up the meaning of unforced errors in the dictionary is really to do with discussion on other forum boards more than here....

There is a sensible group of posters who rate Tomkins foibles as all to do with the difference between the ESL and the NRL.

While most of the issues relate to the differences.

un characteristic ....or unforced errors have nothing to do with the NRL.

Forced error implies pressure applied....these mistakes are NRL related.

Un forced literally means someone Fks up under no pressure....ergo it is an oxy moron to argue the force of the NRL causes unforced errors.

Same folk I was debating with insist Tomkins random cock ups are part of his go.

Random cock up players do not get called the best ESL player in a generation....I know lots don't rate the ESL at all.....but fark me on what planet do these ESL's best teams beat the NRL's best teams in the WCC then....?

The twilight zone ?

The reality we are seeing is a talented player struggling to adapt to a new team and a more intense comp.....

We are also seeing Tomkins go through a out of form patch ( the unforced error part ).

Bukuya and Tomkins are both in the same boat, IMO, neither are playing badly, im just looking for more..
We went years and years without a real strike 2nd rower and it looks like we buy 1 and den nek minit, we've not only had 1 but bloody 2 of dems and they are both better, who wouldve ever thunk it and now we are getting another 1..
Bukuya isn't really playing any different from last year, he is playing to our structure well tho, the real let down as defence said is his defensive lapses, bunnies game there were a couple of bad ones..
He has always played right side so doesnt have too many excuses for the lapses..Attack wise he is going fine, there's a lot happening out there positionally so you generally see him carting the ball up off of a cut..Checkout who is between the half and centre a lot..

The Brit teams can win those games because of a number of reasons like, the travel, they dont spend a week or so climatising after spending the summer in pre-season, the Storm last year had an unreal schedule around the wcc..
But mostly I believe they win because like any game of football, if ya play the very best you can,get a bit of bounce of the ball and a few lazy calls even the underdog has a chance..

One thing that hasn't been mentioned that may be affecting Bukuyu's and to a lesser extent, Townsend's form is getting used to the travel the Wariors do.

The Warriors roster is mainly former NYC players or long term pros used to it. I think it may take Jason and Chad a season to get used to it being Sydney blokes to achieve top form.

They did minimal travel in the Sharks and could easily handle the occasional trip. I think both have added value to the playing roster.

And Tomkins too, those northern league towns are generally within a decent bus ride of each other, London and Catalans excepted.

Townsend is meeting expecatations, probably exceeding them as no one really knew if he would be first choice 6, bukuya and tomkins will want bigger, better years next year, bukuya is on a 2 year deal right? So he might going for a new contract for 2016.

Agreed I don't think a lot of people factor in travel when they sign with us(cowboys and to an extent Melbourne too) and how much impact it can have. I used to be in a job that had me flying around the north island on most weeks and it takes a toll by the end of the week.
I do have a giggle when some of the Aussie teams complain about having to do "the long road trip to NZ" I'm not sure they register that we have to do it almost every second week.

187. JAYSON BUKUYA
Last update

Was released early after the 2014 to return back home on compassionate grounds. At the time of our last update he was signed back at the club we recruited him from the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. Just like Chad Townsend he would be part of the Sharks maiden Premiership winning team of 2016.

By 2019 he was playing a mix of 1st grade and reserve grade for the Newtown Jets including their 2019 Canterbury Cup NSW grand final victory over Wentworthville at the Western Sydney Stadium. The following week, Bukuya played for Newtown in the NRL State Championship victory over the Burleigh Bears at ANZ Stadium.

In 2020 Bukuya announced his immediate retirement from the game as detailed in the article below.

Cronulla Sharks' Jayson Bukuya retires immediately from rugby league

Cronulla Sharks forward Jayson Bukuya has announced his immediate retirement from rugby league.

Bukuya played 186 NRL games across stints at both the Sharks and the New Zealand Warriors.

The Daily Telegraph's David Riccio reported the news on 2GB's Continuous Call Team on Saturday.

"He has announced his immediate retirement from the game and he hasn't really been back involved with the Sharks since the COVID isolation break," Riccio said on 2GB.

"He took that opportunity, as we all did, to spend a lot of time with the family and realised that family has got to come first.

"He'll go down as a player's player.

"He was the one that always did the grunt work for the Sharks, he also represented his country."

The 31-year-old made his debut in 2008 for the Sharks off the bench against the Bulldogs.

He played two games that season but had to wait until 2011 to get another taste of first-grade action.

Bukuya also appeared 11 times for Fiji, including all four games at the 2008 World Cup.

Bukuya moved to the Warriors ahead of the 2014 season but only spent one year in New Zealand.

He returned to Cronulla in 2015 and was part of their drought-breaking Premiership team in 2016.

He last turned out for Cronulla's first-grade side in round 24 last year against the Canberra Raiders.

Bukuya was also a part of the Newtown Jets side that won both the State and National Championships in 2019.

Speaking to Cronulla Sharks media, Bukuya provided a simple explanation of why he decided to pull up stumps on his rugby league career.

"It was just time," Bukuya said.

Cronulla coach John Morris paid tribute to Bukuya's impact on the team and his dedication to the club.

"We wish Jayson all the best and congratulate him on a great career,” Morris told Sharks media.

“He will always be treasured at the Club for not only being a part of the 2016 Premiership winning team but also for the great person he was.

“He was an outstanding clubman who always gave his best both on and off the field."

Riccio said that Bukuya's retirement could see the Sharks chase another outside back after already bringing in Nene Macdonald to the squad this week.

"He [Bukuya] was on contract until the end of this year," Riccio said.

"What that will do is allow the Sharks to alleviate some salary cap pressure.

A month later he turned out for his local club Dubbo CYMS RLFC and thats we hear of him. He's very active on Twitter so I've messaged him and hopefully we get a reply...
