Temu grew up in New Zealand and played for the Marist Saints in the Auckland Rugby League. In 1994 he followed his coach, Stan Martin, to the Counties Manukau Heroes in the new Lion Red Cup competition. After several strong seasons with the Heroes he was offered a professional contract to play for Oldham in the English First Division. At Oldham Temu made an immediate impression, playing the first 22 consecutive games. Temu was to play for the club for the next three years.

In 1995, after a season with Oldham, Temu was selected by the Cook Island team to play in the Emerging Nations Tournament. The Cook Islands won the tournament.

In 1998 Temu made the move to the Hull Sharks and the Super League. Temu played 15 games for the club that year.

In 1999 Temu moved to Australia and joined the Newcastle Knights in the National Rugby League competition. His time at the club was plagued by injury and over two seasons he only played 3 first grade games. He was released at the end of 2000.

At the end of 2000 Temu was selected in the Cook Island team for the World Cup and was made vice-captain of the squad.

The Wigan Warriors were interested in signing Temu, who did not count as a quota player due to the time he had spent in Great Britain. However he was denied a work permit due to the little game time he had had at Newcastle and so the deal fell through.

Instead, Temu signed with the new New Zealand Warriors club and provided experience to the younger props in the side. When not selected by the first grade side he played for the Marist Richmond Brothers in the Bartercard Cup. He played four first grade games for the Warriors and subsequently decided to retire at the end of the 2001 season.

Tears to triumph: Elle Temu shines in Silver Ferns debut​

Elle Temu lined up for the national anthem, her new Silver Ferns teammates by her side, and let the emotions show as she sung in the black dress for the first time.

Temu's tears were a reminder that despite all the chaos in the build up to the first Test, it was still just that - a Test - and for the Stars defender in particular, a "debut to remember".

"It was a big step up and I'm just grateful to be here," Temu said.

"I thought I did quite well at the start of the anthem and then it kind of hit me all at once.

"But the girls got around me which was awesome."

Temu repaid that support in full with a stellar first night in the black dress, playing a full 60 minutes in the Silver Ferns' 70-45 win over the Sunshine Girls where she had three intercepts, five deflections and three gains.

The 22-year-old, daughter of former rugby league professional Jason, said she still had room to improve despite the impressive first-up performance.

"I didn't expect a 60-minute game but it was awesome to get that first cap under my belt," she said.

"And for it to be 60 minutes and just thrown in to see what it's like, it was awesome."

Temu will likely have a reduced role in tonight's rematch in Auckland following her full-game last night - whether that luxury can be afforded to Jamaica's seven players with their bench made up of former internationals and now-player/coach Connie Fraser remains to be seen.

Parramatta Eels star Isaiah Papali'i has opened up on his relationship with New Zealand netball international Elle Temu ahead of Sunday night's grand final.

Temu choked back tears while singing the New Zealand national anthem last week after winning her maiden cap for the Kiwis against Jamaica.

She has been in a relationship with Eels back-rower Papali'i for six years, but his move from the Warriors to Parramatta has resulted in a tricky situation for their love life.

Border restrictions enforced by Covid-19 mean the pair have spent very little time together over the last two-and-a-half years, with the 22-year-old Temu pursuing her own career with the Northern Stars in the ANZ Premiership in New Zealand.

But with the border with New Zealand softening over the last six months, Papali'i and Temu have been able to see each other more regularly - and she has even developed into a good luck omen for the Eels.

"I've been able to get to three games this year and they've won every time I've been to see him play," Temu told AAP.

"He put an Instagram post up last week and said I was his lucky charm."

Temu comes from a rugby league background, with grandfather Stan Martin coaching the Cook Islands and Kiwi Ferns and is now a prominent player agent.

Her father Jason Temu played for Newcastle, the Warriors and in the UK Super League.

"I'm not really critical or giving him feedback," she said.

"But I know when he's tired because I can see it in his body language."

Over the last few months, Temu has been in attendance for Parramatta wins over the Wests Tigers, Brisbane and last week's preliminary-final victory over North Queensland.

"I'm definitely getting her to the game," Papali'i told AAP about Temu attending Sunday night's grand final against the Panthers.

"She's got her own commitments, she's juggling that and then thinking 'how can I get to the game?'

"We've won every time she's been here, so fingers crossed she can hang around."

Papali'i and Temu started dating at school in Auckland six years ago, but their sporting commitments have meant they are barely in the same place at the same time.

When Temu finally got a move from Wellington to the Northern Stars in Auckland, Papali'i was locked down in Australia with his old club the Warriors at the start of the pandemic.

His subsequent move to Parramatta last season only exacerbated that.
"I only saw her once last year (because of Covid-19)," Papali'i said.

"I can feel the difference away from the field now and can look forward to things a bit more knowing we won't get stopped by Covid-19."

Regardless of whether Papali'i honours next year's contract with the Wests Tigers, Temu is likely to remain in New Zealand in a bid to become a regular international.

"There have been a lot of hard conversations over the phone," she said.

"I think it just shows that we really love each other to pursue our own stuff, but now we are both where we want to be - it makes it all worth it.

"When we are 50 or 60 and hopefully with a couple of kids, we're going to be grateful we did that."
