General Introduction Thread

I've followed RL since an early age as my father was involved in the game. I spent many years at Carlaw Park watching club games, Auckland's wins over international sides and the Kiwis too.
Hey Playdaball, just came over after an invite from Big Gee. I grew up going to all the Internationals and fox memorials at Carlaw. I have the original TVNZ video tape of the complete game when Auckland famously beat Aussie by 2 points in the dying minutes( thanks to ref Kesha awarding us a penalty). 1989. Was at the game and no one left the park, we just stood chanting 'Auckland' for about 10 minutes. If I can get it transferred to DVD I'll give you a copy. Still rates as one of the biggest David v Goliath games in league history , considering the Aussies went on to beat the kiwis that tour.

My name is Eva and I am 23 years old, currently studying towards a BA in History. I've been a Warriors fan since I was about 11, after my grandmother pulled us around the TV to see a relatives debut game for the Warriors. Since then, I've been hooked.

Welcome aboard, Eva!

The obvious question would be to ask who the relative was, but I'll make it a bit tougher for all of us by asking if it's one of the following players: Jason Bell, Ivan Cleary, Scott Coxon,
Henry Fa'afili, Shontayne Hape, Ben Lythe, David Mulhall, David Myles, Henry Perenara, Scott Pethybridge, Jonathan Smith, Matt Spence, Mark Tookey, Paul Whatuira...?

Thanks Jesbass!!

Lol well after posting in this thread last night, I tried thinking back to how old I was when I watched this game I refered to. I think my maths was a bit off. I wasn't 11. The game I meant actually happened in 2002, so I had just turned 13 then...so somewhere I lost 2 years of my life! :p just joking, more of a blonde moment PLUS tiredness from a long week working and studying. Sorry bout that. Lol. I won't say who the player is, but you might all guess, I'll just say that he no longer plays for the Warriors.

I was there too! I also remember watching Auckland beat GB and Aussie mid week around 1975 / 77. The Kiwis could never do it.

Son of an Aucklander and a Waikato farm girl, but born and raised for a majority of my life in Melbourne.
Lived in Auckland for 4 out of my 19 years, those being from 8 to 12.
Studying marketing in my first year out of High school.

Obviously a Warriors fan, but also an avid Union fan and AFL over here (kind of have to)
Generally make the trip back over the ditch once a year come the end of the season so hopefully will be over for a ate season game and fingers crossed for a final either over here or there.

Generally only see the two games live each week, but watch at the pub with a strong contingent of Warriors expats over here.

I'm a leaguie through & through. Played league for 14 years, grew up at Carlaw watching the great Auckland sides, also played on Carlaw. Too many good memories at Carlaw to state. Favourite player back in the days was Kelly Shelford. Related to former kiwi coach Bob Bailey & Kiwi great Roger Bailey. Been to one GF back in 93" Dragons v Broncos. welcome Brother

It's good to see a few familiar faces on here. I was born and raised in Sydney, Australia to loving parents who are both Warriors supporters. I play both football and rugby league. I'm in Year 11 at Cromer Campus. My interests are working out, sport, and hanging out. In my spare time, I love to draw, listen to music, and sleep. I don't smoke, drink, or do drugs. My body is my temple. That's me for you.

Yep I got the kings autograph on the field straight after. His signature was my prized possession.. Do you remember Great Briton v kiwis when Henderson Gill ran down the side line (twice) railway seats side, with all the kiwi defenders slipping off his vassed up legs? AAH the memories..
That's when GB were strong from what I recall.

Born and bred in Hastings aswell. My first memory is of my dad lifting me up into the air and all i could see was his 80s style Balmain Jersey. Tigers were my pre Warriors team and are my 2nd team these days still. (cant stand wests tho). League was always my first love altho I never really played it. Used to watch Dad turn out for the Flaxmere Falcons. I gave up on playing schoolboy rugby after being told i was too penalty prone due to my shoulder charge tackling style. I wish the school system was more supportive of Rugby League when i grew up. Played a bit of everything else instead but mainly cricket and basketball.

Moved to Tauranga in 7th form, over to Oz a couple years later, i remember finding a bar in regional South Australia and being the only person in the place watching the 2002 grandfinal. Moved back to Papamoa with my lovely (Australian) partner, who is also a huge warriors, kiwis and All blacks fan on account of never having taken any interest in either code till she met me, with AFL being the be all and end all in South Australia.

Finally moved up here to Auckland 5 years ago, Became a season member, BAY 27!! Met some awesome people through our love of the Warriors, Simone went into labour at a game. (July 12 2009 v bulldogs) and our daughter was born the following day. Now 2, she loves getting to go along to games these days. Definately in her blood and makes me proud hearing her scream out GO THE WARRIORS!!!

Still playing cricket, indoor and outdoor. Retired from the rest.

Work for Placemakers looking after timber orders etc

Favourite Warriors moment is also my least favourite. Goin over to oz to watch the grand final last year. Loved the experience, the buzz, having all eyes on our team, but the result as we know wasnt to be.

Another Invercargill Boy. Though I was born in Oamaru, I moved here within my first year of life.

I'm on the slippery slope to 40 (about 18 months to go). I'm a happily married father of 2 beautiful daughters, one turns 9 tomorrow and the other turns 5 next Wednesday. The youngest loves to point out anything Warriors related to Dad, the oldest loves to cheer on whoever is playing us, although neither really have an interest in watching the games yet.

Wasted my intelligence at school, and left as soon as I could. I never had an interest in playing sports. Was more into getting into trouble and playing video games when I was young. Used to watch the Winfield Cup and vaguely support Norths. It was the first time I really got to see league. It wasn't really a widely supported sport down here. I went to a Catholic High School who frowned on people playing, or watching league. It was rugby or cricket at Verdon College.

After leaving school I held a job at a brick factory for about 6 months while I saved to move to Rockhampton in Queensland. My father lives there with his wife and my half brothers. I moved over in 1991. Had a job as Dad's T/A for 6 months before being laid off. I enjoyed my freedom and the sunshine too much to get another fulltime job. I spent the next couple of years on the dole with the odd job here and there. I got pushed into training for long-term unemployed and did a course in Retail. Enjoyed the course immensely and far exceeded the course requirements. Thought I had discovered a passion. I didn't manage to find any worthwhile job after, so sat on the dole for a few more months. I started to realise that Rocky was too much of a hillbilly town for this boy from the big smoke, so I came home.

When I came home, I continued my career as a professional work evader for another year. Then I landed a job in a petrol station which managed (long winded story, so will brush past it) to get me a foot in the door at a local furniture and appliance branch of a fairly substantial company as a fulltime storeman and a parttime appliance salesman. I thought selling gadgets was something I would love. Turns out I was wrong. I quit the sales side after a couple of years and just did the job of storeman. Over the next few years the job grew from just me to several staff and a couple of delivery vehicles. I ended up running that side of it and built my reputation in the company. I began to hate the job over time and after 13 years my wife convinced me to take a risk and get the hell out. So I chucked it in with no backup plan. luckily I had a lot of holiday pay coming.

I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life now. I picked up a newspaper and started applying for any and every job to support my family. I got an interview as a forklift operator on the port in Bluff. Missed out on the job. They told me I was the very next one on the list (thats what they all say), but I wasn't buying it. They called me back and said one of the guys who got the job had changed his mind so it was mine if I had wanted it. I took the job eagerly, as I loved the idea of having no responsibility. That was just over 3 years ago and I still love the job. I think I'll be there for life. Made lots of friends and have taken up hobbies. Couldn't do it at the last job. I was so miserable that I couldn't get out of the rut and enjoy much. I've taken up golf (badly) with some workmates, and might even try playing a bit of touch, if I can get myself into shape.

I gave up smoking 2 years ago with the help of my workplace. Can't say it made me feel any better, but the money I am saving helps keep me in golf balls and Warriors merchandise. I managed to put on 15 kgs (a huge amount of weight for someone who has weighed 75-85kgs since high school). Work helped out again with access to a gym and a biggest loser competition to help me and many others drop a few pounds. I'm now sitting at about 90kgs but am carrying mostly muscle now. Me and a few workmates take a golf/piss trip every year on the anniversary of quitting smoking now.

Anyway, I have been a massive Warriors fan since inseption into the comp. People have to tell me to shut up sometimes, as it is virtually the only thing I talk about sometimes. Didn't have a lot of people to talk league with down here, so I joined VOT a couple of years ago to discuss all things Warriors. This year I have discovered Fox Sports Fantasy NRL. Have managed to get a few rugby mad friends (I can't stand the game, myself) into it as well, and now they only talk league, and talk it all the time. I am totally obsessive about anything Warriors. I have even built a humungus spreadsheet recording all NRL results since the original NSWRFL in 1908, as well as all Junior Warriors and Vulcans results. I have also made one for all International games. Its quite interesting following the results of some unusual countries. Its all colourful and gaudy looking (as I have no artistic talent and very little computer literacy), but it mine and I enjoy it. I quite like updating the team logos and colours each year. Its taken me about 8 years to build it up to what it is now. Maybe I should back it up one day.

I have been to a couple of Warriors pre-season games in Invercargill in the 90s. Have also attended a Tigers V Warriors game in Christchurch, as well as the "Grannygate game" between Great britain and the Kiwis in ChCh. I was really looking forward to my first ANZAC Test last year in Christchurch, but alas the city shook and stole my chances. I counted down the days until I could go this year, but was robbed again. I am considering getting to Auckland either this year or next to catch a home game, and I might try to coinside a Gold Coast holiday around a Titans or Broncos game next year.

Anyway, I think my computer is running out of ink and my fingers are starting to bleed, but thats me, lump it or like it.

Back from the NZWO dead. Good to see everyone again.

To write about myself, coz that's the cool thing to do in this thread: born and bred Aucklander, was at the Warriors first game in '95 when I was a wee chap, avid supporter ever since. Played rugby and cricket all through school and now a 4th year med student in Auckland hoping to graduate one day so I can stop being poor.
