General If New Zealand had its own equivalent of NRL what would it look like?

If we had our own NRL how would it look or how would you want it to look?

Say we had a 12 team comp. 500m tv rights deal. Top class players all over and we even imported aussies just for the sake of it.

Would you want it to be like the NRL with 8 clubs or so from the home of NZ rugby league in Auckland with your traditional clubs Mt Albert, Richmond e.t.c. and maybe 3 or 4 clubs from other regions in new zealand.

Or would you like to have it like NPC where one team for each region in New Zealand in the top 12?

The choice is yours, imagine how you would like to see it and for those who have a legit theory that will see your vision become reality, share and tell us how its gonna happen.

Same model as the Pirtek Cup or BarterCard Cup or the Lion Red Cup before that. Auckland split into 6 teams and 6 provincial teams such as Canterbury, Wellington, WaiCoa Bay, Central, etc...

If some millionaire decided to entirely cover the cost for each team, I’d like it to water down the Auckland component of it a bit, maybe 4 auckland (north, south, west, central) teams, 1 northland, 1 waikato, 1 bay, 1 central, 1 wellington, 1 christchurch, 1 south island miscellaneous

11 teams, play each other once, top four finals. Short and sharp comp, (like the old NPC was, before they ruined it) not dragged down by byes.
Obviously much of the player pool would be aucklanders having to move to the regions, but it’d grow the game a bit.

Definitely encourage a few imports per team to raise the standard, but don’t let them go overboard, want to develop the local player.

You wouldn’t want it going head to head with the NRL on Saturday nights in winter, maybe a spring/summer comp, might get a few marginal or QLD/NSW cup players interested.

Maybe steal a ranfurly shield or challenge cup gimmick and work that in there.

Would what we already have in NZ be the same level as Elite 1 in the uk? i think thats what they call the comp underneath superleague. would it be the same level in terms of standard of players, competition structure and salary. for anybody that might know. i have no clue.

Auckland Rugby League premier comp is on a down hill spiral with only 3 teams capable of winning the fox the rest are light years away.I think the problem is the Warriors sucking players away to the Vulcans and under 20s. The ones on the fringe who don't make the Warriors go to Aussie and most are never heard of again. None of the top 3 teams produce any players . So the short answer to your idea is not enough quality players in Auckland.

Unfortunately the talent isn't spread as evenly as union but would love to see a league version of the itm cup with the same teams.

interesting concept a parallel universe where the NRL was from NZ & we included one wacky australian outfit...

Back to another parallel reality we could have a semi pro even a modestly full pro comp in nz with top 4 auckland clubs sides with to much money for the fox and top 4 regional sides, warriors could even pull out of nsw cup and enter a side in the comp saving cash on 25 flights to oz every second week, the nrl would even cough up some cash out of the 20 million plus yearly profit they make out of nz in merchandise sales & tv rights to give us a grant of a million or so a year of our own money to fund the comp....

yeah how about the nrl could buy into it, get some type of small tv deal. the aussie clubs could loan some of their lower tier players to boost are teams. get an average wage of 60k goin i reckon it could build to something financially stable and viable for the further development of our players.

In this imaginary parallel dimension we have... an 8 team nationwide nzrl semi pro comp with $150,000 per side salary cap, 14 rounds + semi's and a final. Comp made up of top 4 club sides in auckland with budgets to big for the fox memorial & 4 biggest provincial/regional sides wellington, canterbury, waicoa, central (manawatu/taranaki) are all large enough areas to get sponsors or local government funding, good for the game to once again offer players in bigger regional centers a chance to be semi professional. NZRL could get a modest tv rights deal, naming rights sponsor to cover costs and finally grow a nut and ask the NRL for a yearly development grant from the millions in profit the NRL make & take out of NZ each year in NRL merchandise and tv rights money made from hardworking kiwi's who buy NRL gears and pay sky subscribtions etc.
We need a national semi pro comp asap with under 20's rumored to be on the scrap heap soon, comp could also provide a rep game mid season auckland vs rest of the country, while im at it this format would allow us to bring back the end of season national club knockout comp, thats all bases covered.... now back to reality there goes gravity
