General Halves Discussion (this Year And Beyond)

Since maloney is leaving next year how would everyone feel about going after jacob miller who is off contract end of the year? Or even matt mcgahan from the storm. I think both have the potential to be good halfs in the future, and we could build a dynasty with one of them plus johnson and locke.

Or even aidan sezer.

As good as it sounds, teams just cant afford to hold onto two world class halves long enough to build a dynasty, they are worth too much on the open market...you may
get to have a combo for a few seasons while one or both are still young or starting out, but if they are both considered top tier halves, you wont have em both for
long, not without compromising the strength of your squad.

Aiden has locked his spot at the titans i doubt he will leave

havent seen much of mcgahan but from what others tell me hes good

Potential replacements IMO and preference.

Locke
Leuluai
Godinet
Tuimavave
Meads
Mateo???
Jerome???????
I'd be really keen on seeing Locke given a run in the halves, but Fish just hasn't shown enough in first grade to convince me he'd be a fit replacement at fullback.
Leuluai is the only logical first choice number 6 for next season, and we wouldn't need to weaken our number 1 spot to accommodate him.
Although, TL has never actually played 6 - he's always been a 7. Maybe Johnson will be 6 instead, with TL at halfback? Although the roles don't seem to be immensely different these days.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Johnson at 6. Given how much he loves taking the line on, you'd think he'd benefit from being 2nd receiver and starting his runs a bit deeper a la Marshall. He can just as easily slot into 1st receiver on the last if a bomb is going to be the option. But yeah, it really depends on the style the team is going to play. JT has hardly been less effective for the Cowboys/QLD since moving to 6.

I really like the look of miller, under 20s half back of the year last year, has a good organising game and a good kicking game. From everything the fans are saying on the tigers forum they really dont want to lose him and some are calling him the future of the club, but he is almost certanly leaving the tigers. I think he deserves a chance in first grade and I really dont think TL will be a good fit in the halves with johnson

Your not wrong, and then Teams Like Manly pay reputedly Six hundred K a piece to Defy the Economics of the Salary Cap.

So after a one point two Mill spend up whats Matai , Lyon , Watmough , Kite etc playing for ...Food Stamps ?

why are people so keen to see locke in the halves? would rather have him at the back

agree 100%...theres no real reason to move him, we see the good fullbacks doing a lot of their teams playmaking these days, not to mention active
kicking games etc. The only thing that would really change moving locke to 5/8 would be, having him, a little guy, getting smashed by forwards running
at him all game, and losing the best fullback at the club by a long long way... hardly a worthwhile move, when he could do everything Maloney is
doing now attack wise (and probably better) from his position at the back.

why bring another half when we have the depth in that position a people forgetting about godinet and Tuimavave who will be our backup next season. plus mcgahans dirty on the warriors because he never made there toyota cup team

I may be wrong here, but I'm pretty sure the Warriors didn't turn him down. I remember going to the open trials at year, and Matt wasn't there - I'm pretty sure he signed with the Storm halfway through his final year at MAGS. In fact, now that I think about it - I remember the Warriors management offering a trial to every single player in that that 2009 1st XV backline, so I think he turned down the Warriors if anything.

On the Locke / Lockyer thing.....Lockyers evolution to Half was pretty unique as far as how successful it was.

Wayne Bennet is a visionary and ahead of his time, Lockyer had the mental aptitude of a great player, a ridiculously talented team around him with a culture of success.
Lockyer didn't go so well to begin with, Bennet was very patient, arguably he could afford to be.

The Idea on paper of Locke being the next Locky is appealing...a caution would be that the same conditions don't exist at the Warriors
