Former All Black (7 Tests) was an ace goal-kicking winger/fullback during Wigan’s championship reign in the early 1990s. Botica returned to NZ with Wigan coach John Monie in 1995 for the Warriors’ debut season but left only one season and saw out his professional career with Castleford in 1996-97.

When I first moved to Auckland in 1999 I used to see Frano Botica quite often around the Takapuna area. This was quite soon after he had finished playing union in the UK. He had some calves on him back then compared to before he left New Zealand to play league and union in England.

Since then I've seen his real estate branded vehicle a bit.

A former New Zealand All Black, Frano Botica moved to rugby league joining Wigan in 1990.

He made his debut as a winger in the Charity Shield at Swansea City FC. Botica had an outstanding points scoring record and reached 1000 points in only his 93rd game, becoming the fastest British based player to reach the milestone.

During the 1992-93 season, he broke two Club records as he kicked 184 goals and amassed 423 points over a single campaign. He would go on to break his own goal-kicking record in 1994-95 when he kicked 186 goals, a record that still stands to this day.

Botica also created a Premiership record when he kicked ten goals in the 1992 final, a record he equalled three years later. He returned to New Zealand in 1995 to play for Auckland Warriors but a broken leg cut short his time there.

Botica returned to England to play for Castleford during the first year of Super League, where he scored his 2000th career points. After one season with the Tigers he returned to rugby union playing for Orrell and Llanelli before retiring.

Frano is still working in real estate but has left Harcourts Mairangi Bay and is working for UP in Herne Bay, Auckland.

He was a one man team for North Harbour as they were forced to play through two lower divisions to get into the old NPC. He was a loyal Takapuna boy who turned down the chance to play for the mighty Auckland. His father Nick was a genuine stalwart of North Harbour rugby.

IMO he took that loyalty to the Warriors. He always put in. A really brilliant player.

I think his fortunes dropped off and he may have even gone bankrupt. Life can be tough.
