Internationals Fien eligible to play for Kiwis YES!!!!!

Nathan Fien has become the latest Australian to make himself available for the Kiwis.

The 26-year-old Warriors hooker, who played one State of Origin game for Queensland in 2001, has a Kiwi grandmother and is eligible to play in this year's Tri Nations.

The news will be welcome for Kiwis coach Brian McClennan, especially as Fien is comfortable at hooker, halfback or five-eighths, positions where the Kiwis lack depth.

The former North Queensland Cowboy also offers a kicking game.

Having spent the past 18 months in New Zealand with the Warriors, Fien says he has a better understanding of his Kiwi roots and what it means to wear the black and white jersey. It was sometimes hard to escape, however, especially when the New Zealand players at the Warriors returned after last year's Tri Nations.

"Living and growing up in North Queensland, I never considered playing for New Zealand but I have been over here nearly two years now and the feeling we have at the Warriors has really opened my eyes," Fien said.

"The boys came back from winning the Tri Nations and all the stories they told made me realise I would love to be a part of that."

Fien, who was born in the central Queensland mining town of Mt Isa, spoke to a number of people before making the big decision to turn his back on his country of birth and the chance to play Origin football again. Among others, he sought the advice of Cairns-born Warriors and Kiwis fullback Brent Webb, who made himself available for New Zealand after gaining residency, and Kiwis captain Ruben Wiki.

"It's always been there in the back of my mind," Fien said. "I spoke to Ruben about what it means to play for the Kiwis and it's something I relate to coming from Queensland, always being the underdog. And I had a good talk to Webby because he went through the same thing a couple of years ago.

"I just missed out on [playing] State of Origin this year but this is my choice and I won't be turning back. I am 100 per cent committed to it. Hopefully my form is good enough to catch the eye of the selectors.

"Every player wants to play at the highest level and I'm no different. It will be an unreal experience if it comes off and it's something I will grab with both hands."

* Former Warriors wing Misi Taulapapa has signed with the Sharks for next season.

The Warriors axed Taulapapa last month for a series of alcohol-related offences but he was soon picked up by Queensland Cup side the Central Comets.

Great news, we've lacked depth in the halves and at hooker for a while now, and Fien will be a great addition.

im sorry but the only position fieny can cover is hooker. maybe five-eighth if he takes ony 2 kicks a game.

Nice of Nathan there. Good stuff for him. I didn't know his grandmother was a kiwi!

But, from the way I'm reading that SOO selectors better start being careful. If players like Fien start reckoning on playing internationll footy (which ever side they pick) rather than SOO, then SOO could begin to lose it's appeal. I already started to feel that in this year's series. Same players every year...was starting to get a bit boring

He can cover the halves as well, he just needs time to get adjusted there. With Benji gone I'm hoping for a Jones/Fien combination.

his best position is hooker. he was quite shocking for the warriors in the halves. kicks on a full, poor 5th options, too predictable, kicks in goals always going dead. dont believe me watch some highlights of this seasons games.

I will be gutted if we pick Fien - he's played origin, he's an aussie.
Please Bluey, don't destroy the credibility of international football by picking an aussie everytime we're a bit short on depth - develop a young NZer, don't pick an Ocker.

What does that make Webby then? An idiot too?

Swain, Cayless Bros, Webb, Webster, Pritchard all Australian born and raised players to have worn the Kiwi jersey over the past few years.

did he not carry the cowboys to the finals from 7.

fien can cover 7 just fine but is proabbly more suited to hooker now having played a number of games there

the cowboys carried fien. they had an awesome forward pack which allowed little guys like matty bowen and nathan fien scoot out of dummyhalf and do their thing.

Well, you're both right, lol. The backs need the forwards to perform so that they have enough space, but they in turn need to perform as well. It takes two to tango...and to play league, too!

If i say it would be right for him to play for us i would be a hypocrite, especially after all the kiwis playing for Queensland.

Well with Thorne, Carroll, Hunt playing for Queensland + Australia. I And me not liking that. I would be a hypocrite to say its ok for Fien to play for us. Sure he has a Kiwi grandmother, but he has already played for Queensland.

You're forgetting about the fact aht Throne played internatiional rugby for the AB's a few years ago. Different sport yes but he crossed the border line too! And where was his link inregards to playing for the AB's? Caroll is something different entirely, he's only ever thought of himelf as all out australian same with Hunt the smunt!

Yes, and i hate them all for it. I'm not saying what they are doing is right. I'm disagreeing with it!!!

Therefore i cannot say its all fine and dandy for Fien to play for us. Sure if he hadnt had the 1 origin cap then fine. But he does.

The way I see it that's part of the past and this decision is more about the future. Obviously I can't prove this but really if he's all for playing for nz and has every show for it then I'd give the green light to that. as I said sometimes pride doesn't come from your past or even from the outside it's what's on the inside that counts.

I'm not doubting he has pride, cause he does. But that 1 origin cap. It just gives the Aussies more to whinge about Tri Nations time.

Well who gives a **** about what the Aussies say. They can take their whinging and find some one else who wants to listen.
