General Fatal Shark Attack At Muriwai

Whats the point of killing the shark I wonder.
Fear that it may have attacked again, I'm guessing.

That said, they still don't know whether the swimmer was killed by the shark or if he/she had dies in the water and the shark attacked the remains.

Holy sheeyit, my hometown. Haven't heard of a serious shark attack there before, just loads of drownings and blowhole incidents.
OT but man I miss my beach. Wellington ones are pitiful.

Poor family that's pretty awful.

Been 'Bumped ' by a shark off Tokomaru bay twenty years ago....got grazed up one side. Own Fault , swimming a Kontiki past the last breaker at sun set dun dun dun dun dumb dumb

Can understand the Cops shooting the Animal , shark attacks off the mainland are incredibly rare.....especially the North Island.....I'm guessing the Cops were worried it might go rogue....( displaying abnormal behavior versus a case of mistaken identity )

There's a lot of White sharks off the west coast aye....there was a big female off the Manukau nick named Bessie in the nineties.....trashed a few fishing lines....

I guess the other possibility is a Mako.....the only Maori word used around the planet aye ( we'll know for sure when they identify the shark aye )......the spooky thing about that witness account is how the attack sparked a frenzy....can't shoot em all....

Those mad fullahs that go paua diving off the Chathams could spin a good camp fire side yarn or two

All due respect and condolences to the deceased and their family, but wtf is up with shooting the shark? The fkn thing lives in the water and hunts mammals! How about rounding them up and guiding them off-shore and try to prevent it happening again!

Pretty sure the shark would have been toast if it was innocently sitting in a car in bumper to bumper traffic, but otherwise, nah.

Sad for guys family...but a cop going out on the water and shooting at the shark is utter rubbish..the shark or sharks was just doing what it does by nature in its natural environment

Didn't they shoot at the shark initially to be able to retreive the body? The family would probably want to have something left to bury.

Did they go out later and shoot at it again? That would be stupid unless sharks get a taste for swimmers or something.

So, reading BiggerD's other thread article.....the Police had to shoot at the Sharks to retrieve the fellah.

On the shooting at / trying to kill sharks thing......while It's the sharks home and they don't know any different ....... If your Boss was to tell you that a two tonne killing machine with prior from.....was going to hang out in your office it might raise health and safety issues for a life guard too......ok I know that's and over simplification.....there are Sharks in the Sea anyway.....but a known man eater is a bigger risk ?
