General English Premier League

I lived in London in the 80’s. Went to Wembley a few times and compare and contrast:
1983 England v Denmark, we lost and my then Danish lady friend and I watched morons in the tube afterwards singing that song and looking around the carriage for any dissenters
1985 Hull v Wigan RL final. Tube train pulls in to go to the game and you could already hear the Wiganers singing a very funny but uncomplimentary song about Alex Murphy’s alleged sexual preferences, featuring the line ‘Alex takes it up the rear’ My lady friend was killing herself laughing

A different atmosphere
Absolutely, the league crowd are very different.

One of my great culture shocks in UK was going to an EPL match and having to designate who I supported (was a neutral) and seeing the lengths they went to to keep the fans seperate. well that and having to drink your beer on the concourse and not in your seat lol

Hooliganism started in the 60’s and peaked in the 70’s and 80’s. People laugh at Millwall and the like but the yobbos causing trouble were and still are a stain on society. It’s much safer now but still there is bother in some places

Who did you go and watch out of curiosity ?

It was Fulham v West Ham late 2000s

England beatDenmark 2-1 and are in the final v Italy. First final since 1966
Got up early for a change, was well worth it.

I do not profess to be an expert on football or even semi poorly informed, although I along with many millions of NZ kids played it at junior level during the league off season.

I thought Denmark had the upper hand for a lot of that match, their formation was better set than England, they seemed to have much better control of territory in England’s half, I was really worried there, England seemed to struggle when playing down Denmark’s end.

What did you think of the Officiating mate? seemed favourable toward England in the second half.

Glad I got up early, right result.

It's coming home.

Denmark ran out of steam after about 70 minutes and England’s bench is far stronger. Thought we dominated from then and possibly could have had another goal very late on when Denmark were knackered. Lucky penalty but we should have had one earlier that wasn’t given when Kane was tripped.
Whilst I’m more into RL and athletics (my old sport in younger days) I”ll watch the big football games no problem

The missus is getting into this football lark, Sweet Caroline is blaring out downstairs and I’ve got instructions to drape this at the front of the house. Gone full on chav.

We blew it. An early goal and we had them on the rack for the first 30 mins. Never have a better chance tbh, playing at home

Fucked penalty order tbf. Kane shouldn't have taken the first and no way should Saka have been given the 5th.

They obviously practice these things in training but you can’t replicate the nerves you must feel when taking one for real. Hope the lad comes back stronger, really felt for him. Only just left school

I feel very sorry for Hardyman's Yugo...a Warriors and England football fan :( …are you looking for counselling...or are you used to it by now?

My verdict...as usual the English didn't really want it...they never do.

What do you want here Mayo?

I want to fly jets.

My grandmother wants to fly jets!!!!

The pain of this one is it was there for the taking. I’m reluctant to criticise the manager who has transformed the team in the last 4 years, but when Italy were attacking we were crying out for a player to hold onto the ball to help Kane. That player is Grealish but instead he brought Saka on who was poor and the wrong choice anyhow

So you disagree with me? I was being honest, they didn't really want it.

I don’t know if it came down to desire. A mistake by the manager didn’t help. Fine margins and all that

We aren’t good at penalty shot outs mind.

A dud goal in 1966, ok they were robbed by the hand of god in Mexico but their performance in big games is terrible.

I was watching at 1 - 0 and as the half went on it was clear the Italians were building, the English wanted the game to end then.
