General Dragons Tail Draft - Game Thread - Begins Dec 26th

Sorry, I’m abit dumb.

What is the objective of the game ? You draft a team of rugby current and ex-rugby league greats to form a team using cunning ideas on a criteria for each round. What happens after you have your team?

Not quite. Wizards took a bit of poetic license.
Once everyone has their 17 dudes and made a team list I will post a voting thread where I will list all the teams. All of us will then vote on who we think is the best team to determine a winner and second and third places. You may not vote for your own team.
Other guys from the forum are invited to vote as well.
The reigning champ is bring me the horizon from our last contest who I think is BillySpeen user name change now?
I forget who won the other drafts but they were an absolute blast where we were addicted to our phones and this site for about two weeks.

I am looking forward to this draft
It is an adaptation of other draft ideas I have researched or been involved with.
If it lives up to my expectations then I am expecting advanced cunning not seen since an episodes of Blackadder goes forth!!
I am really interested to see what machinations play out and whose personality this game suits.
Before the game starts i also need to issue an edict where I ask all the competitors to keep their cool and code of conduct / gentlemanly behaviour up even if they get bushwhacked as the name of the game is to sting your competitors. So all will be reminded in the rules to roll with the good times and the skullduggery times.
Should be epic !!!

Hi All

Proposed rules – this will be a “wall of rules” to cover every eventuality. I may add to these in the next few days.

The DRAFT will begin on Dec 26th – all timings will be New Zealand Standard time.

Preliminary Rules
1) 9 contestants.
2) 17 rounds. Draft 13 players and 4 reserves and make a well rounded Rugby league team. In the 18th Round Draft a Head Coach (Head Coach must be a former player who meets the eligibility rules)
3) Eligible players must have played at least one test match since Jan 1 1980 for Australia or New Zealand.
4) The 9 contestants will be randomised into reverse snake order and take turns to lead rounds for rounds 1 to round 1 to 18.
5) This game is called Dragon's tail and requires great strategising and cunning. Each person who leads the round will be known as the "Round Master" Each round master will think of a clever drafting criteria "The players in this round must have a first name starting with W" and then they make sure the take Wally Lewis with their first pick leaving the guys who go last in the round at the Dragon's tail to scrap over weaker players if there aren't many good league players with first names W. It will be a requirement that you research your question to make sure there are at least ten choices. That is basically the game. Be aware of and make a short list of your main competition who you want to beat. And customise your question to disadvantage your main competitor. The rest of the strategies I will let you figure out for yourself.
6) Code of Conduct. Keep your cool. If someone snakes you remember it is a game that incentivises snaking other people.
7) Infringements are yellow card first offence. Red card and elimination for second offence. Infringements can include breaking the rules and also not making your draft pick in the allotted time.
8) You have 12 hours to make each pick. Hardyman’s Yugo will be allowed 18 hours since he is in a different time zone. When it your turn to be round master and lead a round you will also have 12 hours to post your pick and name your “question/draft conditions”
9) No person may draft a player already drafted at any point in the game
10) A RoundMaster’s question may be challenged as illegitimate if the challenger believes there are not 10 eligible players who meet the criteria.
11) No Collusion. No personal messages at all to each other. All communications must be in the game thread. You may personally message Wrighty with a question or concern however. In two or three or more members deemed to be working together as a team will be eliminated.
12) Wrighty is the game administrator and moderator. His decisions are final and may override previously stated rules if he deems so. Also reserve the right to add new rules during the game.


Feedback on those rules? In particular Should we draft a coach in Round 18 or an 18th man reserve player.

So how does each round work for order of picks (beyond the first person that sets the rule up & picks first)?

The Roundmaster goes first and the second person is the person BENEATH him on the list and then next is the guy beneath that guy and then up to the top of the list

That doesn’t really make sense - we’ll not to me it doesn’t, perhaps because I’m the most disadvantaged by the order. I think you need to be mixing up the order, so person that picks last in Rd 1 goes 1st in round 2, etc, or alternatively if you keep the order of 1st picks the same then the player that picks 9th in round 1 picks 2nd in round 2, so apply reverse snake draft to every pick from 2-9 for each round (or something similar). Everyone will obviously target the best players early on, so that’s why you need to mix it up

I will adopt your way and post a revised drafting order tonight !!!
Will use randomised reverse snake and re randomise after every second round
I don’t know if that makes any sense written down but you will see my proposal later tonight

This might not make any sense but if you can decipher the below then you can let me know your thoughts in advance

Choice a)
Round masters in the order posted earlier
Round 1 next 8 guys are randomised

Round two
Next round master goes first as scheduled
Next 8 guys are the reverse snake of round 1 with the round one round master slipping into the spot where the round two round master would have been

Choice b)
Round masters as posted per round
Round 1 round master goes first next 8 guys randomised
Round 2 round master goes first next 8 guys randomised
And so on to round 10
Round 10 onwards scheduled round master goes first
Next 8 guys are in the reverse snake order of the last time that round master led a round
 
I like choice A even though it is harder to understand as there is less randomising which could lead to one guy getting a very unlucky draw throughout the draft
